Sunday Apr 30

Orienteering 1:34:50 [4] 11.4 km (8:19 / km)
I set a goal yesterday of 95 minutes today - and I just made it! A MUCH better day than yesterday, although still not perfect. The trail running let me read ahead enough so that I knew what I was doing. Took the wrong route choice to #3 (going low on the trails) and then lost 4 minutes on #7. It took me 5.5 minutes and 1.5 for everyone else! It was a simiar mistake from yesterday, where I went in off a trail into indistinct terrain. Came out the other side and paced with a bearing and I found it. After that I ran the trail to 8 and planned all my other long leg route choices. Which made the flow really nice and I started to gain time in the end, as I was pushing up the last hill to make 95 minutes. Won the course today!

Saturday Apr 29

Event: US Short and Long Championships

Orienteering 45:55 [4]
Just a disaster. I felt like I just couldn't get my feet under myself. Missed #2 by going too high and ran around before finding it. 3-6 was decent, then blew 7 and 8, both times trying to be careful and picking an attack point from the trails - only I wasn't at the attack point. I baubled around on 9 and then went 90 degrees the wrong way out of it and eventually saw 10 from down below. 11-14 went ok, and then was really high on 15. Just couldn't get into the speed or the navigating.

Friday Apr 28

Note
Not running today. I have friends visiting from DC and I've had a pretty hard week.

Thursday Apr 27

Orienteering 32:00 [2]
did some orienteering with dad. Practicing knowing where to attack off of trails. Did quite poorly on a few legs - but contrary to the usual, I managed to bouce back for the last few. Dad thinks I have amnesia while out in the woods - I suddenly do very strange things for no reason that I can explain later. I just simply can't remember why at the time I thought it was a good idea. And I wasn't even going that fast today... we'll see about this weekend...

Wednesday Apr 26

trail run 1:01:10 [4]
ran the skyline trail. the "short" version as dad calls it now. I call it the normal one and the other the "very very long" one. :)

Tuesday Apr 25

road run 35:00 [2]
to and from Wilson Mountain
trail run 14:00 [4]
Ran the Wilson Mountain Loop. Threshold pace - so HR around 178 (aiming for high 170s/180). Felt good. Decided only to do one since I have the sprint this evening.
Orienteering 20:00 [4]
evening CSU park-o. It was fun, made a few mistakes - Ross got me by 3 whole minutes :(

Monday Apr 24

Orienteering 2:20:00 [2]
picking up lots of controls from the Hale meet - over 50 controls I would say!! It was like slow intervals.....

Sunday Apr 23

Note
After sitting around all day in the cold starting people, I just couldn't get motivated to go out in rain showers and cold weather to pick up controls. So leaving them all out there until tomorrow for a long run with Dad. Of course, I think it's supposed to be cold and rainy tomorrow too....

Saturday Apr 22

Orienteering 50:00 [3]
setting out controls for my course on Sunday. Running pretty hard at the end to get my legs moving - and because it was starting to rain.

Friday Apr 21

road run 25:00 [2]
to and from Stoney Lea road
road run 17:00 [5]
ran 4 laps around Stoney Lea. We think the distance is a little under 1200 meters. Ran at HR around 185-190 - tried to keep it at 190. Times were 4:10, 4:11, 4:08, 4:10. Much faster than last time, although I was running at the correct HR...

Thursday Apr 20

other (road biking) 1:02:00 [3]
went on a bike ride with dad.

Wednesday Apr 19

Orienteering 15:00 [2]
putting up some more streamers and jogging to the car.
Orienteering 1:13:00 [4] 9 km (8:07 / km)
ran the long course that I have planned for Sunday. Nice course, with a fair amount of trail running - which I think is ok because these woods are full of thorns and underbrush and everything else. About 8.5/9k in straight lines, and I went a lot further taking the trails around. Of course, since I hung all the streamers yesterday and today I didn't get too lost.. :)
Note
Still coughing, though not as much. Started after the A-meet weekend and just won't let go. I've decided that sleeping 10+ hours a night should cure it...and maybe screaming loudly at Fenway during the Red Sox game tonight!!! :)

Tuesday Apr 18

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]
ran around putting up streamers for my course on Sunday.

Monday Apr 17

Orienteering 45:00 [3]
Did the WOC day 2green course at Surebridge Mountain with Hill and dad. I didn't get lost, which was nice, but took a few questionable route choices (aka, through the swamp). Hill followed me through and dad ran around :) We found something interesting at control #7 - still there after 13 years!!!
C • What is it? 2
road/trail run 20:00 [2]
running to and from the start/finish

Sunday Apr 16

road run 2:06:00 [3] 14.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
Went on a long run at my grandparents with Hill and Dad. It's hilly out there! We climbed up and down the same mountain a ton of times it felt - up and down on the back country roads. Just us, the cows, and 12 year olds driving trucks....

my grandparents sound concerned about my cough :)

Saturday Apr 15

road run 21:00 [2]
did an easy road run around my gradparents with Hill. Legs sore from yesterday...

Friday Apr 14

road run 35:00 [2]
to and from the track - I've developed quite a hacking cough... maybe it will go away on it's own...
track workout 18:00 [5]
hard track workout - felt harder than I thought it should, but my HR was around 190 while running, so it makes sense. Did 4 1200s with 4 minutes rest. Times were 4:41, 4:37, 4:38, 4:41. Quite tired.

Wednesday Apr 12

trail run 20:00 [2]
Orienteering 40:00 [2]
took it easy with dad. Went out and ran some old Blue Hills Traverse legs. Went alright...

Tuesday Apr 11

trail run 1:21:00 [4]
Dad and I ran the skyline trail - not the usual part that we run, but more of it. We ran the Skyline Race course. Which means longer and hillier. After we climbed the first hill and I was wondering if I was going to make it I looked down at my watch and we had been running for 5 minutes. I stopped looking at my watch after that. Dad did say that I beat the women's record on the course by over 4 minutes, so that's cool.

I was making up a poem as I was running though, to keep my mind off the pain.

To the top in WOC, it's a long way to go,
Just like dad climbing Big Blue, with me in tow.
Breathing hard and sweating buckets,
Sometimes I just want to say **** it. (poetic license please)
But the dreams of WOC keep me going,
Just glad I'm not in Sweden where it's snowing.
C • nice poem! 5

Monday Apr 10

road run 45:00 [2]
run around Dedham with dad

Sunday Apr 9

Orienteering 1:11:20 [4]
not as clean as Saturday. I missed a whole bunch of the conrtols in the more technical areas. Made lots of little mistakes.

Red 2 - Splits

Saturday Apr 8

Event: NEOC Spring Rock Festival and Intercollegiates

Orienteering 40:50 [4]
I had a really fun race on Saturday. I missed 8 - I was thinking, it's so easy. If I nmiss I'll hit the stonewall behind it. And I moved too far to the right in the reentrant and missed and hit the stonewall behind it. Lost about a minute.
Orienteering 14:58 [4]
The sprint relay, I ran first leg. I punched the wrong first control with everyone else, before punching the right one. I remember thinking, this doesn't look like a dot knoll - and it wasn't - it was a pit. Then did alright, missing a few of them by a little bit. Zan, Ross and I came in third! Chocolate prizes... yum

Red Day 1 - Splits

Sprint A - Splits

Thursday Apr 6

trail run 20:00 [1]
warm up and cool down.
Orienteering 25:00 [3]
ran 2 sprints at Houghton's Pond that were put on last year. I did MUCH better than the first time. I think it took me 22 minutes to do one of the sprints last time...
Note
So I finally did a quick look over at my march training. 32 hours, the most yet.
21.5 hours running, with 21 minutes being a track workout
10.5 hours of orienteering
21 minutes of lifting..... hmmm...

Last year March was also my highest amount of traing at 21 hours.

Wednesday Apr 5

road run 35:00 [2]
running to and from the track
track workout 10:00 [4] *
6x400. aiming for 1:40 for each 400. An easier track workout, because the speed was low. But my heart rate was pretty high since the rest felt really short, about 10-15 seconds, just enough time to look at the next leg on the map and plan a route.

Tuesday Apr 4

road run 30:00 [2]
an easy run around town with dad. Only guessing at the time because dad hasn't updated his log yet and he timed it.

Monday Apr 3

Orienteering 2:00:00 [3]
ran a course that was set a couple of weekends ago with dad, alternating legs. lost confidence and such about half way through. rainy, damp and chilly.

Sunday Apr 2

trail run 10:00 [1]
warm up
Orienteering 25:47 [4] 2.9 km (8:53 / km)
Sprint at Needham Town Forest. Some bad route choices.
Orienteering 26:00 [3] 2.6 km (10:00 / km)
Second sprint. Nice weather.

Sprint 1 - Splits

Sprint 2 - Splits

Saturday Apr 1

Note
Class all day and then I didn't run
