Sunday Sep 30

trail run 10:00 [1]
warming up with Hill around the parking area.
Orienteering 58:36 [4]
A much better race. I was navigating well from the beginning and feeling mostly confident with my routes. #5 was a short compass leg and as I was leaving #4 I said to myself "Ok, short compass leg. On short legs you can only lose time, not gain time. So go slowly and make sure you stay on your compass. Even pace count." Of course, I'm saying this to myself as I am running blindly in sortof the right direction after leaving the control the wrong way. Of course, I miss the control, stand around, and then figure it out. I had the right advice, I just didn't listen to myself :) A few more times when I had to stop and relocate later on in the course as well - #8, #12, #15, but overall much better than yesterday and something I can work with!
C • Nice job! 2

Red Day 2 - Splits

Saturday Sep 29

Event: Boulder Dash 2007

trail run 10:00 [1]
warming up around the field with Hill before we started.
Orienteering 1:07:37 [4]
Day 1 of the Boulder Dash. A pretty bad race for me overall. I began thinking that I had a great attackpoint and plan to #1, but I missed when I went over the hill and stood around trying to figure it out. The next couple of controls were green, and I again would wander in the correct direction, only to have to stop to figure out where I was going. My real problem came on #13, where I made a parallel error and ran up the wrong reentrant, which wasn't really shown on the map. I wasndered around, actually thought maybe I went too far, which wasn't the case, and went all the way back to #12 to try again. This time I just followed my compass and figured out quickly what I did the first time. Not very confident during the race and had no good plans or flow.

Red Day 1 - Splits

Friday Sep 28

road run 43:00 [1]
A easy run around Dedham with Hill and mom. My leg hurt quite a bit during most of it, but I think eventually I stopped limping...

Wednesday Sep 26

trail run 2:09:00 [2]
Went for a long run with Hill and Dad in the Blue Hills. I haven't done a long run since before WOC, so it's been awhile. We ran on trails, and a bit on the part of the skyline trail that I hardly ever run, plus a bit through the woods when we lost the trail. And now I can't walk properly :) My legs are hurting, especially my left thigh muscle. I'm hoping it's just sore and I didn't do anything serious to it. I feel like a weakling :)

Tuesday Sep 25

Note
Happy Birthday Hill!!! (She's 23 today!)
Orienteering 1:16:00 [2]
Did a course out at Baldwin Hill with Hill :) Joe Sackett and Alexei joined Dad, Hill and I as well. It was a beautiful fall day that always reminds me of orienteering - I was glad to be out there!

Sunday Sep 23

trail run 15:00 [1]
I had a hard time warming up because I was tired and I wasn't quite sure how long Hill would take and when I would need to be ready.
Orienteering 44:02 [4]
So Team Killer Bunnies from NEOC, consisting of Tim Parson on first leg (first place!), Phil Bricker on second leg (first place!) and Hill on third leg (2nd place!) and me on last leg. I was actually quite nervous, but I did the first loop well. I took good routes, not moving too fast and having to walk some of the uphills (I was so tired), but finding all the controls. Then I came through the spectator control about 40 seconds behind Joe, having caught up some time. I messed around a bit on the small loop right before the map exchange, not being clean and ruching everything. Then at the map exchange I tried to run the wrong way :) I missed #17 by a bit to the left, and had to stop to figure it tou, and then I drifted too far to my right going to #18 and again had to stop quickly to relocate. Then Joe really killed me on the downhill run to #19 - even though I made no mistakes he really pulled ahead of me there. He gained back about another 40 seconds after the spectator control. With a clean race, it might have been a photo finish.....
We took second place, which is still quite impressive and we were the only top team with 2 females :)

Saturday Sep 22

Event: Sprint Series Final & US Relay Champs

trail run 40:00 [1]
This is the total time warming up for all sprints. I warmed up before all three, and then cooled down after the second (my legs were tight from chasing Mike S. to the finish, maybe not the best idea considering I had to race again later (he ran it in 37 seconds, I did it in 38... not too bad :) ))
Orienteering 17:47 [5]
I started off doing well and immediately realizing how easy it was going to be to overrun everything. I got turned around and mande a 90 degree error trying to get to #5, and Brendan caught me. Then leaving that and going to #6 I missed my trail and ran around a bit before relocating off the field. Then on #7 I ran further in the field than I thought and even though Mike caught be and was running down the right trail, I headed off way beyond the control in the woods. After 7 I managed to settle down, also helped by the fact that I had a group of guys - Greg, Alexei and some others - running in a pack just beyond my reach.
Orienteering 14:30 [5]
Sprint B. A much better race! I never felt like I was moving terribly fast, but I was managing to follow along on the map and not get ahead of myself. I had good attackpoints, and went slow enough to figure out where I was and stay on my compass. I found that ignoring the trails and using the boulders and frisbee golf goals was easiest :) I was ahead, beside, and behind Gerald Yip for much of the second half and punched the final control with him and Mike S. Made for a fast run in!
C • That run in was pretty inte... 2
Orienteering 17:19 [5]
And the final sprint! I had variation 4 which had the loop to the east first, then the loop to the south and then the loop to the north. I had a great time running this sprint, really working hard right from the beginning. I figured I was in the lead after the first loop, but it was hard to tell because I wasn't sure each loop would take the same amount of time. I had no real troule while onthe first map - I had to slow down a bit to find the trail that went into the green for the dot knoll by the trail. Then on map 2, the common loop, I didn't realize that trail went through the hill on #17, and so I ran around to the opposite side, paused, and then saw the trail. I had a wonderful time running off the map on the way to #18. I made a mistake at the same intersection where I made the mistake during sprint B. I made a 90 degree error, and followed the wrong stonewall, right off the map. I realized I was confused and knew that if I ran west I would hit the open area with the house or the road. I hit the house, on the southeast side and ran up to the trail that went into the yard. I started down that trail, but then saw that there was a chainlink fence between the yard and the woods where I wanted to be, so I turned around out of the yard, and took the trail that ran along north of the yard. As I was leaving #18, I saw Hill approaching through the thick slash off to the east, and then a little ways down the trail I passed Pavlina coming into the control. I was quite frightened, as I felt that my legs had nothing left if it came down to a final sprint. But I found #19 without problem, and then it was jsut around the building and into the finish!

Sprint A Course 3 (R/B) - Splits

Sprint B Course 3 (R/B) - Splits

Sprint C - Splits

Friday Sep 21

road run 45:00 [1]
Running over to Wilson mountain and back with the secret sister who no longer can be named. This also includes the time jogging between intervals while looking at a course designed on the sprint map for this weekend (I think I have done more sprint training for this weekend than for WOC. It also might have something to do with the fact that sprint training is fun and I've been focusing on fun training to get me out the door).
C • Ha ha! 1
trail run 7:00 [3]
45 second on, 45 seconds off (because it was easiest to set the watch like this) x 9 around the Wilson Mountain trail. Not fast pickups, because we are tired :) But faster than I would normally be running.

Wednesday Sep 19

trail run 23:00 [1]
warm up as dad set out the streamers.
Orienteering 13:05 [5]
The first of two sprints set by dad in the Blue Hills in area where we don't run often. The sprints were quite short with 8-9 controls. I really messed up the first sprint though. I think that #2 was hung high and then there was an orange streamer hung on the pink streamer course which I hit when I left #2 and then thought it was 3. Then I ran to "#4" which was really #3 and I started to run to #5 before I realized something was wrong. Yeah, it took me that long. Then I ran to #4, never actually finding #3. Not the best race.
Orienteering 8:30 [5]
Then I ran the pink streamer course and that was basically flawless.
Orienteering 10:00 [5]
I ran the orange streamer course again and picked up the streamers. It went much better this time :) No mistakes.

Tuesday Sep 18

trail run 15:00 [1]
Warm up before the sprints.
Orienteering 20:00 [4]
First sprint, which I ran with Hill. We traded off controls. I have run the course before, but it was Hill's first time.
Orienteering 20:00 [4]
Second sprint, this one on my own.

Monday Sep 17

road biking 1:12:00 [2]
A road bike with dad and hill.

Sunday Sep 16

road run 1:16:00 [2]
Run with Ross around Newton. Neither of us really wanted to go so it's a surprise we even got out the door. I felt tired the whole way.
C • You Bum! 5

Friday Sep 14

road biking 1:15:00 [2]
This is my 1000 training session entered :) Bike ride with dad and mom.

Thursday Sep 13

trail run 17:00 [1]
Warm up, cool down and jogging to the start of each sprint.
Orienteering 21:00 [5]
Dad and I went to the Blue Hills (big surprise) to do sprint training on old sprint courses. But we shortened them so that they were about 6 minutes each and I would run as hard as I could the whole way. The first one took 6:20 then 6:40 then 9:00. The third one was thicker and probably longer. I was working quite hard, with my HR even getting as high as 197 during the second sprint.

Wednesday Sep 12

trail run 1:03:16 [3]
Ran the skyline trail run with dad. I didn't know what to expect as I have not run it in awhile, and in the beginning I was hoping to run under 67. It was a beautiful fall day!
C • under 67 9

Tuesday Sep 11

lifting/strength (pilates) 20:00 [1]
It was rainy, I was lazy...

Monday Sep 10

road biking 1:05:00 [2]
Another bike ride with dad - shorter as I had to get to class.

Sunday Sep 9

Orienteering 1:38:33 [4]
The course was the same distance as yesterday, but my time was slower. I didn't feel as disheartened by this course, but everyone kicked my butt... again. Some really bad controls mixed in with some ok ones. I ran right by 5, thinking the pond next to the control was an extension of the swamp. I spent a long time wandering and then relocating back to exactly where I had been and within 15 feet of the control. 6, 7, and 8 went well, which was nice considering that yesterday I messed up and then never got back on track. I missed 9, when again I was heading right towards the control on my compass and I made a parallel error and ran down the wrong nose, only to relocate back to where I had been. Read reentrants wrong on 11 and made another parallel error. Finished the course well, getting back into the groove, even though Ross kicked my butt yet again... :) It was pouring ran during the beginning/middle of the course, but it was fun to run in the rain. I felt cold at one point, but warmed up again. We were all quite messy when we finished :)

Blue Day 2 - Splits

Blue Day 1 - Splits

Saturday Sep 8

Event: UNO Camping Weekend

Orienteering 1:35:08 [4]
Ran Blue at Pawtuckaway. Although I was tired for the first 7 controls, and a bit sloppy with route choice and execution, I found all the controls. Then it went downhill fast. I really messed up #8, thinking I hit two boulders by the swamp (dad also thought he found these boulders and then got lost just like me). I went too far and then wandered before relocating after awhile. I messed up 9, being too low in the reentrant, and thinking I think I'm here... I think it's up that hill.. but then not going up the hill until I sasw two other people punch the controls. 10 was slow but I found it. 11 was slow and I started going north instead of east in the middle of the leg. On 12 I set out then was like, ok enough of this. My strategy, whatever it is, is not working. So i went very slow to 12 and spiked it. Then messed up 13, but relocated without wandering. I really messed 14, doing something and missing and wandering. 15 was fine and then slugging to the finish.

Ew.
Orienteering 45:00 [3]
A bus for the Bus-O. I thought this would be easy running through the woods, but I was wrong. At a good pace I was barely making my bus stops. Having to follow the line slowed me down. I did managed to make all my stops on time, but I didn't see anyone until I got into the inner circle. Fun! And good training!
Orienteering 15:00 [2]
The vampire-o with mom. We weren't going to run, but then we got a good card by vamping someone, so mom and I didn't want to get caught. So we ran :)

Friday Sep 7

road biking 1:20:00 [2]
Went road biking with dad. I thought it was going to be a bit shorter, but we just kept on going... :)

Thursday Sep 6

Note
Thursday is grad school class doy, so it will have to be my day off. I also have class on Mondays, but late enough in the evening that I should be able to get a run in.

Wednesday Sep 5

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]
Pia set up an orienteering course at Prospect Hill for this week's training. I was having a bit of trouble the whole wya through, not flowing too well. The course was designed to have short legs that changed directions and then longer legs. It was getting dark as I headed towards the last few controls and I knew they were on a tricky hillside, so I didn't do the last few. I thought I was taking splits the whole way but my watch was full so I only took 3.

Tuesday Sep 4

road/trail run 52:00 [2]
Running around Dedham with dad.
Note
I went to an island for the long weekend and didn't do any running. I did play tennis and capture the flag though, so I was active :)
Note
My battle wound from Ukraine has finally been seen by a professional. It has grown to about 3 times the original size, is still pussing, and has developed a hard outer edge (ewwww). After much advice and some worried comments by my mom I went to the doctor. I explained the whole thing to her, and she never really did tell me what it was (I suspect she has no idea) but I am now starting antibiotics and cream stuff in hopes that it gets better and stops itching and expanding. She did not seem concerned for my life though.
C • Sounds like something Marc has... 5
