| Orienteering 20:00 [2] | ||
| Sprint model. Took it very easy today. | ||
Sunday Jul 30 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:56 [5] | ||
| So another long quali come and gone... I feel that this was a better race than last year, although I am further away from qualifying for the final. After I finished Hill asked me how many minutes of mistakes I made and I said around 4. After looking at results that would have put me nicely into the final. I made many bobbles on 2, 4, 5, and 6. On 5 I was simply confused by the area and thought I hit the swamp when it was really just a depression, but 2, 4, and 6 could have been better if I had been more focused. On 2 I was trying to read ahead and I sort of lost contact with what I was doing. I thought I was one hill further than I really was. It wasn't that much of a problem as I simply kept on going and eventually figured out where I was and came up the reentrant from the bottom. On 4 I was being brain dead and as I ran down the top of the hill I didn't notice the trail and turned left when I should have turned right, thinking I was in a different reentrant. The trail should have given it away. Then on 6 I got off the route I meant to take and so only knew approximately where I was. I stopped much too short and checked the wrong reentrant before continuing on. Short but silly mistakes. After 6 I felt like I was doing much better and although some route choices could have been improved the control was always where I expected it. The worst part after 6 was getting stuck in some nasty green right below 13 where I couldn't physically get up the hill....
Sure, I'm disappointed. Again so close but so far and another whole year to train and prepare and try again. But the sprint is in two days and I'm aiming for the A final.
Saturday Jul 29 | ||
| road/trail run 19:00 [1] | ||
| a short run around where we are staying to wake up after my nap. | ||
Friday Jul 28 | ||
| Event: WOC 2006 | ||
| Orienteering 33:00 [2] | ||
| This was the long distance model day. Ran some controls alone, and then met up with Sandra and we did some route choices. | ||
Thursday Jul 27 | ||
| Orienteering 50:00 [3] | ||
| ok, so I just copied Sandra's entry for this one. I can't remember running on this day.... | ||
Wednesday Jul 26 | ||
| Orienteering 38:00 [3] | ||
| So I have missed a few entries, but I will put in today. Boris designed a course for Sanrda and I to run in typical long terrain. We both only ran 1-6 and then we went over to the butterfly loop to j´job around those controls as well. The woods are beautiful - so open! Today was a bit more hilly, but the weather is perfect. We finsihed up on the beach and went swimming. | ||
| Orienteering 45:00 [2] | ||
| This was the time spent running around the butterfly loops and running to and from the start and finish with Sandra. | ||
Tuesday Jul 25 | ||
| Orienteering 45:00 [3] | ||
| sprint training in the Botanical Gradens :) Ran pretty hard for the course, and then spent some time picking up streamers with the girls. | ||
Monday Jul 24 | ||
| Orienteering 1:47:00 [3] | ||
| I think it wasthe course Boris designed on the map next to our hostel. There was an optional loop that I wasn't going to do, but then Hill caught up to me and we decided to do 2 controls in the loop in opposite driections. But then I hacked through some gross woods and when I finally came out the other side, the woods were just too nice to just run two controls in and then move on. So I ran them all :) Such beautiful woods! Time includes the running to and from the hostel (30 minutes). | ||
Sunday Jul 23 | ||
| Orienteering 58:07 [3] | ||
| This was my first day in the Danish woods - and I LOVED them!! I did a control picking exercise with Hill, Zan and Brent. We all hung four controls and then visited the others, making a loop. The loop was 3.75k and then we spent awhile running to and from that area. | ||
| Orienteering 30:30 [4] | ||
| The afternoon training. about 7 minutes of warm up and then Hill, Zan and I ran butterfly loops. 2.9k in 23'28". It was beautiful running and lots of fun. | ||
Saturday Jul 22 | ||
| road/trail run 40:28 [2] | ||
| Hill, Zan and I ran around Silkeborg to explore the town. We found a ool bridge that led over to some nice trails. It's a beautiful town!! | ||
Thursday Jul 20 | ||
| Orienteering 21:45 [4] 2.9 km (7:30 / km) | ||
| Ok, so I didn't run the 6.5 min/k that I hope to run at WOC, but there is still time for improvement. Dad chose this place to train because it has lots of trails, similar to WOC sprint, but then we realized that the maps we have don't have the trails on them! It was good training nonetheless. | ||
| Orienteering 14:43 [4] 2.5 km (5:53 / km) | ||
| ok, so I guessed at the distance, but this is the second sprint that I ran. I also think that I went to the wrong boulder at the end, but then I ran by the right one on the way to the finish :) No big mistakes. | ||
| road run 40:00 [2] | ||
| running to the track. I am a doof, and I fell while running on the trail to the track. I now have a dark purple bruise on my side and I couldn't sleep on my right side last night :( | ||
| C • Definitely not the worst pre-W... 1 | ||
| track workout 20:00 [3] | ||
| ran 6 800s with 30 seconds rest. Running while looking at a long quali course. Times were 3:24, 3:20, 3:20, 3:21, 3:17, 3:17. Aiming for 3:20, threshold pace.
Man, am I tired. | ||
Wednesday Jul 19 | ||
| Orienteering 1:15:00 [3] | ||
| Orienteering course in the Blue Hills with Hill and dad. Hill and I traded off the map every leg. We did better than usual.... | ||
| C • How was the filming? 3 | ||
Tuesday Jul 18 | ||
| road/trail run 48:00 [2] | ||
| Just another easy run in the heat. By myself, with only a map of Denmark to entertain me, running around Newton. | ||
Monday Jul 17 | ||
| road run 42:00 [2] | ||
| just an easy run around Dedham with dad. We ran over to Wilson Mountain to see what the filming had been about. It was "Design Squad" and they built two bridges across the swamp. Of course, the bridges didn't go anywhere. Now someone has to make some new trails too :) | ||
Sunday Jul 16 | ||
| road biking 3:07:00 [3] | ||
| a long bike ride with dad, Hill and mom. Dad and Hill were faster, and so they would have to wait for mom and I every once in a while. We were going to ride a 42 mile loop, but then Hill and dad saw markings for a 50 mile route and decided that would be a better idea. But then we lost the route when we tried to go get water. After stopping at Lookout Farm to eat lunch, we eventually did 45 miles.
It is really too hot to move here. Biking is the only way to stay cool. But after this week of training, I'm beat.
Saturday Jul 15 | ||
| road run 40:00 [2] | ||
| running to and from the track with Hill. They took away the bathrooms at the track! How sad :( | ||
| track workout 21:00 [5] | ||
| The nice thing about this workout is that it was cloudy almost the whole time. Had we done it yesterday it would have been much hotter. We ran 2x1200 and 8x400. The 2 1200s were ok - times are 4:31 and 4:31. Then the first 5 400s were 82, 82, 82, 82, 83. And then I pretty much hit the wall, which relaly hasn't ever happened like this to me before. My legs were so tired I just could barely get around the track. I could get through 200 meters ok, but then it was a major struggle to the end. Last 3 400s were 89, 85, 87. I have never had my legs feel so tired that I actually couldn't keep up my usual 400 pace. They just could not go anymore. | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| did a compass exercise in the afternoon in the Blue Hills with Dad and Hill. Hill and I had a blank sheet of paper, with only the controls circles drawn on and a clue sheet. We took a bearing and pace counted to each control. It sounds boring, and atypical to orienteering, but it really helped me feel confident in my compass skills. Most of the time I was within sight of the control feature, and other times I was actually at the control feature. Occasionally, I missed more, but I was amazed at how close I could come just using my compass and pacing.
At the end Hill and I lost dad because he had a different dot knoll circled than us. We were shouting for him, heard crashing through the woods, and a deer appeared. He hung around as we called for dad and then would run a little ways off, look back, run a little more. Then at one point he sneezed. It was really cute :) But it looked like he wanted us to follow him. I think he was intrigued by our shouting. And really, it would just be silly to ignore this deer who obvioulsy is asking us to follow him. So we followed him. He would run ahead until just out of sight and wait for us. When we got closer he would run a bit further. Eventually we started to feel silly and told the deer we were leaving, because he took us right past our last control location and dad wasn't there. We went to the trail and starting running down it when we finally heard dad calling our names.
Friday Jul 14 | ||
| trail run 40:00 [2] | ||
| running around in the morning putting out more controls, again chasing after my kids out on the trails and then picking up streamers. | ||
| road/trail run 59:00 [2] | ||
| did a long run with Hill around town. Legs are feeling quite tired - maybe this was a hard week? We were thinking about doing a track workout, but it was way to warm at 4:00 when we went running, so the track workout is postponed for tomorrow morning. | ||
Thursday Jul 13 | ||
| road run 12:00 [2] | ||
| running to and from Stoney Lea Rd. | ||
| road run 15:00 [4] | ||
| ok, so today wasn't a long day as I had to pick up new o shoes and meet friends for dinner, but I feel like it was quality. Ran around Stoney Lea circle for 15 minutes with the HR monitor, aiming for T pace, which is between 170 and 175. I would say that I ran closer to 170 today, and even a bit under it times. My legs were tired. They have been tired all week, although I can't really figure out why since I took Saturday and Monday completely off.... and now I have this weird tight area in my left leg... I'm falling apart :) | ||
| trail run 45:00 [2] | ||
| I forgot to add my time that I spent running around on trails setting up controls, chasing after my 9 and 10 year old orienteers and taking down the controls. | ||
Wednesday Jul 12 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] | ||
| ran an old course in the Blue Hills. I have done it a few times before, but even so I don't think I went to two of the correct control locations... of well :) At least Hill and I were running pretty fast. | ||
Tuesday Jul 11 | ||
| road run 15:00 [2] | ||
| warm up with dad and Hill. | ||
| Orienteering 39:00 [4] | ||
| ran one and a bit sprints at Franklin Park. From the tiny piece of map online that shows the sprint map for WOC we think Franklin Park is similar... we'll see! Ran one course that dad made up and Hill and I both had a lot of problems on it. I think a feature circled wasn't there, and the mapping of the boulders was throwing me off. The second half of the sprint went better, but I think I did about 1.5K in 23 minutes.... of yeah, that'll get me into A finals for sure. Then we ran part of an old course backwards and the beginning part of the new sprint backwards. | ||
| road biking 15:00 [3] | ||
| Hill, dad and I started out on a bike ride and got about 3 miles before I got a flat. We tried to patch it, but it was still leaking and the time was getting late, so Hill and dad went back to get the car while I hung out on the side of the road. | ||
Monday Jul 10 | ||
| Note | ||
| I had other things to do today, and so I didn't go running. Such is life, although I feel like I have been slacking on running lately. I did do a lot of armchair-o. I have cut up two WOC long quali maps into 2" by 2" squares and today I played Memory (you know, flip cards over and see if they match and remember where they are) with them, and put them together like a puzzle. Then I've drawn a half dozen long courses out on maps, and I've gone through the course picking attackpoints and route choices. We'll see how this pays off.... | ||
Sunday Jul 9 | ||
| trail run 1:12:42 [4] | ||
| Well, today was the Skyline Trail Race. I was 8th overall (of about 60) and Hill was *right* behind me! She is more aggressive in the middle of the race - anyone she sees in front of her she has to pass. And so there I was running after her. But then I was so excited when we go to the top of the last hill and we only had the flat and then the downhill ski slope to run that I took off... running as hard as I could to actually stay ahead of Hill. Hill finished 12 seconds behind me. Me and Hill set a new woman's course records, since the old one was 85 minutes. The winner ran over 60 minutes, so we weren't too far behind! Saw a few other brave attackpointers there :) | ||
| C • Nice run today! 1 | ||
Friday Jul 7 | ||
| trail run 23:00 [2] | ||
| running to and from the start from the car. The first time, since we were running with a map that had no trails, I took a wrong turn on the way to the start and then on the way back Hill and I stopped by 11 because I didn't think Hill had gone to the right boulder. | ||
| Orienteering 34:50 [4] | ||
| Running an old "sprint" course at Mt. Misery, but this map doesn't have any of the trails or stonewalls marked on it. Dad and I ran it much earlier this year. It's a bit shorter than 5k, since we couldn't start at the actual start because the fields are cultivated. Hill and I ran hard, trading off the map every control and looking ahead at our next leg so we could flow in and out of the controls. | ||
| C • mt misery? 2 | ||
Thursday Jul 6 | ||
| Orienteering 1:05:00 [3] | ||
| ran around an old course at High Rock. Did alright, recovered well when I had to and am working on picking simple attackpoints with easy navigation to the controls. | ||
Wednesday Jul 5 | ||
| road biking 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| Went biking with dad to go grocery shopping. Almost didn't have enough room on the bikes to bring all the food back! | ||
Tuesday Jul 4 | ||
| trail run 1:20:00 [4] | ||
| Hill, dad and I ran the longer skyline trail run. The Skyline Trail Race is on Sunday so we ran the course one last time before racing it. I don't think I could have run much faster then I did today, although it wasn't my best time and Hill beat me by a minute. Guess we all know who is faster and stronger! I was breathing fine, but my legs were tired. It was hot and humid and I was really thirsty at the end. I was sweating as much as I was in Japan - to give you an idea of how humid it was! | ||
Monday Jul 3 | ||
| road biking 2:00:00 [3] | ||
| went on a long road bike with dad. After about 18 miles we stopped at my favorite place to get gelato :) yum yum.
I have had ice cream atleast once a day for the past week. Sometimes it's dinner, sometimes lunch, sometimes dessert, sometimes all three :) But my weight is at a new low - what I was in high school, so therefore I think eating ice cream is good for your training.
| C • ice cream 2 | ||
Sunday Jul 2 | ||
| Orienteering 30:06 [3] | ||
| the long sprint put on by WCOC at Charlie and Rhonda DeWeese's house. Really quite thick in paces and a few bobbles led to a slow per k time. | ||
| Orienteering 19:01 [3] | ||
| the second sprint I ran, and the shorter of the 2. Did better navigationally on this one. Only messed up #5, where I caught Hill. Then I took a bad route to #6 and she pulled away and finished before me, although I got her overall :) | ||
Sprint 1 - Short - Splits
Sprint 2 - Long - Splits | ||
Saturday Jul 1 | ||
| trail run 1:52:00 [4] | ||
| Ran a longer version of the skyline trail run today. So now there are 3 different skyline trail runs, all very hilly and rocky and tiring. The one I always did is now simply the long skyline trail run (takes about 60-65 minutes). The one that is the same as the skyline trail race (which Hill and I are running in next weekend) is the longer skyline trail run (takes about 80 minutes), and the one we did today is the longest skyline trail run. None are short. | ||
| Note | ||
| So this past June I trained more than I ever have (as recorded by attackpoint). I trained 7 more minutes than I did this past March. Last year my June total was also high when compared to the rest of the year( even though there are about 10 missing days where I have no training and I can't figure out if I didn't log or didn't train. I think I just didn't log.. did I go somewhere??) I think it's because I've finished team trials and now I am building up for my next race - WOC.
June 2006: 32 hours 17 minutes June 2005: 20 hours 51 minutes June 2006 (June 2005) Orienteering: 10.5 hrs (10.25hrs) Interesting, these are very similar. Running: 17hrs (8 hrs) Other: 5.5 hrs (3 hrs) This is biking, lifting, tennis and rowing.
