Friday Jun 30

trail run 1:00:00 [2]
So I taught an orienteering camp this week to 4th and 5th graders, and today was the day that they got to go out into real woods on a real o map, instead of the one I made of the middle school (although I did make it in ocad). I ran to put out the controls, and then ran around pretty fast while they were all out in pairs doing courses, becasue I wanted to try and keep tabs on them all and make sure none were totally lost. 2 out of the 4 groups finished a course, and the other 2 got lost enough that they didn't have time to finsh, although both did make it back to the finish area. Then I ran to pick up the controls.
C • Glad you're teaching O' 2
road run 30:00 [2]
I picked Hill up from the train station after she got out off work and since she was going running I decided that I had to go with her. Well, I learned a valuable lesson. I had *just* eaten dinner, but I've run after eating before and it's never bothered me. I don't think I've ever run right after a big meal of pasta though. I got 17 minutes into the run and just had to turn back. I was feeling so nauseous that I just couldn't run anymore. I started to walk back and then got guilted into running when I saw this old lady with big sunglasses and a bright pink jacket walking faster than me. I started walking again when she was out of sight. But then another runner went by (who Hill and I had seen running earlier) and he also saw me walking. Well, I can only feel like so much of a slacker. I just couldn't walk all the way home. So I slowly jogged home, trying to keep my dinner down (which I did). I also saw two deer, one walking down a very residenial street. It caught me by surprise because it was so out of place. Trotting along like he was out for his evening jog too.

Thursday Jun 29

road run 35:00 [2]
running to and from the track.
track workout 18:00 [5]
first we (Hill and I) ran 2 1200s at 4:29 and 4:27. Then we ran 8 400s, with about 3 minutes rest between. It felt really hard running on the track today, I think because it was hot and humid. I'm used to warm and rainy. 400 times were 77, 79, 80, 81, 81, 82, 81, 79. Aiming for about 82.

Wednesday Jun 28

Note
I've been busy this week planning my orienteering courses (I'm teaching a week long orienteering course to 4th and 5th graders). Today during my training time I took out the long quali map for Denmark and drew a long course and planned routes.

Tuesday Jun 27

Orienteering 53:00 [4]
ran two old relay course at Houghton's Pond. I know the courses pretty well, so it was really woods running training with a bit of navigation thrown in. Running really hard, especially at the end of each course.

Monday Jun 26

Orienteering 35:00 [3]
An orienteering exercise at Propect Hill working on speeds during legs and attack points.

Sunday Jun 25

trail run 2:00:00 [2]
A long trail run in the Blue Hills with dad and Hill. Dad and I would stop at the really big puddles in the trail and make little drain ditches off to the side so the water could drain off. Hill wasn't nearly as amused as dad and I so she kept running. Then it was a good sprint workout to catch back up to her :) We ran back on the same trail section later in the run and some of the puddles were smaller!

Saturday Jun 24

Orienteering 57:28 [3]
ran the red course at Diamond Hill in Rhode Island. The race didn't go great - but not horribly either. I had some really good legs and some where I could have done better. Another wet rainy cool day. When will it be summer?

Red - Splits

Friday Jun 23

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]
did some orienteering in the rain with Zan at Powisett.

Thursday Jun 22

Orienteering 45:00 [1]
a miserable attempt at orienteering in the Blue HIlls. Walking more than running because I was constantly lost.

Wednesday Jun 21

road run 35:00 [2]
running to the track. Quite a group going this time - me, Dad, Hill, Zan and Ross.
track workout 18:00 [4]
ran 4x1200 with about 4 minutes rest at interval pace, which means Hill and I are aiming for 4:30. Nice easy splits to remember :) Ran 4:29, 4:27, 4:27, 4:25. Hill passed me in the last 200 of the last one to finish 2 seconds ahead of me. If I relally wanted to, I could have kept up with her :) But the point wasn't to race and we were already going way under our interval time. And I was tired :) Maybe I should try an hour of biking, 15 minutes of erging, lifting and running all in one day...

Tuesday Jun 20

trail run 30:00 [2]
another day of setting out and picking up the same controls. A bit cooler today, but still hot.
Orienteering 1:10:00 [3]
ran an old course at Boojum Rock that Barb set up earlier in the year. It went really badly when I did it the first time, and I was pleased that it went so much better this time. I ran with a black and white copy of the map and it was almost nice to have the map simplified like that for me. Just contour reading (trails were already taken off the map for the exercise.) I still got off one of the line-os, but otherwise was pleased at the second time around.

Monday Jun 19

trail run 30:00 [2]
Setting and picking up controls for the Melrose school workshop. So glad I don't teach Middle School.
road biking (road biking) 1:20:00 [3]
Road Bike this evening with Hill and Dad. It was just too hot to think about doing a workout. We thought about hills, or a track workout, but they all got vetoed. So we biked around in beautiful evening weather. Legs were tired at the end.

Sunday Jun 18

road/trail run 25:00 [3]
Dad and Hill got up early to do a long run, but I really couldn't fathom getting up early and driving to Dedham to run. So I slept in and did a shorter run around Newton. It was good I think, because I was feeling sort of stuffy and now I feel better :) Well worth the sleep.

Saturday Jun 17

Orienteering 31:00 [3]
First sprint at Frankln Park. Did this one with Dad and Hill, taking it at a easy pace. Quite hot.
Orienteering 25:00 [4]
Second sprint at Franklin Park, actually an old sprint which I ran backwards. I ran this one alone and did alright. So hot - it was hard to run fast. Made one silly error at the end - put myself further down on the trail than I was and cut off too early.
other (Tennis) 1:00:00 [1]
Hill and I played tennis for the first time this year. We're pretty bad, so there was a lot of running around and lunging for balls.

Friday Jun 16

road run 38:00 [2]
just ran around on the roads in Dedham with Dad. Yesterday was a hard day and I had to gt home to meet some friends :)

Today was the last day of school!! Ah, the life of a teacher and summer vacation :)

Thursday Jun 15

trail run 1:17:00 [4]
really, I think this was intensity 4.5 to 5, but I wasn't racing and I think of 5 as only for short hard sprints or a race. Hill, dad and I ran the Skyline Trail Race route again. Last time Hill and I ran around 83 minutes, so this was faster. And man, was I feeling it. I was pushing really hard the whole way and it felt like we should have carved away more time from last time, but oh well. Hot and humid here and finally sunny.

Wednesday Jun 14

road run 37:00 [2]
ran over to the track and back. Saw a cute, big turtle on the way back home and then saw a smashed one on the road. Dad and I thought we should make a "SLOW, Turtle Crossing" sign for the road. Poor turtles.
track workout 21:00 [3]
ran 6x800 on the track. At Threshold pace - aiming for 3:14 but was slower on them. Really trying to run at a pace where I could read and naviagte with the Denmark map I was running with.
3:17, 3:17, 3:17, 3:22, 3:14, 3:13

Tuesday Jun 13

Orienteering 45:00 [2]
did a compass exercise in the Blue HIlls with Dad and Hill. Practiced taking bearings and pace counting to find features. Worked well sometimes and not so well others. Overall I was happy with it. I tried both my baseplate and thumb compass and I found it much easier to follow the bearings on my baseplate. I think I'll stick to using a base plate in longer races and the thumb compass in sprints. Is is wise to use both?
C • Base of Thumb 2

Monday Jun 12

road run 50:00 [2]
running over to Westfield Street and then running back down the hill between intervals.
road run (hill workout) 19:30 [5]
ran up Westfield Street 3 times. It's one mile uphill, with a flatter section in the middle. I ran them all out, which I have never done before. Times were:
6:19 (3:06 half)
6:29 (3:12 half)
6:25 (3:19 half)

I impressed myself with fast times :) Especially on the last one, which was by far the most painful.
Took 10-12 minutes to run down the hill and start again.

Sunday Jun 11

road biking 2:30:00 [1]
went to Martha's Vineyard with my aunt, mom and Hill. Just a day trip to bike around. It's so flat there that I didn't change gears once on my bike, but it was a beautiful day (finally no rain!!!). Took it easy biking to the different towns and to the beach.

Saturday Jun 10

trail run 1:45:00 [2]
a long trail run inthe slight rain with Hill and Ross. The water was so high on some trails that we had to wade through puddles halfway up our calves - gross.

Friday Jun 9

Note
Didn't train today. Got out of work and then went in to Boston to meet some people for dinner and see a friend in a sketch comedy show. Fun Friday :)

Thursday Jun 8

road run 37:00 [2]
ran to and from the track in heavy to light mist. Actually fine weather for running - high 50s and misty. Not exactly Denmark conditions, but pleasant running.
track workout 14:00 [4]
Track workout with Hill (dad took my car in to get inspected and it passed yay!!). Ran 4x1200 with 4 mins of rest between. I used to run these at 4:40, but now I'm trying to run them at 4:30.
Times were 4:31, 4:30, 4:28, 4:25

Maybe it's Hill pushing me or the puddles we were running through on the track that helped me along.

Wednesday Jun 7

rowing machine 25:00 [3]
rowed on the rowing machine. It was POURING all day and I just didn't want to go outside in it... neither did Hill or dad. The woods would be wet, the trails flooded and I'd get splashed on the roads - I couldn't win!
lifting/strength 3:00 [2]
actually did some crunches and push ups :)

Tuesday Jun 6

Orienteering 1:53:00 [3]
Ran three relay courses at Houghton's Pond. Ran a bit slower than last time when we did this. Hill was with us, and where dad and I know pretty much when all the controls are, Hill hasn't done these courses before. Still a good workout.

Monday Jun 5

road run 58:00 [2]
running around Dedham - warm up for the workout.
road run 12:00 [4]
ran 4x 3minutes around Stoney Lea.

Sunday Jun 4

Orienteering 1:05:33 [4]
a local meet at Nobscott. I tried to run as if this were a real competitive meet. Sometimes I get too relaxed on local meets. I knew that Boris and Will ran around 60 minutes and I was having a good race so I was aiming for that. I made no real mistakes. I was too high in the reentrant on 7, but it was also hung off to one side. I was hesitant on the way to 10 at the end because I wasn't exactly sure where I was - this happened a few times. I left 11 at the wrong angle and hit a different trail than I thought. Took 2 steps the wrong way before figuring it out. Otherwise I ran well and stayed on top of things.
Back felt fine while running. Still a bit sore when moving around though.

Red - Splits

Saturday Jun 3

Note
Dad, Hill and I drove ALL the way down to Harriman sprints, only to have them be canceled. On top of that it was pouring rain, both there and back in Newton. After spending 7 hours in the car I just wasn't up to a run in the rain. Maybe it's also good to rest my back. Still painful when moving sometimes.

Friday Jun 2

trail run 1:22:00 [4]
The Skyline trail run with dad and Hill. It felt like we were going a lot slower than last time I ran it, but Hill and I were only about a minute behind my other time. I did fall on some slick sheer rock, as it was raining. I came down really hard on my tailbone/butt. It didn't hurt much for the rest of the run, but walking later that evening was painful.

Thursday Jun 1

trail run 41:00 [2]
a nice trail run with Dad before the sprint. Not too hard.
Orienteering 27:13 [4]
The last CSU sprint this season. I had trouble on a few of them - missing in the broad empty hillsides. I was only 10 seconds behind Ross - I think I missed my chance to beat him!

I am going to edit this and say that after looking at official results, I was only 4 seconds behind :)
C • Keep trying. 3
