Tuesday Oct 31 | ||
| road/trail run 1:04:00 [2] | ||
| ran around in Newton on one of my favorite loops with dad. Happy Halloween! I had class tonight and so couldn't hand out candy. Of course, no trick-or-treaters came to my house this year, so maybe I didn't miss out on much :( | ||
Friday Oct 27 | ||
| trail run 1:36:00 [3] | ||
| a long trail run with dad in the blue hills. I felt pretty tired in the beginning but then felt better.
I'm slowly, or maybe quickly, losing the motivation to run every day since I have nothing to really be looking forward to. There's the Traverse and then.... team trials? They are so far away though....
| C • a midwinter's challenge 9 | ||
Thursday Oct 26 | ||
| Orienteering 35:00 [3] | ||
| running around the blue hills with dad and doing part of last years traverse.
| ||
| C • Traverse 2 | ||
Tuesday Oct 24 | ||
| rowing machine 10:00 [2] | ||
| a little rowing before running | ||
| road run 35:00 [2] | ||
| road run over to wilson mountain and back with dad. | ||
| trail run 15:00 [3] | ||
| ran the trail loop in Wilson Mountain. I didn't have a watch or my HR monitor so I was running "kind of fast." Dad stopped his watch by accident in the middle so I only know approx. how long it took me. Felt good to stretch the legs and I think my ankle does a bit better in sneakers rather than o-shoes on trails. Although I also think my ankle is about to amputate itself to get away from me. | ||
Sunday Oct 22 | ||
| Note | ||
| Went to Head of the Charles to cheer on Hill in the lightweight Marist 8-boat. | ||
| C • some of my friends were racing... 1 | ||
Saturday Oct 21 | ||
| Orienteering 1:42:00 [3] | ||
| a 9k course at Hale. I took it slow, my ankle not happy when I moved it too much up and down or side to side. (yeah, none of that in orienteering). The pain didn't really affect my running, in the sense that it didn't hurt when I was running normally, but the pain was acute enough when I bent it to make me walk for awhile. The trails were almost the worst because they were rockier than the woods. but the woods were filled with blueberry bushes. I made no big mistakes, but missed 6 by a bit and ran by 13 expecting to see the feature from the trail. Took it easy though and got my butt kicked by Ross, who claimed he was taking it easy. | ||
Friday Oct 20 | ||
| road run 40:00 [2] | ||
| road run with dad around Dedham in the rain. | ||
Thursday Oct 19 | ||
| road run 1:04:00 [3] | ||
| went running with Ross and took him to Hemlock Gorge and showed him around there. A nice area with not many trails, but a break from teh roads and cool cliffs. | ||
| Note | ||
| So, today was the first run since the highlander. Again with classes on Monday and Wednesday and the time I normally run on Tuesday being consumed by work. And waking up early to go running just isn't appealing when I'm not getting enough sleep as it is... but I think I'm back on track and things shouldn't be so hetic for a while... we'll see though :) | ||
Sunday Oct 15 | ||
| Orienteering 4:00:00 [3] | ||
| The Highlander. I don't know what my exact time was because I forgot to stop my watch, but it was just under 4 hours. I got off to a rough start as I messed up 3, but then steadily moved along, catching Ross, and then losing him, Caught Greg Balter at the end and finished right behind him, in 12th place overall. Lower place than last year, but I didn't make the disaster mistake that I did last year. I think the competition was just faster! Very tired, but not really due to the race. More due to major lack of sleep, long car rides and the thought of another week with no sleep or running (more papers and lesson planning....) sigh, and I though grad school was a good idea..... | ||
| C • Happy birthday! 9 | ||
Thursday Oct 12 | ||
| road run 1:10:00 [2] | ||
| just went for a run with my ipod around Newton. Managed to keep the earpeices in my ear and no one/no thing snuck up behind me. That is just my worst fear when running with music. I feel like something is running behind me and I don't know it becasue I can't hear them.
Felt good to stretch my legs. I pulled my foot sideways last night to look at something on the bottom of my foot, having forgotten about my ankle. Wrentched it hard, and it was sore for the rest of the evening. Good going me.
| C • I haven't run with my iPod yet... 9 | ||
Wednesday Oct 11 | ||
| Note | ||
| So I wasn't able to run Wednesday or Thursday of last week, Wednesday becasue of class and Thursday because we left to drive to NAs. Then I didn't run on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday this week, Monday and Tuesday because I had a paper I had to write (due Wednesday, 23 pages... yeah, so I procrastinated for about a month....) and Wednesday because of class.
Sigh. I also found out that I can't go to the meet in NJ because I have to take more sections of the MA teachers test. Stupid work interfering with my life (orienteering being my prefered life). Sigh again. Season is basically over, ending on some not so great notes at North Americans. Still have the Highlander and Traverse to go.

| Note | ||
| I'm turning 24 in a week :) | ||
Sunday Oct 8 | ||
| Orienteering 1:16:05 [5] | ||
| I went over yesterdays course and realized I needed to take it slow and really plan out the technical legs. On the long course I did quite wlel on most of the short technical legs. My problems were executing my long legs! I had good plans, but I messed up when I went to execute them, wandering too far off the line (#3) or not finding the smalll trail I wanted to take (#11). I think I planned them well, but I have to be more careful in my execution. I lost time wandering back and forth across the line and bashing through swamps. Happier with the result than yesterday.
Overall, a beautiful weekend! I didn't want to come home. I had a fantastic time racing against great competition, but I had hoped to race better. My performaces were ok at best, but that's the orienteer I was this weekend. There will be more races!
Saturday Oct 7 | ||
| Orienteering 45:52 [4] | ||
| I started the race well, finding 1 and 2 with ease. I bobbled 3, but relocated, and also bobbled 5 and 6. But no big disasters, and everyone was bouncing around a little out there. I would have had trouble making Katta and Pavlina's times, as it was, but then I really messed up going to 9 and 10. I had no plan, not attack point on 9 and I just ran and then wandered around for a long time. Finally bailed out south, running along the trail until I realize where I was. I thought I had more of a plan on 10, but went too far left and too far, past the control and hit the fence, turned the wrong way to relocate and lost more time.
Not my race. | ||
Friday Oct 6 | ||
| Event: 2006 North American Championships (Golden Leaf Orienteering Fest) | ||
| Orienteering 15:23 [5] | ||
| My favorite type of sprint and I totally blew it. I was having a great race, slowed down a bit to figure out #5, since I thought all the black lines were uncrossable. But my unfortunate mistake was running by #10 and not realizing it, running to the next corner to check those tress, even though that didn't look quite right, then stopping to really figure out what I did. Lost a minute and lost the race.
Oh well :) | ||
Tuesday Oct 3 | ||
| trail run 34:00 [2] | ||
| running with dad in Newton around some trails in some park :) It was nice ot run someplace new. | ||
| C • So descriptive. ;-) 8 | ||
| trail run 6:00 [4] | ||
| 6x 1 minute sprints with 30 seconds of rest, except that they weren't that fast since my legs are a bit tired from the last 2 days. Was running with the training map from january of NAOC terrain. Should be interesting! | ||
Monday Oct 2 | ||
| trail run 1:58:15 [2] | ||
| a long trail run in the Blue Hills with dad. We went to see where the 5 mile marker was on the trail to see if my 5:31 mile time is right. I don't really remember seeing the 5, but I think someone told me it was 5 miles. Dad and I couldn't quite remember where people were standing, so 5:31 will have to stay as being more or less correct.
My legs are tired tonight.
Sunday Oct 1 | ||
| trail run 39:46 [5] 10 km (3:59 / km) | ||
| My third, and fastest!!, trail race ever. This was like a 6 in intensity, especially for the last 2 miles. It was 6.21 miles in the Blue Hills, but on larger trails with fewer rocks than the skyline, but more than most trails.
My miles times were: 1- 6:37 2- 6:48 3- 6:26 4&5- 13:18 (I missed the 4 on the ground because I thought it was an arrow. The splits I took were 7:16 and 6:02, but I'm not sure how much I missed by.) 6- 5:31 .21- 1:04 Ok, so this is the first time I'm seeing my mile 6 time, and maybe that's why I thought I was going to die! Granted some of it was downhill, but still! I started with little expectations, but when I reached the first mile as first woman I started thinking about trying to come in first. At mile 3 I was running with another woman. She would get in front of me on the uphills, but then I would fly by her on the downhills. I was running behind her on mile 4, and slowly gaining on her during mile 5. But at this point I was running as if I had 200 meters left - not a mile and a half. I caught her during the beginning of the last mile on a downhill stretch and passed her. Now it was about 1200 meters of flat. I didn't think I was going to make it all the way to the line at the speed I was running, but I knew if I slowed down just a bit she would catch me. So I just kept the same stride and tried not to think about it. With about 300 meters to go my legs felt wobbly and I thought maybe I started to kick too soon (gee with 2 miles left I was kicking!). But I told myself there was no way I worked this hard to get passed in the last 300 meters, so I kept up the speed and finished 12 seconds before her. First woman, 10th overall, about 165 runners. Avg speed was 6:25 a mile and HR through the roof :) I think these haed to head races are good for me psychologically. Sometimes when I'm running I find it so easy to "give up." It doesn't feel like giving up at the time. It's just that at a certain point it requires a tremendous amount of effort even to go just that little bit faster. And that little effort is hard for me to always give. That's why I think the sprint series are good too, because they remind me how to race and be strong until the end. Not that I'm saying I should do more of these trail races. I am quite content with about one a year :)
| C • Nice work! 6 | ||
