Orienteering 12:57 [2]
shoes: Montrail
Setting out half the controls for one of the sprints at Pine Hill.
Orienteering 18:56 [4] 2.8 mi (6:45 / mi)
shoes: Montrail
Running sprint #1. Ran hard, except when I was caught in briers (which I always thought was spelled with an a). I was trying to punch each control in the correct box on the punchcard which was in my map case. This is difficult! I had to unfold the map each time and I was losing valuable seconds. So going into 14, I planned how I was going to leave for 15 and just unfolded the map in advance in order to punch quickly. Well, I went down the wrong trail on the way out, had to climb up to the correct trail and then didn't see the control right away because I was staring into the setting sun. It was scenic at least! Struggling a bit for speed.

Tuesday Apr 29

trail run 9:00 [1]
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Jogging over to the start. Dad, Ross and I went to Mt. Misery to run the old "sprint" course. Ross was home sick today so he was able to come, which was fun :) The plan was to run the sprint forwards and backwards as hard as we could.
Orienteering 22:50 [5] 4.5 km (5:04 / km)
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
The sprint forwards. Ross and I started at the same time in the pouring rain. I felt like I was inhaling water as I was running and it was blinding to run through - both because it was coming down hard but also because the pine trees soaked me as I ran through them. I was just behind Ross until #4, where we both paused briefly. I recognized where we were, partially from the map, and partially from just knowing the terrain, and took off for #4. Apparently Ross didn't trust me, as he spent another 2 minutes looking for it. I ran hard the rest of the way, and when Ross wasn't catching up to me I thought that maybe he somehow got in front of me. But I reached the end and he wasn't there, so I managed to hold him off. Helps that he's sick and a bit jet lagged :) Pushing really hard and legs felt much better than last week. I was tired, but didn't feel like I hit the wall. Gasping a bit for breath though...
Orienteering 23:56 [4] 4.5 km (5:19 / km)
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Running the sprint the second time backwards. Again Ross and I started together, but he was running a bit slower in the beginning than the first time. Of course, this is not to say I could keep up too well. Running behind him until I almost ran down the wrong trail going to #7 (backwards). I didn't go far, but had to climb back uphill and in that short short amount of time he was out of sight until I started running down the trail. It's amazing how a 15 second mistake, if even, can move someone out of sight. Caught back up to him by taking a better route to #5, and finished 2 seconds behind him. Considering I knew where I was going both time, it's not quite fair :) It was a good physical workout - good practice running at high speeds through terrain while having to do atleast minimal navigation. It was nice to have Ross there, as I certianly pushed harder and would not have wanted to go out a second time if he weren't there. It was cold and I was soaked after the first sprint.
trail run 9:00 [1]
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Jogging slowly back to the car for Ross. We were too wet and cold to wait at the finish for dad. During the second sprint it stopped raining and the sun almost came out, but it was too late. We were already soaked. Really glad I thought to bring dry clothes to change into. The warm weather from last week has disappeared, and it being replaced by more typical April weather.

Sunday Apr 27

Orienteering 50:00 [2]
shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw
Did the advanced line-o. Tried to take it easy since my legs are really tired, for reasons unknown. Walked up the hills, ran on the flat and downhill sections. Had to walk at times just to stay on the line, and was a bit off the line in the indistinct area on the other side of the pond. Talking to the others, they had some trouble there too. Since you could see so far in the woods it was enjoyable to run with my head up and pick off features as I ran by. Nice to be out in the woods, and the rain held off!
Orienteering 14:42 [3] 1.9 km (7:44 / km)
shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw
The late morning sprint. Started out and could feel that I had nothing in my after a few steps, so eased up for the whole course. Legs truly dead feeling. Navigation was fine, although I wanted to kick myself for checking a control that I KNEW wasn't mine, but was along my route. Made me stop for a few seconds and lose concentration. Really steep climb near the end that had the calves burning.
Finished and my entire legs were sore, from calves all the way up to my butt. What did I do to my legs?? Stretched for a long time afterwards and they felt a bit better, but still heavy and really tight. I've taken this weekend easy in an attempt to rest my legs (although from what I have no idea) but they are still tired. Going to train as normal next week and hope the feeling goes away. Undertraining and therefore tired? Overtraining and therefore tired? Neither makes a great deal of sense.

Saturday Apr 26

track workout 11:30 [4] 3 km (3:50 / km)
shoes: Asics 1130
Spent the weekend at the Northeast Junior Training Camp. It was lots of fun working with the juniors and everyone else. Dad lost his voice on Saturday :( so I had to do more of the talking than I expected. Woke up Saturday morning feeling very blah. I went to the track with the juniors where they were running a 1k or 3k test. Lots of them showed up! Decided to run the 3k to see what happened. Only warm up was one lap around the outdoor track before starting. Ran the first lap with the group and did the first 400 in 90 seconds. Decided that sounded good and decided to try to run 90 seconds every lap. Never having done a 3 k on roads, trails or a track, this seemed reasonable :) Had a bit of trouble staying at 90 for each lap and did the first mile in 6:10. Working hard, but not killing myself. Sped up a bit trying to catch the juniors in front of me (although never caught Amos who ran a 10:30!). Did 2400m in 9:19, 2800 in 10:50 (91 seconds) and then 39 for the last 200. Yeah, didn't take splits in the beginning. Not bad for no warm up and relaly tired legs this whole week.
I felt so much better after having done this - alive and ready to face the day. Running feels so good when you are done :)
Orienteering 25:29 [2] 4 km (6:22 / km)
shoes: Montrail
Ran the advanced control picking course. Standing around at the start was the worst because of the small bugs that like to fly around your head and into your ears and eyes. Easy speed and paying close attention to my compass. Messed up once when I ignored my compass and made a parallel error. It's a 1:5000 map that looks like a 1:10000 because of the amount of detail. It throws you off a bit because you can see so far. Kicked the juniors butts, but that also could be because one control was not there at first when they ran by... :)
Orienteering 45:00 [1]
shoes: Montrail
Easy run around in the woods with Alison and Susan. Some shadowing and relocation exercises. Found that it was easy to relocate when you weren't the one navigating. I would run to a feature, and they would follow without looking at the map, but they could look at their compass. No matter how hard I tried, they could relocate successfully every time! But then when they were the ones leading to the control, they would get lost and find it difficult to relocate. I think it has to do with having assumptions in your head when you are navigating about where you expect to be. When you're following you keep an open mind and don't have a plan that you are trying to execute. You can keep your head up and really look around with no assumptions about where you think you are. These assumptions are hard to let go of when you're lost and trying to relocate. Hopefully they learned something!
C • I did!!! 1
trail run 45 [5]
Clem, Corinne and I decided to put together an adult uphill map memory relay team to challenge the juniors. Corinne successfully drew the start in the correct place, but then Clem accidentally drew #12 thinking it was #1. I realized it when I went to draw #2. Corrinne went up to check what Clem did, but then memorized #2. So we had some communication problems in the beginning :) But we still managed to finish at the same time as the first junior team - they were working hard and were a challenge in to race against while running uphill!!

Friday Apr 25

Event: 2008 Northeast Junior Training Camp

road run 7:30 [1]
shoes: Asics 1130
Today was a threshold run day. I really wanted to run on trails, but didn't want to take the time to drive to any. Was going to run up Comm. Ave, but that wasn't too appealing either. Decided to run to Cold Spring and run around that trail loop. I figured since it was early afternoon there wouldn't be too many people and dogs to run over. So I ran down to where the trail begins in Waban.
trail run 20:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 1130
Threshold run around Cold Spring on the trails. Legs still heavy feeling, although better than Wednesday. HR monitor not working too well, but it felt like I was running around 180 the whole way. Had to come to a quick stop near the end as I was about the run over some dogs.
road run 13:00 [1]
shoes: Asics 1130
Running slowly back to my house.

Thursday Apr 24

road/trail run 21:45 [1]
shoes: Asics 1130
A slow easy run around Cold Spring Park to loosen up my legs. Felt ok... but was also moving very slowly.

Wednesday Apr 23

road run 50:30 [3] 6.0 mi (8:25 / mi)
shoes: Asics 1130
Joined Yvonne for our usual Wednesday run. I felt ok for the first mile, but then it got rough. The last 2 miles were really hard and if I had been with anyone else I would have just stopped and walked home. Felt like I had hit a wall and was trying to run through it. Good exercise in mental training, since I had to convince myself to keep going for another 20 minutes. I did slow down a lot though and our per mile time is much slower than usual. I'm really tired this week, not sure why. Pilates was a struggle yesterday too.
Orienteering 19:26 [3] 3.1 km (6:16 / km) +90m 5:28 / km
shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw
I picked up Hill in Watertown and we drove to the sprint at Menotomy Rocks in Arlington. It was a beautiful evening to be outside! Temperature was dropping to a reseaonable 75 or so. Last time I was here I had some real problems navigating, especially around a certain open area. This time I resolved to navigate cleanly, especially since I would probably be moving at a snails pace. It was a really pleasant sprint, since I was running at a comfortable speed and not getting lost :) Some minor hesitations in the field where it was again confusing.

Tuesday Apr 22

trail run 1:04:30 [4]
shoes: Montrail
Ran the skyline trail this morning by myself. It's school vacation! And I wanted to run in the morning so that I could get it over with :) The first skyline run of the season - better late than never. The time is decent for the first time. Quite tired legs and arms, really struggling in the first half. Halfway time was 28:40. Beautful day! And now I am in the library trying to catch up on school work...
lifting/strength (pilates) 51:00 [1]
Pilates with dad in the evening.

Monday Apr 21

road run 35:29 [3] 4.6 mi (7:43 / mi)
shoes: Asics 1130
A really nice run with Ross at 8:00 pm. The day was packed with fun so we didn't go earlier. I was tempted not to go, but when I asked Ross if he wanted to go for a run, he did! So that got me out the door. We had a really fun day - starting with going to watch the Boston marathon for a couple of hours. Beautiful weather, though probably a bit hot for the runners. Ross cheered so much for everyone that he was hoarse for a few hours after. Then we played some kubb and croquet in the nearby park and some Settlers at home. A great way to spend Patriots Day!

Warm up run ended suddenly when I saw Carl sprinting towards the finish. An 11 minute yellow leg!
Orienteering 39:59 [5] 5.3 km (7:33 / km) +280m 5:58 / km
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Third leg of the Killer Bunnies relay: Dad, Carl Underwood, me and Hill. I really enjoyed this race! It was lots of fun and very fast - wish I had more speed to truly enjoy it! I was doing well until the end of the first loop (before the field). I think I was getting tired and making some silly mistakes. I picked a good route to #11 but missed my turn up the reentrant. Then I ran out to the trail in a different spot than I expected on the way to #12, and then missed 12 in the green area. I'd imagine about 5 minutes of mistakes on 11, 12 and 13. 5-10 were lots of fun through well mapped and open terrain. The field running was fun and the second loop went well. John Goodwin, from the winning WCOC team, managed to gain time on me in the first loop, due more to my mistakes than running speed. An amazing venue. You could see running crossing the field in all sorts of directions.

Saturday Apr 19

Event: US Middle Distance and Relay Champs

trail run 10:00 [1]
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Warming up for the middle. I felt good, and it helped knowing that I had a good middle race two weeks ago in Ohio.
Orienteering 46:39 [4] 4.59 km (10:10 / km)
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
nothing like running over 10 min/k on a middle distance course. You can really tell that you are on your way to the top when this happens.

An almost comical disaster. Started out fine, but then made my first mistake on #3. I attacked off the hill, but then came off at an angle and was too far right of the control. I knew I was in the right area, but just couldn't figure it out. Went further right.... and then wandered back to exactly where I was standing before and could see the control. I think I was a bit scattered and so I ran straight to #4, which meant going over 2 hills. The climb was ok, but the last downhill was like climbing down a dirt cliff. #5 and #6 went well and #7 was a short leg for which I had a plan. But I misread a contour line and ended up too low on the hillside. Wandered for a long time, until I found the rock pile and managed to relocate. As I was leaving some man asked me where I was. Right, like I really want to help when you just ran into this area and I've been wandering around for 5 minutes. Go wander yourself. The rest of the race was clean and steady. I remembered my Golden Rule after #4, when I really wanted to just go home, which was never give up in orienteering. On a positive note, I didn't give up and tried to keep my head in the race. On a negative note, it was still a disaster :)

Still a long ways to go this season.
trail run 10:00 [1]
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
warming up for the sprint. Legs feeling a bit more tired than I expected.
Orienteering 15:10 [5] 2.6 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
A really fun and well designed sprint. My legs were struggling the whole way. I need to really begin working on some speed. Hill beat me on every split, so she and others were just running faster than I was. A pretty clean race. I didn't think I made any mistakes until I compared splits with Hill and lost 20 second going to 13. I started a bit to the right of the line, and then went too far left. My meandering route cost me more than I thought! Good to remember for next time. I need to make a plan even on these short sprint legs, because a lot of time can be lost! A speedy sprint that was fun to (attempt to) run!

All in all, a humbling weekend. Too many mistakes and not enough speed.

Thursday Apr 17

Orienteering 52:17 [1]
shoes: Montrail
Went to hang streamers for the courses I am setting for this Sunday. I wore shorts, because I figured I could run around all the thorns and stick to the trails because I was just going out for an easy run. Really bad idea. The thorns were not the problem. The blueberry bushes were horrible! Even walking slowly produced many scratches on my shins and was painful. This is why I don't wear shorts ever while orienteering. I can't take that much pain. So I walked whenever I was off trail. But I did run for the 52 minutes.

You think I would know better, having lived my whole life in New England.

Wednesday Apr 16

road run 20:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Run with Hill around Dedham while waiting for dad to get home.
trail run 32:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
We went to Lars Anderson Park to run hills. New workout. We ran around the park for about 10 minutes before the hills and thought it would be a nice place to make a sprint map of. Not too big though. Then it took about 1:20 to run down the hill each time, and then 10 minutes cool down.

Event: 30th Annual Billygoat Run

Orienteering 2:04:00 [4] 13 km (9:32 / km) +500m 8:00 / km
shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw
The Billygoat. Ran with Hill, as planned. :) We have fun running together, although sometimes it's tough when we both trying to lead and are describing routes to eachother. I think running with us might be amusing for others as we talk constantly and not always about orienteering. But that's why the Billygoat is fun. We had a good pack for pretty much the whole course. We lost most of them after 12 (because some skipped 13 and some ran too fast down the trail), but then we got lost on #16 and everyone caught right back up. We skipped #19, which in retrospect was not the best idea. We should have skipped #18. Others wanted to skip #18 but since we were so intent on skipping 19 they came along too. After punching #20 I began to push harder to try to lose everyone at the end. I punched 21 right ahead of Hill and then ran as hard as I could towards the large trail leading to the last control. I ended up going through a lot of junk, but I think everyone else did too. A tiring race - more tiring that I was expecting. I think when running with the pack I was moving faster than if it had just been Hill and I alone. Left quad was sore, but feels fine now, so hopefully no damage done :) Felt much much longer than the 13k last weekend. And I won cheesecake - yum!

Saturday Apr 12

road/trail run 32:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Run with Hill and Ross around Newton. I wasn't going to go, even though both Hill and Ross were going out for a short run. What convinced me was the beautiful weather! I stepped outside to help Ross with the groceries and realized how beautiful it was. Then I just couldn't justify staying inside to finish my homework. So now it's Sunday night after the Billygoat and I'm trying to write a paper.

Orienteering 1:22:00 [3] 8 km (10:15 / km)
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Running the course set for a local meet a couple of weekends ago at Rocky Woods. Some trouble in the beginning, missing the first 3 or so controls. Then really missing #6 (still not sure what I did even after going back when I was done) but then settled into it. Hill, Dad and I went out and although we started at the same time we became separated in the beginning. The woods were very thick and the running speed was slow. The rain held off.

Thursday Apr 10

road/trail run 43:50 [2] 4.7 mi (9:20 / mi)
shoes: Asics 1130
Running around Newton with Hill on this beautiful day! It's about 70 and sunny outside. Legs were tired and felt a bit dehydrated (although I drink an incredible amount of water these days).
Note
Woohoo! I have a job offer for next year! Starting in September I will be a second grade teacher in the Needham Public Schools (unless something goes horribly wrong between now and then... like me telling them I will be gone all summer...). It's not 4th grade, which I was really hoping for, but I have lots of experience in 2nd grade and I know that I love the school that I will be working in. Yay!..... now to graduate from grad school.....
C • congratulations 10

Wednesday Apr 9

road run 43:53 [2] 5.78 mi (7:35 / mi)
shoes: Asics 1130
A run around Newton this time with my high school running buddy. Legs tired from yesterday and this weekend. Good pace. I could talk and tell stories, but was a bit short on breath and it was better when she was telling a story and I could just listen :)

Tuesday Apr 8

road run 45:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Running over to the Wilson Mountain trail loop with Hill. I have a cold :( My flight out of Columbus on Sunday was delayed an hour, which meant that I was going to miss my connection in New York. The man working at the delta terminal was very nice, although stressed out, and found me a seat on a United Flight that went through Charlotte, NC. Unfortunately, that didn't leave Columbus until 7:50 and got into Boston at 12:25 am (as opposed to my scheduled 9 pm arrival time). Luckily, I met Cristina, Eric and Viktoria outside of security as they were arriving for their flights, and hung around with them until my flight left. We were delayed leaving Charlotte though, and I didn't get home until 2 am. So now I am sleepy and sniffly.
trail run 28:00 [4]
shoes: Asics 1130
Ran two loops of the Wilson Mountain trail with Hill., HR monitor not working at all reliably. We were running a bit faster than threshold is my guess, especially on the second loop. Times were 13:51 and 13:45.

Sunday Apr 6

road run 10:00 [2]
warm up. I owe Cristina for driving me for my early start time :)
Orienteering 1:57:40 [4] 13.2 km (8:55 / km)
Ultra-long at the Pig. I was nervous about the distance, but once I started it was fine. I finished and felt like I could keep on going for quite awhile, although my legs had no speed. Therefore I kept up a steady but fairly easy pace the whole way. The running (and swimming) was slow - muddy trails, marshy and dense light green, steep reentrant and deep streams. The trails were nice because you didn't have to navigate, but they were probably slower than running in the woods. I lost about a minute each longer leg to Annabel. We took very different routes to many of the controls, but even when we went similar ways I still lost time. I hesitated, bounced around, and stopped to double check things on my map. I need to work on being more fluid as I run the longer legs. I made a route choice error to #15 (when I went for a cold, cold swim) and lost about 2 minutes. I saw the "best" route, but thought it was too far out of the way. I had been going around everything and I was worried that it was the wrong decision. It wasn't. Then I messed up #18, which was basically a trail run. I made the same mistake lots of others did by runnig up the paved trail. Only it took me awhile to realize it. When I cut back down to the stream, I didn't realize that there were two streams. So I followed the wrong one into the thicket, figured it out, but still came out above the control in the campground. Lost about 3 minutes there. I was running with blue runners from 15, to 16, to 17 and I though they were running the last loop with me. When they headed off 90 degrees in the "wrong" direction from 17 I realized they were going to a different control, but I think it still threw me. Plus, I was a bit shaken by the swim. I'm not a strong swimmer, and I didn't expect the water to go over my head. A bit of panic set in and I let it distract me in the last loop. I think the course was really well set up, with lots of route choice that kept you on your toes and helped the 2 hours fly by! I'm reminded that I need to work on my orienteering "flow" - whatever that really is and how you work on it, I'm not sure...

I had a wonderful weekend and I'm thrilled that I had the opportunity to race! Thanks!!

The morning sprint at Miami University. A really fun race :) Lots of good route choice around the campus. I made one ~30 second mistake leaving #1. I think I thought that I had to run along 3 sides of the building, but I didn't count the first side as I ran out. Or something. I took 3 left turns, instead of 2. As soon as I turned and my compass didn't match up I stopped, but it took me a bit of standing to really figure out what I did. Legs were moving just about as fast as they could, but it felt slow. Legs need more speed work.

The second sprint of the day. I hesitated going to #2, as the fields didn't look like I expected and then I ran past the trail I wanted. I turned around and went back to find it. I'm glad I did, since those who didn't said they were hesitant when they entered the woods. I chose the slower route to #6, going down and then climbing back up again. Plus, the field that I ran through wasn't quite mapped correctly - an extra stream and broken ground. But it wasn't the best route regardless of that. Mike Smith ran by me going to #6 and I did my best to keep up with him, but kept on losing ground.

Flying Pig WRE. A fun race - it felt more like a sprint than a middle. I ran well and planned ahead for the most part. I messed up the first real difficult control in the woods, #10. I was very careful to count reentrants but then I missed when I hit the big reentrant. I turned right instead of left and found #11. I didn't realize it was mine, but when I was running out of it and reloacting, I realized it was. That helped :) But I lost about 2 minutes there. Otherwise a pretty clean race.

In my defense I just decided to go to the Pig a couple of days ago - but I did not realize it was so long on Sunday! Ah! Well, it will be good Billygoat training.
road run 50:00 [2]

warm up and down with Hill. A longer warmup as I knew I wouldn't want to run longer after the intervals. I felt very sluggish during the warmup and slightly lightheaded, since I didn't drink enough water yet. So we cut the warmup a bit short.
road run 12:00 [4]
shoes: Asics 1130
4 x 3 minutes with 2 minutes of jogging between. We were running up Comm. Ave and all of the intervals had a bit of uphill, with the last one being all uphill. Felt good to run fast and nice to have Hill running with me. Hill yelled at me after the third interval for starting too fast. But there were guys who were about to pass us and we had to run away from them :)
