| road/trail run 1:06:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Montrail | ||
| I decided to run from my house over to Hammond Pond, where there is an o map. It's only about a 15 minute run. The air today seemed slightly warmer than yesterday, so I wore the same outfit, but with gloves. I really should have worn another long sleeve shirt, and I was quite cold most of the time, but especially in the beginning. I decided to run hard to warm up, but then I overdid it and began to sweat a bit. Therefore when I slowed down my arms got cold again because they were sweaty! I was really not enjoying the run over on the road, but then had a good time running around on the trails. I think that I am truly a trail runner/ orienteer who occassionally likes track workouts. But roads are boring and difficult to run on alone. | ||

| My quads were sore a long time from my last try at plyometrics. I'm taking it more slowly this time. | ||
Thursday Feb 28 | ||
| road run 50:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Dad and I ran over to Westfield street for the usual Thursday workout. It was colder than it looked, and my hands were cold the whole time, except when I was runing the intervals. Next time, I need to wear gloves. | ||
| road run 21:30 [4] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Three times up Westfield street. On the first one I felt cold and didn't think I was going very fast. Times were 7:08, 7:13 and 7:11. HR was rather low today, although it could be the HR monitor because it does read funny sometimes. Maybe it was the altitude training in Tucson :) Besides my hands freezing, it felt good to run fast. | ||

| trail run 1:49:12 [1] | ||
| shoes: Montrail | ||
| A long run with Dad on the trails in the Blue Hills. The snow was softer than we thought so there was a fair amount of slipping around. I entertained us both by giving a detailed account of the weekend which almost took the whole run. It began to rain near the end, and I was glad that I have a half day on Tuesday so we got out before it really started. | ||

| Orienteering 32:45 [5] 4.81 km (6:49 / km) +175m 5:46 / km | ||

| A shorter course with more climb than yesterday. I found the navigation to be easier, and I didn't make any of the small mistakes like yesterday. I think I could have chosen a better route to #2 (I took te trail, which caused me to up and down through the reentrant), and I was a bit confused on #6 when I hit what I thought was the end of the dirt road, but in fact the road extended longer in reality than on the map. After much thought I think my route to 9 was the best for me. I decided not to drop down to the trail and run the flat because I was worried I wouldn't know where to cut up the hill to the control. Instead I climbed up to the fence and then ran along the fence to the top of the hill and used that as an obvious attackpont. I think the trail route may have been faster, but I took the safer route with big features and obvious attackpoint. And I know that some people did overrun the control by taking the trail. I tried to push harder today, especially on the flat to 7 and 8, and really tried to push the pace at the end of the race. Could still feel the 5,000 feet though! | ||

| Orienteering 25:00 [1] | ||

| We arrived early at the meet site, so I had a chance to go run on the training map. It was a good warm up and I was glad to see how they were mapping the trees. | ||

| My first green course in many years :) I am running Varsity so that I can qualify for World University Champs this summer in Estonia. I was quite nervous before I headed out, but #1 was pretty straight forward. The course went well for me, no errors over a minute. I lost a bit over 30 seconds on #7 by running into the wrong reentrant, but I was aware that I was probably going to. And #6 came up sooner than I expected so I had to stop to figure it out for a moment. Otherwise I think I made some not so great route choices to some controls - like 5 and 10. Much to improve on, but nice to have a more or less clean race! | ||
| trail run 10:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw | ||
| warm up before the sprint. They were running a bit ahead of schedule, so I was running strides on the road when I heard my name. I was well warmed up when I started! | ||
| Orienteering 19:43 [5] 2.9 km (6:48 / km) +90m 5:53 / km | ||
| shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw | ||
| Sprint course in the afternoon. I didn't have a clean race like this morning. I stopped in confusion on the way to 3 and 4, but managed to find 3 with some scanning of the grasses. On 4 I stopped on a spur which it was on, but that was more luck than anything else. The vegetation didn't seem to match up at all and I couldn't figure out what I had done. I think that when they blew the 1:15000 map up to 1:5000 the vegetation was stretched out, or something, because it didn't seem to match up quite as well as it did this morning. I figured out where I was by seeing others run by which forced me to turn my head 90 degrees and then the terrain made sense. After 4 I was pretty clean. Quite tired though, especially with all the ups and downs the course made you do. | ||

| shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw | ||
| A compass practice course on a very flat map. I had a bit of trouble going to #1, but I found it. And then I was really lost on #2. There were only white streamers out, so seeing the streamer was difficult unless you knew you were in the right spot. I think I ran right by it a couple of times. Eventually, after trying to relocate off the ditches and the golf course, Tom ran by and I flagged him down for help :) I was very close to the control, and I would have bumped into it if there was a flag, but I really had no idea. The rest of the course was ok up to 8, where I ran very far from the control before relocating. Cristina assured me no spiky things, but I pulled something very long out of my ankle part of the way through and my ankle is still sore. Super fun and interesting map! | ||

| Plyometrics led by Tom. | ||
| Orienteering 1:05:00 [2] 7.5 km (8:40 / km) | ||
| shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw | ||
| Contour only course. But there wasn't much out there except contours. I thought about cutting it short, but I was making good time so I did the whole course. That was a good idea, except the terrain from 8-9 was quite crappy. My legs were bleeding and now have many holes in them. Navigation went well. I missed 1 by stopping too short, and was a bit off on 3 by going out the wrong nose, but both were resolved without too much standing around or confusion. Moving at a good pace, but trying to hold back a bit knowing that I would be running again this afternoon. | ||
| lifting/strength (strength intervals) 11:46 [2] | ||
| shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw | ||
| Tom's idea of a fun way to begin the afternoon training. Strength intervals, which remind me of college track, which is when I last did these. We had 6 exercises, including burpies, and between each one we had to run an interval to the bend in the road and back. I decided in the beginning that sprinting full out on the intervals was probably not a good idea considering I didn't know how I would be feeling at the end. Strength felt ok, but my stomach was a bit unhappy. Cristina and I stopped for water on the way to training this morning and picked up a bag of gummy worms and peach rings. We pretty much finished off both bags between trainings and we are blaming them for the unhappy stomachs during the afternoon. | ||
| Orienteering 39:17 [3] 4.5 km (8:44 / km) | ||
| shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw | ||
| The afternoon orienteering activity. A middle course simulating relay conditions. The idea is one person goes out, I assume to be chased down by others, then other go out in small groups, and then a final person goes out. I went out first, to be chased down. I think mentally I handled it rather well. I took a safe route to #1, and although I was a bit off in the beginning because the trail went further than shown on the map, I found it without problem. I also found #2 without a problem, but was standing on the top of the cliff for a bit doubting myself before I went to the bottom of the cliff where I finally saw the control. I need to remember to go all the way to the feature! Then if it's not there I can begin to doubt. Everything else went well up to #9. I ran down the wrong spur and hit a stream junction with rock that looked just like the one I was looking for. I followed the stream up but the control feature was not there. I realized I made a mistake, thought back, and knew that I had not gone far enough. Checking the map I could easily see the parallel error that I made and quickly corrected. Although I didn't spend much time relocating, I added on extra distance and this is where Eric, who started last, caught and passed me. I saw him going to 10, but then he disappeared and I wasn't even sure he went to it (he did) and then I could see him ahead of me going to 13, but he was much to far away to catch. I was moving faster than this morning because I knew that people were running behind me, but I made sure I didn't get carried away before this weekend. Also, running fast made me feel more nauseous, which was a good motivator to stay at a reasonable pace. | ||

| xc skiing (skate) 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| The trails iced over today and the skiing was again not ideal. Hill and I tried to skate, but we left ruts on the trails where we skated yesterday so it was bumpy. Ok for the most part, but the downhills were deadly. No snow to snow plow, and then the ruts caught your skis. I only went out of control once and crashed into the snow bank on the side, which was better than landing on the icy trail. Unfortunately, my fist went through the snow bank first and punching through the snow gave me bloody knuckles. | ||
Monday Feb 18 | ||
| xc skiing (skate/classic) 1:20:00 [3] | ||
| Skate skiing at Beaver Brook Farm with Hill. It really warmed up today and the snow was really soft, which made it difficult to skate. I really only skated the downills, and was classic skiing (with my skate skis) on the uphills and flats. Give you an idea of how sticky the snow was! Very slow going. I was surprised that I was not sore today - neither arms nor legs! | ||
Sunday Feb 17 | ||
| xc skiing (skate) 3:00:00 [3] | ||
| We went up to Craftsbury and skated around there. Hill, Ross, Dad and I started out on the Grand Tour, but were making good time and so decided on add on the extension. It was a beautiful day for skiing and my skate skiing has improved since yesterday. Near the end I was doing a lot of modified skating - I'm sure there's a term for it. Where instead of pusing off with both poles at the same time, I push with one pole with each 'step'. It's what I usually do to get up steeper hills, but near the end of the three hours I was doing it on any slight uphill. | ||

| xc skiing (skate) 2:00:00 [3] | ||
| We stopped at Northfield Mountain to do some skiing on the way to Vermont. We started skate skiing and I didn't think I was going to make it. The trails were icy and I was having a hard time. I improved as time went on. A lot of uphill climbing, since the trails are all basically on the side of a hill. You are either going up or down. The downs were quite impressive. The icy conditions made the downhills very thrilling. Ross and I were both wishing we had more edge to our skis. A lot of skating uphill today. | ||

| road run 22:00 [4] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Ran up Westfield Street hill 3 times. The plan was to only do 2, and run the second half of the second one as hard as I could, while running the rest of it at threshold. But then on the way back down the hill after the first one, dad (and I) decided that I really should be doing more. So we tacked on another one. Splits: 7:14, 7:16 and 7:10. I was running around HR 182 for most of it, but then ran the second half of the last one faster, and HR was around 187. Feels good to run fast.
Then I came home and Ross made me the largest and best Valentine's dinner ever. And I am never eating again. I also got a second DDR pad so we can have real competitions :) | ||

| Today dad and I went orienteering!! It's been awhile. We ran around a ski-o course on the ponkapog golf course, because it''s the closest thing we have to Arizona terrain up here! We also did a few controls in the woods around it. Fun to be out orienteering again! I taped my arch as recommended (thanks Zan!) and it felt great while running my my Inov8s. I was worried it would bother my foot, since they were the shoes I was wearing when it all got worse, but it wasn't a problem. | ||

| road run 1:50:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| A long run with Hill, Dad, and Ross. We put off the run until later than planned because people were busy. I was tempted not to go out because it was raining on and off and it looked rather unpleasant. But the sun poked out a few times, and I really didn't want to put it off. Right before we headed out a blizzard kicked up and large flakes were falling from the sky. Thunder crashed and the wind picked up. I put on gloves and a hat and almost an extra shirt (dad made me leave it at home) in preparation for our winter run. About 10 minutes into the run the sun was shining and I took off my hat and gloves for the rest of the run. We had sun most of the way and it was a good Newton street-o. Then about 2 minutes after we got back to the house the sky grew dark, the wind picked up, and another mini snow blizzard! The weather has been insane today, but we managed to run during the nicest hour and 50 minutes of it! | ||
Saturday Feb 9 | ||
| xc skiing 40:00 [2] | ||
| Ross and I were picked up by mom and dad this morning and we went to the Weston Ski Track. Hill was already there with her crew team, so it was a family outing :) We brought skate skis, since they have groomed trails open - although only about 1.5km were groomed. Skating was really painful for the first 5-10 minutes. My shins were killing me, as I was using my toes to lift my skis. It felt like lactic acid was building up in my shins. I would skate for as long as I could, stop so the feeling went away (about 10 seconds) and then continue skating. Luckily this feeling did go away and I was able to enjoy myself. We were tere over an hour, but there was a lot of stopping due to shins and chatting. THen the family came over to my house for a game of Killer Bunnies :) | ||

| Running with Hill around Dedham. We actually went around the Wilson Mountain trail loop which I quite enjoyed as I have not been running on trails enough! I enjoy the rough ground, covered with snow. Hill hates it though, so I have to trick her into running close to a trail and then run on it hoping that she follows. There was enough snow on the ground to cover any ice, so the run was enjoyable. | ||

| Hill and I ran over to Comm. Ave to do another threshold run like last week. I felt really gross all day, but the run actually made me feel better! I need to remember that for next time when I don't feel like running. | ||

| A threshold run along Comm Ave. but a slightly different route since we couldn't cross the street because the lights were not in our favor. So we ran down the side road and then around the pond. My HR monitor wasn't working too well, whcih was sad, but I was working hard the whole way. | ||

| Ross and I went running around Newton. Running with Ross is a good way for me to get a longer run in at a quicker pace. We ran the loop that I ran the other day, and we were 3 minutes faster after 11 minutes, and then only about 4 minutes faster for the rest of it, so I'm not running too slowly when I'm alone! It didn't help that I am incedibly sore today from push ups, and my legs are tired from all the Step Mania. Last night Ross and I challenged eachother and I kicked his butt. The only song that he beat me on was an easy one that he picked. All the ones I picked were to hard for him :) | ||
Friday Feb 1 | ||
| other (Step Mania) 1:00:00 [1] | ||
| So I discovered the continuous mode in Step Mania. This is bad for me. In the regular mode you do three songs, then it kicks you back to main menu, where you can exit. With the endless mode you just go forever. So after playing for 45 minutes I discovered this mode and played for 1 hour continuously, which is about 35 songs. But I am only logging an hour because some of the songs were easy. As my right foot is dominant, I use it for the the up, right and down arrows. This leads to the ball of my left foot getting sore. So I practiced using my left foot to save my foot :) | ||
