Wednesday Oct 31

road run 33:00 [1]
Running over to WIlson Mountain and back
trail run 10:00 [4]
Running the trails in Wilson Mountian, although not the usual trail route. We shortened it and only ran hard for 10 minutes. It felt good to move fast, although I could only barely keep up with Hill.

Tuesday Oct 30

trail run 15:00 [1]
Dad and I went up to Mt. Misery to practice a sprint course, which I made up in the car ride there. A short warm up and cool down since I had to get home for a lecture at Wheelock on the De-tramaization of Black Male Youth.
Orienteering 30:00 [3]
We didnt think this course would take as long as it did. I had a bit of trouble recognizing some of the subtle contour features that I picked as control points, and dad and I both ran to the wrong control location on one control. We both had a really hard time finding the controls after it. I couldn't believe I had gone so far off my compass. The good thing is that my rough compass bearing was fine, the bad thing is that I ran to the wrong previous control without realizing it.

road run 33:00 [1]
Dad and Hill came to Newton to run since I had to go to Wheelock early to meet with my group about the presentation we were giving that night (about the socilaization of Blakcs/African Americans). We ran over to the Newton South track, but it was being used. So we ran on a loop of road instead.
track workout 13:00 [3]
We ran 4 "800s", or really, fast for 3'15" on the roads. Even though we looked at a map of the loop we were going to run, I got lost on the first loop :) Then I met up with Hill and she and I ran the next three together. Felt good.

Sunday Oct 28

other (tennis) 50:00 [2]
Ross and I drove to Dedham to play tennis with mom, dad and Hill. We went to the Dedham High School courts and were the only people there. Dad and mom played each other and Hill, Ross and I rotated who had to play alone. It wasn't hard to play with a partner, but by yourself was a workout! Then Hill and Ross played each other and I played mom and dad. Working hard for a lot of it, but we had to stop because my wrist was getting to tired to hold onto the raquet when I hit the ball. I wasn't playing as poorly as I might have imagined, since I haven't played on a regular basis since I was in elementary school. A good workout for the day after our Annual Halloween party (another successful year!).

Saturday Oct 27

road run 31:00 [1]
run with Ross around Newton when we woke up. It was raining, but warm, so it wasn't so bad.
road run 2:00 [4]
Running hard for 2 minutes near the end.

Friday Oct 26

road run 30:00 [1]
running with Hill over to Stoney Lea, and then jogging slowly between "400s" and then running home.
track workout 5:00 [4]
Hill and I ran for 75 seconds hard around Stoney Lea with about 2 to 2.5 minutes of jogging between. It was nice to run fast and I felt good. I wonder if I was really going 400 meters.

Thursday Oct 25

Note
Took off today because I had class, so I came home and made pizza for the group that was doing the Newton Street O training. Pizza was just as yummy as last time :) I also took off yesterday becasue I had to take ibuprofen in order to fall asleep Tuesday night because my legs were so sore. Mostly my joints, but I just have not been feeling well physically lately. Here's hoping that tomorrow I'm feeling better.

Tuesday Oct 23

Orienteering 51:06 [3]
Ran the same course in the Blue Hills as last wekk, only today it was only dad and I. We each had a map, and we took different routes when possible to the controls. As I have run this course a few times, I have become accustomed to running each leg a certain way, and it was interesting to see that other ways were actually faster. I went faster today, but it was easier because we were meeting up at every control, so there was a rest, and we weren't trading off one map, like Hill and I were.

Monday Oct 22

road/trail run 35:15 [1]
Did a short run around Newton by myself. My legs are dying, so I decided to wake them up by doing about 300 butt kicks and about 200 high knees while running. I don't think it helped.

Sunday Oct 21

Orienteering 1:27:30 [3] 9 km (9:43 / km)
A course at Powissett Peak. Legs are so dead, but didn't make any large errors - twice running part of the way downa wrong trail and a questionable route choice to #8. Beat Ross by a bit, although not in the official results as I broke my necklace leaving #3 and stopped my watch to look for it. It's the necklace that I have been wearing everyday for the past... oh, 4 or 5 years. It's my everyday stable, and now all that is left is a broken chain :(. It has made it through countless orienteering races, but got ripped off by a pine branch today, which didn't even draw blood on my neck.

Saturday Oct 20

road run 46:00 [2]
Run with Ross around Newton. Running has been a chore lately. My legs feel so very heavy and have no strength. Which is odd, because I don't feel like I'm training too much, and I haven't been training a lot, but I don't think I've been training too little.... But it just makes running unpleasant and tiring.
C • Heavy legs 1

Friday Oct 19

road run 30:00 [1]
warm up and cool down
road run 12:00 [3]
4x3 minutes at threshold pace with 30 seconds of rest arund Stoney Lea.

Wednesday Oct 17

road run 40:00 [1]
to from and in between
trail run 28:00 [3]
Wilson Mountain loops. 14:15 and 14:10, I think. Too bad I didn't log this earlier, because then I would remember!

A specially picked workout for my birthday! :) I'm old now.

Tuesday Oct 16

Orienteering 1:10:00 [2]
A course in the Blue Hills with Hill.

Monday Oct 15

Note
I'm pretty sure I ran today, I just can't remember what.

Sunday Oct 14

trail run 2:15:00 [2]
A long run with Hill in the Blue Hills. There were a ton of people out today for the beautiful weather. The lot was basically full when she and I finished our run. We ran far out from the peope though, which was nice. No dogs or kids to run around.
C • Happy Birthday!!! (oct 17th) 7

Saturday Oct 13

road/trail run 45:00 [2]
Just a run around Newton by myself. A really nice day and lots of people out walking dogs at the park.

Friday Oct 12

road run 40:00 [1]
Running over to Wilson Mountain with Hill. We were thinking about doing a repeat workout from Wednesday, since Hill wasn't there, but she was feeling tired, so we only did one loop.
trail run 13:52 [3]
Really surprised at this time for the trail loop. My HR might have been slightly higher than on Wednesday, although in the beginning I couldn't get it to read correctly. Maybe having Hill running right behind me helped me actually move, because on Wednesday I couldn't even get my HR up to 184, and today that was my max. Still strange that I was that much faster and I really didn't notice a difference.

Wednesday Oct 10

road run 42:00 [1]
Running over to Wilson Mountain with Dad, running down the hill between workouts and then running home.
trail run 19:00 [3]
Did the Wilson Mountian loop. Times were 14:38 and 14:25. Was a bit disappointed at how slow these times were. I was running at threshold, like I usually do, but this is a lot slower than my usual pace, which is usually a bit over 14:00. On the second one, I was really pushing it, but my HR wasn't going over 183, and I just couldn't run any faster. I guess all this time off has affected me!
Note
So, for anyone going to US Champs. Ross and I have flights that arrive at BWI at 10:00am on Friday and depart at 5:00pm on Sunday. Is there anyone else arriving around the same time or departing that we could get a ride with? I don't really want to rent a car for the two of us for the weekend (although I will be 25 by then!) as it will add expenses, but we'd be willing to share a car with people....

Tuesday Oct 9

road/trail run 1:21:00 [1]
I felt really gross during this run. It's a half day at work every Tuesday, which is really nice :) I was a bit late getting home because I took the T to work because my car is incredibly loud with no muffler. I ate left over beed stroganoff for lunch, which is very yummy. But then I wanted to get a long run in before it got dark and I couldn't remember when it got dark. Needless to say, I went running an hour after eating that lunch, and I just felt nauseous the whole way. The feeling got slightly better after 30 minutes, but I still feel gross and I've been done for 40 minutes. I should have stuck with the usual lunch - granola wih yogurt, a cheese stick, crackers and sometimes fruit.

I went running to Cutler Park which is about 2.5 miles away from my house. I have been meaning to try running there for a long time, so today I finally did it. I spent awhile in the parking lot with my head upsidedown trying to orient the map on the board to figure out where the trails went. I really couldn't read it without orienting it. On the way home I was planning on running on the roads, but the Blue Heron Trail continued along the Charles for a way out of Needham and into Newton, so I followed that. I often feel a bit jumpy when I am running on a new trail alone, but I imagined that if anyone came after me I could book it faster through the brambles to the road than they could :) And the only two people I saw along that trail were two guys smoking pot :)
C • We used to run there! 5

Orienteering 4:07:11 [3]
Hudson Highlander!

Coming from a wedding the day before I wasn't sure I was even going to make this event. I woke up at 5am on Saturday to get my hair and makeup done and get into my Bridesmad dress for an 11am wedding. I was up all day and by the time I went to bed at 10:15pm it felt like 3 am. I have not been that tired in a long time. Ross convinced me to go to the Highlander by offering to drive, so we wokr up at 4am and hit the road. We would have made it with a few minutes to spare, but we ran over a tire on teh road and had to do some repair to the underside of my car with duct tape and wire. We arrived just as everyone was walking to the start.

Hill and I ran the whole Highlander together, which Hill warned me we were going to do. I think Hill might have ben able to run away from me during it if she really wanted to, but she was nicely waiting for her older sister - especially during the trail run. We navigagted well together, except for #2 where I had no idea where we were and Hill thought she knew. We ran into John F., who was standing around lost. We assured him we knew where we were going and ran of and into Dad, who was wondering why were were going completely the wrong way. After a brief group consult, we figured it out and managed to find #2. At this point, I was sure we were behind everyone and we would have a lot of catching up to do. We pulled away from a few people on the first map, and then caught and lost a few more (JJ, Mike Lyons and Joe B.) on the trail run. We caught up to Jon Campbeel and 2 cadets on the third map. We lost Jon around the end of the third map, and then Hill and I couldn't shake the two cadets on the fourth map. At one point Hill almost lost me on 4th map #3 where I was cutting between trails and she was insisting I was going to wrong way. She took off down the trail and the cadets looked from me to Hill and followed Hill. I decided I wasn't terribly confident and ran after them as well. But then I tried to cut the corner and got stuck in thick vegetation and lost a bit more time. A good route choice and running up part of the hill to the control helped me catch back up. Sprint finish, beating the two cadets and Hill (who cramped up on the pavement) and punching the finish box before them, but the cadet behind me was less than a second back so we officially tied. I was really surprised to find that neither Peter nor Pavlina was in front of us, and actually we had been in front of them since #1! I was sure we were behind a really large pack of people. 4th place overall, which might be my best Highlander finsh - and after probably the worse preparation ever. I did comment afterwards that it was strange to look down at my hands as I was climbing with them up hills and over rocks and see the french manicure :) Hill and I had good teamwork - she won Queen of the Mountain, I won overall, and we tied on the trail run :)

Monday Oct 1

road/trail run 1:25:00 [2]
A sortof long run around Dedham by myself. The rest of the family is on a bike trip in the Adirondacks, so I went to Dedham to feed the cat and go running. I wanted this to be a longer run, but I had to get back so I could make it to class on time. Plus, I was already adding on more and more to my planned route to make it long enough and I just wanted to be home. My leg is still hurting from the long run I did last week!
