Thursday Aug 31

trail run 1:39:00 [2]
went on a long run with dad in the blue hills. Back to the rocky trails and horse flies.

How come, late at night, my attackpoint date is off? Can I fix that? It thinks it's Spetember already and it most certainly is not.
C • Attackpoint Time... 4

Wednesday Aug 30

road/trail run 1:03:00 [3]
Another run around Newton. I did one of my loops that I really like, partly because the first 9 minutes are a slight downhill so you feel really good starting. I was also listening to my new iPod shuffle, which is new for me, since I never listen to music while I'm running. It was nice having a beat to run to, although the ear pieces kept on falling out :(

Note
Yay! I have added all my spilts from out west and updated my log :) Finally....

lifting/strength 10:00 [2]
did some more crunches and leg lifts. A bit sore from yesterday :) It was just too rainy outside.

Monday Aug 28

road/trail run 1:06:00 [3]
ran around Newton again with Ross. We ran over to Hammond Pond and ran around on the trails for a bit.
Note
I did 20 minutes of pilates today with my roommate Emily :) Working the power house.

Sunday Aug 27

road run 1:10:00 [2]
The logging begins again! I have finally returned, sadly, from all my summer vacations. I plan on logging all past entries... but I may not have written them all down, so we will see :)

Today I ran around Newton with Ross. I planned on running longer, but Ross's ankle started to hurt and it began to rain.

Friday Aug 25

road biking 2:00:00 [2]
Biked the rail trail down on the Cape again. Supposed to be a shorter ride, but again did 30 miles :) Stopped for ice cream on the way back. Dad and I shared a banana split :) yum yum.

Thursday Aug 24

road biking 2:00:00 [2]
30 miles on the rail trail down on Cape Cod. Hill, Dad, Mom, Ross and I biked to the beach, where we met others in the family and went boogie boarding. Then we biked back to the car.

Wednesday Aug 23

road/trail run 1:01:00 [3]
Ran with Hill and Ross from the beach down in Cape Cod. We took a wrong turn (running from map memory) and so took a fire road that was going the right direction. Then that wasn't really working, so we just cut directly through the woods towards the shore. I mean, how lost can you really get on the cape? You can always just run to the shore.

Sunday Aug 20

Orienteering 1:20:49 [4]
Second day of the US champs. I don't want to talk about it.

Red Day 2 - Splits

Saturday Aug 19

Orienteering 1:00:13 [4]
First Day of US Champs. Had a pretty good race. Missed #10 by a bit, hitting the reentrant beyond it, and on 6 and 8 I stopped too early. Then going to the finish I ran the wrong way out of the last control because there were streamers going that way! But they were for the white course and it was streamered to the last control. Lost 1 minute on Hill just running to the finish... oh well, learned my lesson!

Red - Splits

Thursday Aug 17

Orienteering 51:07 [4]
Middle distance A meet out on Wyoming. Wasn't running too cleanly - I think I spiked 4 out of the 16 controls.... Got really lost on the second to last control by reading the green wrong and not looking at my compass. A discouraging race.

Red Day 3 - Splits

Wednesday Aug 16

Orienteering 58:01 [5]
This felt like the longest and hardest race I ran out West. I was so brain dead in the last loop on top of the hill that I am surprised I even made it around.

Crystal Relay Leg 4 - Splits

Tuesday Aug 15

Orienteering 23:29 [5]
Again, Ross caught me during the sprint. But this time he made a mistake after catching me and I managed to just beat him into the finish chute :)

US Team Sprint - Splits

Monday Aug 14

Orienteering 59:45 [3]
I ran the Green night-o. Got horribly lost on number one and came back out to the field by the start to relocate and try again. Went better after that, but never great. I couldn't see!

Green Night-O - Splits

Sunday Aug 13

Orienteering 58:36 [4]
Day 2 of the Western Champs. Not as clean as day 1 - I felt like I was wandering a lot during my route choices and the rocky area was difficult.

Red 2 - Splits

Saturday Aug 12

Orienteering 56:48 [4]
Day 1 of the Western Champs. Good race.

Red 1 - Splits

Friday Aug 11

Orienteering 17:10 [4]
The prologue. A pretty good race, except for #3, where I was confused and Ross caught me.
Orienteering 41:50 [4]
The Chase. A hard run. I lost most of the pack that caught me at the spectator control, and then ran pretty hard with Andy and someone else for the rest of the race.

Prologue - Splits

Chase - Splits

Thursday Aug 10

Orienteering 44:43 [3]
The Stampede. Lots of run running the loops, and then ran the last loop mostly with Hill, until she passed me going up the last hill.

Stampede - Splits

Wednesday Aug 9

Orienteering 19:11 [4]
First Opening Day sprint of the 100 day. Throat really sore, fron being slightly sick and the dry air. Breathing was hard - a difficult run!

Opening Sprint - Splits

Saturday Aug 5

Orienteering 43:40 [5]
The 1st leg of the relay. A really amazing race. I almost botched number 1 badly, not really knowing where I was and hitting the wrong control first. I paniced for a moment, but then wandered further into the green to find mine. I was running with a great group and really moving. And then I made a huge mistake, with about 5 others, on the 3rd to alst control. We all read the reentrants wrong and ended up on the wrong nose. It took us forever to relocate, I think because no one was really willing to go off and leave the group. New Zealand did in fact leave the group to find control, and it's disappointing now to see what place I could have finished in! eventually, while bailing out, I saw the correct spur and finished before others in my lost group, but the damage was done and about 4 teams passed me while I was wandering around. Still, a good race and an awesome relay finish!!

Friday Aug 4

Orienteering 24:00 [2]
I ran part of a specator course.

Thursday Aug 3

Orienteering 50:00 [2]
I think I ran a spectator race today.

Tuesday Aug 1

Orienteering 35:00 [5]
For now, I'll log these sprints together with approx. time. Both the quali and final were very fun to run! They were so unique with the fences and amusement park and track! In the qualis there were fences everywhere and you really had to read ahead to make sure you didn't get caught behind a fence. I got caught by the fences on the way to 1, because I thought there was an opening on the side, and there wasn't. There was an underpass, but I didn't see it on the map. So although I was almost standing at the underpass, I ran all the way back around to the gate. And then we were running controls around a cycling track. Hanny caught me going to 2, and then after 4 I left the track through the underpass and she left through the gate. I saw her briefly in the amusement park, but I couldn't navigate fast enough. It was just insane in the amusement park. The controls were very close together and there was so much detail. So much stuff to run around. It went pretty well. I didn't take one opening that I could have and I almost ran by another one of my controls. Then leaving the park you had to find a gate out, which took a bit for me to find and decide and then I didn't look at my compass when I was leaving and I went about 90 degress the wrong way. I corrected it when I hit the main road and it doesn't look like I actually lost too much time there. I cut through the woods in a desperate attempt to make up some lost time. But then I was feeling so disappointed about my race coming into the second to last control. And then I heard everyone cheering soooo loud!!! It was so amazing. I could hear my name being shouted clear as day. I could tell that atleast they thought I was running well. So I picked up the pace, and then I could hear the announcer talking about me, so I ran even harder :) Maybe the race could be saved after all... It was very scary waiting after I finished to see if I would make it into the final... and then just making it! I just had such a difficult race in so many ways I thought for sure I was out of it. It was a unique course, and I think all the American runners handled it really well. It was easy to lose lots of time by taking one wrong turn, but I am proud of North America!

Then the final. I wasn't that nervous, since all I really wanted to do this WOC was make it to the finals! And then I also had a goal of top 30 finish... I went out pretty easy, finding 1 without a problem. 2 was tricky and I was a bit shaky and I came into the control from the back. Then 3-6 were easy and I planned my route to 7. But I didn't plan quite well enough and halfway across the horse track I realized I couldn't go through somewhere I had thought. So I changed course, taking a hard right in the field and almost not getting down the steep earth bank on the side. I didn't notice that the huge billboards on the side of the track were what was marked as uncrossable fneces on my map. I then caught up to the girl from China who started in front of me, and we ran the rest of it together. Coming into the spectator control I could again hear everyone cheering for me and it made me smile while I was running :) They were so loud and I could clearly hear "Go Sam!!" It went fine after that until the second to last control, where I saw my control, but thought it was on the bridge and mine was just beyond on a tree. But I went beyond it and hit a trail junction. I had lost the Chinese girl 2 controls earlier, but then she came running up behind me on my mistake. We both turned around and went back to the one on the bridge, which really was mine and hanging on a tree. I was then running as hard as I could to try and beat her to the final control... and I wasn't gaining on her! She might have punched just ahead of me but I punched faster and gave it my all in the chute.

I really couldn't be much happier about my final run. I probably made about 20-30 seconds of mistakes - beyond that I would of had to map read and run faster than I was confortable doing. And when I finished I even got to do an interview with the announcer on the big screen :)
C • Congrats! 6
