Saturday Dec 22

xc skiing 1:30:00 [1]
Went skiing with dad, mom, Hill and Ross in the Blue Hills. The snow is great because there is a thick crust adn then about 56 inches of snow on top. We were breaking trail for some of it, but it wasn't as hard as last year! My foot feels better - I think the night boot Wyatt gave me has REALLY helped it! Thanks Wyatt!

Saturday Dec 15

Event: Valley Forge Battle to the End O' Marathon

Note
Dad, Hill and Ross drove down to run the orienteering marathon this weekend. Since I arrived at the library at 9:30 this morning, I have sat in one chair for 6 hours and typed many pages on race, privilege and oppression. Dad, Hill, Ross and a whole bunch of other confused people are probably finished or are just finishing their orienteering marathon. I feel sort of like a fat slug. Albeit one that knows a great deal about institutionalized oppression.

Note
I just noticed that my thumb is sore from massaging my foot so much. This realization does not help my feelings of weakness.

Note
I might as well admit I'm injured. Lying about it and denying it really hasn't made it go away yet. My right arch has been hurting for awhile (won't go into how long) but it never hurt while running, and was mostly sore in the mornings when I woke up. It never hindered my training. But then I woke up the morning after the Traverse and my heel hurt with every step. I haven't run since then. My criteria for injury is if it is impacting my daily workout schedule, and this is, so I'm just going to admit I'm injured. My planned 2 week running break was extended into a 4 week running break.

The good note is that my heel no longer hurts, and it's back to just being my arch. I took Ibuprofen in the beginning, and I've been streching it a lot and massaging the heck out of it. Zan has been wonderful for advice :) Wearing flat shoes also helps, as I'm on my feet a fair bit during the day. I really need new running shoes (again, won't go into how old they are), and I hope to get some for Christmas :)

Sunday Dec 9

other (walking on snow) 10:00 [1]
Climbing up and down the slippery hill looking for a Christams tree with my family! We went to a new cut your own farm today. It was fun, but the guy who owns it doesn't trim the trees or anything. You just set out on the hillside and find one you like, cut it down (usually cutting about halfway up the tree because it's so big) and drag it back down the hill. I picked out the perfect tree and it just fits in the apartment. The very top is bent over from the ceiling, so we may have to trim it to get the star on. Hopefully we'll decorate tonight!

Friday Dec 7

rowing machine 35:00 [1]
Erging again while watching Buffy. I didn't make it the full 42 minutes of the show, but 35 is 10 more than last time.

My winter training break has begun! A few weeks before and longer than initially planned, but I'm probably taking about a month off from running. Hopefully I'll do more erging and strength training. Then Ross and I head to the Galapagos Islands on the 23rd for almost 2 weeks, where there will be plenty of hiking and walking around for exercise. Now, I'm just trying to get through the end of the semester - 1 more week!

Tuesday Dec 4

rowing machine 25:00 [1]
The plan was to go for a long run... but the training schedule for the next month has changed. But 25 minutes of erging is the most I've done in a long time. I wasn't pulling hard and was watching Buffy at the same time, which made it much better :)
C • So the training plan has changed? 3

Sunday Dec 2

Event: Blue Hills Traverse

Orienteering 1:59:38 [3] 13.6 km (8:48 / km)
I ran with Hill the whole way, which was more or less planned. We have fun running together and run about the same speed. Hill seemed like she might pull away from me at times, especially on the uphill trail sections, but either she slowed down because she felt bad for me, or I hung on. We traded off leading, and although we had a slow start, we ended we.. We finished only 10 minutes behind Ross who was the winner. Hill should have beat me but she ran by the last control, running instead to a white control. Also running with Steve Olafson on and off, as he would take a slightly different route, but then we would see him again. I saw the leaders leaving 18 as Hill and I were approaching 17. Right after that Hill slipped on the hillside and when she grabbed a tree it pulled her epunch off. I didn't realize it, so I started running down the hill after Hill just as she was turning back up the hill and she headbutted me right in the stomach. We found her epunch after a fairly short search and as we were running away Hill mentioned how she just headbutted me in the stomach. Immediately, we both started singing the tune from Muppets Christmas Carol when the boy muppet in the choir on the streets gets hit in the face with a cymbal and starts to headbutt the boy who did it to him. It's our favorite part of that wonderful movie. Ahh, good time had by us out in the woods :)

Saturday Dec 1

Event: Little Blue Hill Sprint

trail run warm up/down 1:00 [1]
Hopping to stay warm.
Orienteering 23:19 [4]
Little Blue Hill sprint that Ross put on. It was a small but dedicated crowd who set out to brave the cold (although tomorrow will be colder). I was running at a fast and confortable pace until #6, where I missed the control by a fair bit, dragging Brendan off. I had been running behind Giovanni, and when I turned around to head back to the control I saw him, then Viktoria and then Jeff punch it and run out. I had to then pick up the pace to catch back up to them all. I had a clean rest of the race and got ahead of Giovanni going to the last control. I struggled a bit going through the brambles to the finish, trying to be fast and aviod the thorns, while still staying on my compass so I wouldn't miss the finish. I ended up wearing too many layers and was quite hot in the end. I won back the zucchini bread that Ross made as prizes - yum :)
Orienteering 10:00 [1]
pcking up controls. I did remove my sweatpants so I was only wearing two layers of pants, but I kept on my hoodie and mittens. Brrr...
