| Orienteering 27:21 [5] | ||
| An o course that Ross set up around Franklin Park. Not quite a sprint as it was about 4k long, but not really a middle. More like a long sprint. I decided that I am typically not aggressive enough during these trainings, so I would start running this as if it were a 2-3k sprint and just see how far I got and what happened. I mamanged to keep my head screwed on right and didn't make any braindead mistakes. There was a lot of trail running between controls, especially at the end so I was able to plan each leg. I think I kicked ass though :) Although I was running as hard as I could the whole way with basically no mistakes. | ||

| Went running with Hill around Dedham and then we went shopping :) | ||

| I think I logged more or less all the running I did in Ukraine. | ||

| road run 46:00 [1] | ||
| I've returned home from WOC. I had a really wonderful time, although my races were disappointing, especially the sprint. Sigh. It's hard to work for a whole year towards something to have it end up as it did. Luckily, I was surrounded by great company the whole time and I really started to enjoy Kiev adter awhile. I don't know if I would ever move there, but it does have it's perks - mainly cheap food :) Of course, I still have some stomach issues today, but after 2 weeks of diarrhea, what's another day?
Hill, Dad and I went on a slow run around Dedham this afternoon and then drove to the farmers market. I picked out a few recipes that I am very excited about making this week - the highlights being they will not contain cabbage or dill. I still have the weird cut/sore/fungus on my arm and I think it's getting bigger. You all laughed at me in Ukraine, but if I have to get my arm amputated you'll regret your laughter!

| warm up for the first leg of the relay | ||
| Orienteering 43:33 [4] | ||
| The first leg of the relay at WOC. I was very nervous at the start and really did not want to run. But there I was on the line and they said go and I started running. Thankfully, it was very straight forward to the first control - it was a building at the end of a field. The first control was forked and then the 2nd and 3rd controls were the same for everyone. I was at the back of the main lead pack going to #3 and most everyone turned left out of the control, going downhill. The french girl in front of me paused and turned right out of the control, slightly uphill to the field. I looked at the map and went with her, and the Ukrainian girl came with. As we were running across the flat before going to the reentrant, other girls ran in from the side - switzerland and norway being among them. I was thrilled that they were behind me :) At the bottom of the reentrant was a swamp that looked ok to cross, but the mud was deeper than it seemed. I went up to my mid calf and then found a piece of land and a log to crawl across. As I was crossing, I looked behind me and saw one girl in up to her chest and another girl pulling her out. I went to the wrong forked control on #4, but I went there with everyone else. We all reloacted quickly and got our control. Then there were two more common controls, 5 and 6, and I was running with a pack that was being led by Norway and Australia. Everyone in my pack had a different control for #7, but it wasn't a problem. I saw theirs and ran to mine without losing them. Then there was a slight, but long, uphill climb to #8 and Norway and Australia pulled away and I was again running with France and Ukraine. We ran to #8 and #9 together and I ran through 10 and the spectator control (#11) with them. There was a road and trail run to #12 and Ukraine disappeared - either a different fork or she was lost. France and I punched #12 right behind Australia and Czech Republic - so we caught up some time somewhere. #13 was a common control and we all caught up to Estonia on the way. Then to #14 I made my one damaging mistake. I was pulled off to the left by the group, and I ran to their control instead of mine. I knew immediately where I was and after some choice words I sprinted to my control, punching it with Estonia. The damage was done though, the pack was gone. I think I may have lost them anyways though, since my control here was definitely the longer fork. I had to run right back by their control from mine on the way to #15. Then going to #15 I hit the fence higher than I thought I would and stopped with Estonia as we both said "downhill!" and sprinted downhill towards the control. As I was approaching I saw Latvia leaving the control. Over the fence we went on the fence crossing and to #16 with no mistake. Then sprint to #17 and into the finish.
The race was a blast :) I couldn't stop smiling when I finished. It was like a 6km sprint. It started with open areas and buildings, moved to technical and physical ups and downs through reentrants and then into flat, open subtle terrain. The mistakes at the end cost me about 2 minutes, which is disappointing, but I still had a good run. It wasn't like last year, where I had the type of mistake where you are standing in the woods and nothing makes sense and you can't find anything to reloacte off of and you are simply wandering around. When I went to the last control I immediately relocated and recovered, even though it still cost me time to run to my contorl and back again. This was by far my best race at WOC this year and it was nice to see that I was able to handle first leg of the relay again without never returning to my team :)

Friday Aug 24 | ||
| Orienteering 32:35 [2] | ||
| The model event for the relay. Got a taxi to the event area with Boris, Hill, Eric and Eddie. Tom drew us up a course to run around. He picked some new control locations which looked ok on the map, but we actually filled with stinging nettles. I had a good time jogging around and felt confortable with the map scale, which was my main concern. | ||
Thursday Aug 23 | ||
| road/trail run 35:10 [1] | ||
| A run along the canal with Hill, John and Viktoria. Viktoria and I stopped one bridge before John and Hill because we were feeling sluggish and it was the hottest time of the day and then canal was not nearly as shady as I thought it would be. We melted on the way back. | ||
Wednesday Aug 22 | ||
| trail run 10:06 [2] | ||
| Viktoria and I had one map of the women's middle course, so we decided to go out together and run the course. We didn't actually go to their start though and so warmed up by running to #1. | ||
| Orienteering 47:31 [2] | ||
| Running with women's middle course, from #1 to the finish, without doing the mandatory run through. The tracks through the woods were intense, especially in and out of the controls. I can see why people had difficulties in the beginning though. It was pine woods with rolling and steep hills that made it difficult to see far. We got a bit lost there too :) | ||

| trail run 38:37 [2] | ||
| I think this was a the day we jogged over to the island and used the o map that the organizers gave us. We stopped by the beach for a break and I went swimming in the river when Boris pushed me in :) | ||
Sunday Aug 19 | ||
| Orienteering 57:53 [5] | ||
| Long quali. A shaky course the whole way. I wasn't doing great inthe beginning, but by looking around me I could tell that others were also not doing well. There were lots of people standing around, running opposite directions and one girl even asked me where a control was. I didn't tell her and actually wished she would be lost longer so I could beat her :)
Missing by 10 seconds is annoying, because of course that time could have been made up anywhere. At the same time, most of my splits, and my placing duriing the course was outside the top 15. I wasn't navigating at a high enough level today to really makie it to the final. My splits ranged from 18th to 10th and although my placing started at 13th, I was at 20th in the middle and then climbed my way back up towards the end.
Saturday Aug 18 | ||
| Event: WOC 2007 | ||
| road/trail run 24:30 [1] | ||
| Morning jog along the canal before the sprint in the afternoon with Hill, Sandra and Boris. | ||
| Orienteering 15:30 [5] | ||
| Sprint quali. A real disappointment. I don't think it will come as a surprise to anyone when I say that I was really expecting, hoping, to make the final. I bombed on #3 and lost more than 2 minutes. My slowest split for the rest of the race was 16th place, and if I ran the time that was 16th for that leg I would have been 2 minutes faster, in 9th place. Of course, should have could have would have. I did what I did. The annoying thing is that I was lost, I relocated off a field. And in the field I saw a hunters stand. I looked down at the map and oh look, a hunters stand. I attacked twice from there, and still couldn't find the control. Go to a new place to attack from and see the control. The hunters stand I found wasn't on the map, although there is one mapped in the area. I think that is just wrong. I should have used more things to clue me in - the pond, the green, the hillside, but I saw the hunters stand and everything else was erased.
I made a few other route choice errors where I lost some time, but nothing serious. I still stand by two of my routes although I can see why another way might be considered better or faster. Really, just disappointed in myself after a years worth of training...

| road/trail run 25:00 [1] | ||
| Jogging before and after, and a bit inbetween the "400s" | ||
| road/trail run 5:00 [4] | ||
| Did "400s" along the canal with Hill and Viktoria. Ran fast for 75 seconds, really pushing, especially near the end of the "400." I was remembering how hard these were when I did them last week and stiving to make these feel just as hard. | ||
Monday Aug 13 | ||
| Orienteering 52:00 [2] | ||
| Middle distance training. | ||
Sunday Aug 12 | ||
| trail run 10:00 [1] | ||
| Warming up for the sprint race and looking for the bathrooms, which Hill and I never found. As I was crossing the road I also fell and cut myself up nicely :) I think I was still asleep. | ||
| Orienteering 17:30 [4] | ||
| The Ukrainian cup sprint race. I started a minute before Hill and she caught me going to #1. The route I picked was very good, I just executed it very badly, being dragged down the hill by other people and junky woods. Otherwise it was an ok sprint, although I did get stuck in stinging nettles over my head to #9 and Hill pulled away. We saw it all though - trash in the woods, stinging nettles, stray dogs and homeless people sleeping in the woods right in our path through the woods. It was a good start to Ukrainian orienteering. | ||
Saturday Aug 11 | ||
| road/trail run 25:00 [1] | ||
| Upon arrival in Kiev Hill and I went for a run along the canal, which at the time I thought was the river. It was a nice run and we learned that Kiev is not as scary as we imagined. | ||
Friday Aug 10 | ||
| road run 19:30 [2] | ||
| Went for a short run around Newton, as I was having trouble motivating myself out the door and into the cool rain. I figured I would be spending quite a few hours this evening on a plane, so running would be a good idea. Off to Ukraine tonight! | ||

| trail run 27:00 [1] | ||
| I went to Hammond Pond to run the short sprint that Ross set up 2 weeks ago. 11 minute warm up and then a 16 minute cool down. | ||
| Orienteering 18:42 [4] | ||
| Last time I ran the sprint, I ran it in about 11.5 minutes. This time I ran the first one in 9'32" and then 9'10". I was surprised I wasn't faster on the second time, since I made a few minor route choice mistakes on the first one. I am surprised I was this much faster than the first time, but I knew how to run out of each control this time, and I think that really sped up my run. Legs felt great today, which was a nice change. They are a bit weak going up hills, but I recovered well and didn't feel overly winded when I was done. | ||

| (rest day) | ||
| Rest day. I went shopping at the Wrentham Outlets with roommate Emily. It was a very successful trip. :) | ||
Tuesday Aug 7 | ||
| road run 23:00 [1] | ||
| I had to go to Dedham to feed Petunia (my cat), so I figured I would run from there. It was threshold run day, so I jogged the long way over to Stoney Lea to run 4 laps around the circle, and then jogged another lap and ran home. I stopped at the grocery store to pick up ingredients for my frozen chocoate peanut butter pie :) It's now sitting in my freezer waiting for dessert. Because the store didn't sell any chocolate graham crackers, I had to buy a chocolate oreo pie crust and it was a bit too small. So there was extra filling. I just put that in a separate bowl in the freezer, figuring someone would like to eat just the filling :) | ||
| road run (threshold) 20:00 [3] | ||
| First I told myself that I was only going to do 15 minutes of the planned 20 minute threshold run. I have been feeling tired during most of my workouts the last week, even with a few rest days. And then I told myself that I would only run 4 laps, which I figured would be a bit over 15 minutes. But 4 laps took me 9 minutes and 16 seconds, so I just had to run for 20 minutes because I was so close. My HR was lower than other threshold runs, around 178/180. It actually felt like a great pace. | ||
Monday Aug 6 | ||
| road run 31:00 [1] | ||
| Run over to the Newton South High School track and then back again. I have never run there, or even been there, before. The run is nice, although it does start out along route 9 for about a minute. But then it's residential roads. It only took me 14.5 minutes to get there, but then 16.5 to get back. Guess I was tired! The track isn't super nice - some of the track surface is coming off to reveal pavement underneath, but for training on it's fine. It's nice to know that it is so close! I alwasys go to Dedham to run illegally on one track or legally on the Dedham high track. But Hill, mom and dad are up in the Thousand Islands, enjoying the sun at the Worner's island house. | ||
| track workout 6:15 [4] | ||
| Ouch, this one hurt. 5 x400m at 75sec with 3-5 minutes of rest. These were difficult. I think maybe allowing myself more rest between them might have made the experience more pleasant, but I wasn't sure how long I was supposed to take and I was impatient. I actually ran the right times: 75, 75, 74, 75, 75. The 4th one was the slowest by 13 milliseconds :) The wind was really strong on the backstretch for the first two, which I think did slow me down a bit because the third one was faster when the wind died. Then on the fourth one I ran the first 200 2 seconds slower than normal (I was running 36 200s) and so I really had to push hard in the end. It was overcast, which I was grateful for, but very humid - it started really raining about 5 minutes after I got back. I just missed it! :) Good timing :)
You can tell that I no longer have as many things to do during my days, as I am writing a lot in my log :)

Sunday Aug 5 | ||
| trail run 1:06:00 [2] | ||
| Running at Powissett with Ross. We ran for 25 minutes, then did 10 minutes at threshold, ran for about 30 more minutes, another 10 minutes of threshold and then ran back to the car. | ||
| trail run 20:00 [3] | ||
| The 2 10 minute threshold runs in the middle of the long run. | ||
Friday Aug 3 | ||
| trail run 28:00 [1] | ||
| Last day of orienteering camp. Ran around setting out puzzle pieces and then a bit of running when they were setting out their own controls. I did a lot more walking today than usual because it was hot and tired and I wasn't too worried about any of the kids. | ||
| road biking 1:40:00 [2] | ||
| I think this was supposed to be an easy workout, but biking with Hill and dad is neve easy for me. Dad set a difficult pace that I could just manage without starting to die. My legs were burning pretty much the whole time I was pedaling. We did bike to get gelato, which was really the only reason I agreed to go :) It was heavenly. | ||
| Note | ||
| ok, so I think the updating of my log is complete! | ||

Thursday Aug 2 | ||
| Orienteering 34:00 [3] | ||
| Hill, Dad and I went to Blue Hills to run the three relay courses from years ago. We have done this workout before. It's good woods intervals running, as we know the courses pretty well, so it's all about speed. The first course is 4.8k.
It's really hot out | ||
| Orienteering 28:24 [3] | ||
| The second course, after about 10 minutes of rest. This one was 3.9k (I think). On the way to number 3 I got stung by a bee :( Once I finished I complained to Dad and Hill, but there was no talk of me not doing the last loop. I hate getting stung by a bee, dealing with the pain, but not getting anything out of it :) | ||
| Orienteering 23:30 [3] | ||
| And the third loop, dragging myself out into the woods. This one was about 3.4k. Quite tired at the end and really happy that it was over :) Hill sai she was dreading the workout all day. I told her she wasn't the one who got stung by a bee and who had their toenail fall off (the toe I bruised at the Fair Hill meet finally fell off. It was so gross - I showed it to everyone :)) | ||

| trail run 39:00 [1] | ||
| I forgot to add the time that I spent setting out controls in the Needham Town Forest for my students. Also running around making sure I didn't lose any. This group was more interesting in catching frogs than orienteering though, so most of them could be found wading into the pond. | ||
Wednesday Aug 1 | ||
| Orienteering 37:00 [2] | ||
| Dad planned some courses in a contour rich area of Powissett, and he took the trails off the map. It seemed like good Ukriane training, but the woods were very thick. Without the trails it was quite hard to determine where you were, and since these courses were supposed to be run at speed, it was difficult. Dad set out streamers for one course, and Hill and I for another, but then we decided to bag running them. So the streamers are out there for January when the vegetation is a bit better :) | ||
