| Orienteering 1:20:00 [2] | ||
| First day of training in Australia. Cold and rainy! The sun might have peeked out when we were running, but as soon as we got back it started raining again. Ross and I made up a course for the juniors and then we went out and got all the controls, trading off legs. The van wouldn't start this morning. Later a mechanic will visit and spray Start Ya Bastard in the start thingy and it will start! From now on, Tom has to use Start Ya Bastard every morning... | ||

| trail run (beach running) 1:01:00 [2] | ||
| THe last day in Carlsbad. Ross and I got up early to go running before the heat and the people on the beach. We decided to run down the beach to the pier. We began running in the softer sand, but after about 5 minutes of that we moved to the harder sand. The tide was further out than last time, which meant we could actually run along the beach and not have to run on the rocks if we timed ti well. I timed one badly, and ended up with my foot in the surf over my ankle. Lots of people out surfing and others walking the beach. Took about 33 minutes to run to the pier and then we ran back.
Took the train back to LA and we will be leaving for the airport in about an hour. Then the long flight to Australia...

| road/trail run 1:27:00 [2] | ||
| Ross and I took the bus down to the lagoon. We got dropped off and decided that maybe the trail started on the other side of the lagoon. So we ran across the lagoon on the road, but then proceeded to run down the sidewalk of a main road to the end of the lagoon. We then started on a trail that we thought would go up the opposite side of the lagoon, but we ran into private property, but we could see the trail where we wanted to be on the other side. After slogging through mud and past palm trees, we made our way back out to the residential street and followed that around. Then we were probably only running on the trail for 15 minutes! When it ended, we had to wind our way through some residentail streets, to get back to the main road where the bus would pick us up again. Just as we were appraoching the road, our bus passed us. Knowing that we would now have to wait another half hour for the next bus to show up, we ran down the main road until it ran out of sidewalk and then waited at the bus stop. Ross had stored our bus tickets in his pocket and they were rather damp, so the wait time provided us an opportunity to dry out the tickets. | ||
| other (ocean running) 15:00 [1] | ||
| Ross and I went boogie boarding. It was a blast! After boogieing (I don't know what word to use here) in on the waves, we then had to run back out into the ocean. It was hard work! And scary at times when I saw the waves barreling down at me. I once got completly knocked over and turned around by a wave, and another time torn off my boogie bord by one. I totally can boogie board better than Ross, although after a few pointers he was doing much better :) Earlier when I had run down the beach, I noticed that not too many of the people were in the water and some had wet suits on. I was hesitant the whole time about going in. But really, the people are just wimps! They have obviously never swam in the Atlantic- where your feet start to go numb if you stand around. | ||

| road run 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| Ross's grandmother told us about a 3 mile trail around a lagoon only about 1 mile away. We set out after lunch and ran, and ran, and ran and never arrived at the lagoon. Eventually we gave up and turned around to run back home. The run was along the main road along the beach, which isn't as nice as the beach itself, but I don't think either of us were up to struggling in the sand again today. Tomorrow we plan on takig the bus down the road to the lagoon and running from there. | ||
Sunday Jun 24 | ||
| trail run (beach running) 42:17 [2] | ||
| Ross and I arrived in Carlsbad, CA this afternoon to visit his grandmother. We decided to head out onto the beach to go running. The beacj was quite crowded with people who we had to run skillfully around. I forgot how difficult it is to run on sand! Good ankle workout. It's beautiful weather here, warm, but not humid. Ross's grandmother's retirement community is beautiful, with a view of the Pacific. | ||
Friday Jun 22 | ||
| road run 37:00 [1] | ||
| An easy run around Dedham with Hill. Said goodbye to the family, as I leave for my travels tomorrow! (I'm sort of freaking out because I haven't started packing yet...) | ||
Thursday Jun 21 | ||
| Orienteering 1:09:00 [2] | ||
| Ran the line-o that Alexi set up last week. It was thick and my legs were sore from yesterday :) I ran it once forward and then again backwards, although I skipped the really thick part the second time. | ||
| track workout 12:00 [3] | ||
| Drove the the MIT track for another track workout. It actually started with a map sprint exercise. Sprint to the map, where there are two control circles for each number. You have to decide which is higher in elevation, memorize where it is, and run back to draw it on your map. There were 12 controls, and the run to the map was probably about 50 meters. | ||
| track workout 3:30 [4] | ||
| After the map exercise, we ran 6x200 on the track. Sprint the 200, and then jogged looking and discussing Ukraine maps with Hill and Viktoria. The rest between each 200 was abnormally long, since everyone else was studying routes on a harriman map, drawing their routes, and then discussing them. So this was the longest track workout that I have ever done, while running less than 1 mine. Although it was certainly worth my time :) | ||
| road run 22:00 [2] | ||
| warm up and then jogging the 200 meters beween each 200. | ||
Wednesday Jun 20 | ||
| road run 25:00 [2] | ||
| running to the track and running home. I feel like it was longer, but I guess we stood around between intervals, so the workout just took awhile. | ||
| track workout 20:00 [4] | ||
| Teack workout. 4x1200m with full recovery and then dad surprised us with 6x120m which we ran on the football field.
1200: 4:28 rest: 5:00 1200: 4:30 rest: 6:30 1200: 4:28 rest 7:30 1200: 4:28 each 120m took 19 seconds, with maybe a 1:30 rest? (I didn't time the rest).

Monday Jun 18 | ||
| trail run 1:01:02 [3] | ||
| weekly skyline trail run. It's nice to runthis a lot - it becomes a time trials loop. Today dad came along and he got us going faster in the beginning, then Hill took off at the end and I chased her down. This is certainly my best time this season and possibly my best ever :) | ||

Sunday Jun 17 | ||
| road/trail run 1:03:00 [2] | ||
| I got Ross to get up and come running with me this morning at 8:30. It was nice to run around at an easy pace, but I felt tired. Ran down to Hemlock Gorge before going to grandparents' for father's day. | ||
Friday Jun 15 | ||
| road/trail run 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| easy run around Dedham with Hill. She had to be somewhere at 5:30 and my stomach kind of felt funny. | ||
Thursday Jun 14 | ||
| road run 50:00 [1] | ||
| Running over to the Track with dad and Hill, and running between each 200 and 400. Since the barriers are still up, dad went over earlier and loosened the nuts on the cables that go from the barries to the fence. Then we went thre, undid the chains, and put then back up when we were done :)
| ||
| track workout 10:00 [3] | ||
| 3 sets of 200, 200, 400. Supposed to be full recovery between, but probably wasn't as I was chasing Hill and we jogged a 200 between each one. Times were from 38-42 for 200s and 82-83 for 400. | ||
Wednesday Jun 13 | ||
| road biking 1:15:00 [2] | ||
| road biking with Hill and Dad. I'm just not as fast as them :) | ||
Tuesday Jun 12 | ||
| Orienteering 38:32 [3] | ||
| Ran the motala course from this past Sunday's NEOC picnic. They were nice enough to leave out the streamers and even hang streamers where there weren't any :) Dad, hill and I went out and we ran the three loops in a different order. As I was coming into the last control, I could see Hill just ahead of me. I knew she was going to a control slightly higher than mine, so I thought maybe I could catch her. I didn't and she finished about 4 seconds ahead of me. But, as she finally admitted, she did not go all the way to her last control. She hit the road, could see the boulder and then ran down the road. Of course, I actually ran to the wrong control during one fo the loops, so I am probably disqualified anyways. There were a lot of shared controls, and I was running into an area, and I just ran to the control I had already been to, instead of the one I was supposed to go to. But I made the course longer. As opposed to Hilly. What a slacker :) | ||
| trail run 20:00 [1] | ||
| running around the pond to warm up and then jogging back to the car. Legs were tired from yesterday, and it took awhile to really get moving. | ||
Monday Jun 11 | ||
| road run 35:00 [2] | ||
| Running to Wilson Mountain, down the road between the loops and home again with dad and Hill. | ||
| trail run (threshold) 28:00 [4] | ||
| Ran two Wilson Mountain loops. HR around 182 the first time and a bit lower the second time because I was tired. Supposed to be running at threshold, which the HR was, but I felt like I was running quite fast. Maybe it was because I was running after Hill both times and trying not to lose sight of her. Times:
first loop: 13:24 second loop: 13:51 A bit too much of a difference between the loops, but I think this is the first time I Have run them both under 14...
Saturday Jun 9 | ||
| trail run 1:03:16 [3] | ||
| skyline trail run with Hill. We tried to run the beginning faster, which I think we may have done. We did manage to shave off over a minute and a half from last week, so that's nice! Getting closer to some of my fastest times... | ||
Friday Jun 8 | ||
| road run 45:00 [1] | ||
| The run to and from the Dedham track. Hill and I took a longer way home to get in a longer run. She is a horrible influence on me. | ||
| track workout 14:00 [4] | ||
| 3 1200s. times: 4:26, 4:26, 4:25. Aiming for 4:29. 3-5 minutes of rest. | ||
Wednesday Jun 6 | ||
| road run 45:00 [1] | ||
| Warm up and cool down for the threshold run with Hill. | ||
| road run (threshold) 22:00 [3] | ||
| Threshold run with Hill, starting on Comm Ave. We took a detour the first time because we weren't going to be able to crross the street and I didn't want to slow down. So we went around the block. The second time we just started running down a side street unitl I recognized some place and then got on a new path. While running down the side street we passed a guy running who I guess didn't expect us and said "holy shit!" as we ran past. Oh yea, we're fast :)
HR was a bit low in the beginning, but I couldn't get the leg speed up. 178 in the beginning, although around 184 in the end.

Sunday Jun 3 | ||
| Event: NEOC - Nobscot | ||
| Orienteering 1:01:52 [3] | ||
| Oritneering at Nobscot. It's a fairly simple map, and yet I managed to make two mistakes. On #6 I thought I had a good route planned out, but I didn't follow my compass carefully and got caught messing around in swampy green. Then on #11 I tried to be sneaky and cut the trail, but then, for still unknown reasons, never saw the trail I was aiming for.. or something. I still have to go back and look at it. I wore the HR monitor, to see what my HR is when I am orienteering. It was around 175 when I was working hard, but would drop much lower going tin and out of controls. About 180 is threshold, and I don't think I was even working that hard. | ||
| Orienteering 44:57 [2] | ||
| After the red I took a quick drink and headed out on the green course, which was the same as the red, minus a few controls and plus one more. I took a different route to #1 just to see what it was like, and I got rather confused :) No more mistakes after that though, and I had the chance to redo #6 and I did it quite well the second time. Still, Hill beat me on green by less than a minute and dad beat me on red by the same amount. I was really starting to feel the last few days of hard training, after a few weeks of minimal training. The front of my quads are really sore. My HR during the green was lower - around 165. My legs were just too tired to go faster. | ||
Saturday Jun 2 | ||
| trail run 1:05:00 [3] | ||
| Skyline Trail run with Hill. In the beginning we weren't moving too fast - legs were a bit tired and sore from yesterday. Then the hills in the middle of the run were alright, but then at the end Hill picked it up and I chased after her almost at full speed for the last 15 minutes. Wasn't wearing the HR monitor, but felt like I was running above threshold, especially since the legs were burning :) Still, I think it's a slow time for working so hard at the end of the run. | ||

Friday Jun 1 | ||
| road run 35:00 [1] | ||
| 12 minutes to run over to the track, and 12 minutes back, plus the time jogging around between. | ||
| track workout 5:46 [5] | ||
| max:198 | ||
| 1 mile time trail on the track with Hill. We arrived and ran 2 200s at a 5:40 mile pace, but then just as we were about to begin, it started raining harder. So we went for shelter, and then it started thundering and lightning. So we had to wait about 10 minutes to begin.
First lap was on pace, 2nd a bit slow, 3rd we were back on, and then 4th we got a bit ahead. I was leading the first two, and then Hill passed me at the beginning of the third. She didn't gain on me for the last 500 meters, but I also couldn't catch her. My HR maxed at 198 :) Rather impressive :)
| track workout 4:20 [5] | ||
| After the mile we jogged a lap and then started running 4 200s and jogging/walking 200 between. Times were 34, 35. 37. 38. I was quite tired. | ||
