| road run 33:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Hill and Dad came to Newton today, which was a nice change. I live between them both, and Hill didn't want to drive all the way to Dedham to go running. So we ran over to Comm. Ave to do a threshold run, and then ran home. | ||
| road run (threshold) 10:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Threshold run along Comm. Ave. I couldn't quite get the HR monitor to work for the first 5 minutes, but then it kicked in. Also after 5 minutes we began to run mostly uphill. I was worried that this would be really difficult for me, but it felt like a normal threshold run! My quads are still sore - I'm assuming from plyometrics. They didn't hurt during the day, but did after the threshold run. | ||

Wednesday Jan 30 | ||
| road run 55:00 [2] 6.17 mi (8:54 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| I started this run with my roommate, Emily. She has just started running again, and has refused to go running with me. She will sneak out the door and go the opposite direction if she knows I am heading out running soon. But today I convinced her that we would start our runs together and then branch off. I ran the first 10 minutes or so with her. It was a good warmup pace for the rest of my run. I planned out a route from my house with google pedometer and ran down Comm Ave. to Washington and then up through Waban on some streets I really love to run on. My quads are sore from plyometrics, but otherwise I felt great! Also, the new headphones that Ross bought me stay in my ears (especially my right ear, where it always falls out) and I was listening to some good music :) | ||
Tuesday Jan 29 | ||
| road run 58:16 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Dad was able to run with me today, although I think his ankle was hurting a bit. We ran around Dedham and discussed the books I have recently read - The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down - A Hmong child, her American doctors, and the collision of two cultures by Anne Fadiman and now I am reading We wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with out families - Stories from Rwanda by Philip Gourevitch. Both are very good books, and I highly recommend both, but not terribly uplifting. After reading Life and Death in Shanghai by Nien Cheng, I have decided that I enjoy well written nonfiction and that inspired me to read these last two books. | ||

| other (StepMania) 45:00 [1] | ||
| So today I wore the heartrate monitor while doing stepmania. My average HR on the difficult songs is between 145 and 153, which is my HR when jogging on the roads. So therefore, I'm logging it. I have decided to only log if I do sessions of over a half hour, since I always play 3-9 songs each night after or before dinner. Tonight I was working on the combo jumps. I can do right/left and up/down, but I have trouble when down/right and left/up and then right/up come right after eachother. So lots of practice and I have greaty improved. Now if only I could find something to do with this talent. Cristina and I could do a team fundraiser? :)
As a side effect of doing this before going to bed, when I close my eyes at night to go to sleep I see arrows scrolling up the screen.

| trail run 1:48:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Ross, Dad, Hill and I met at Pia's house where Wnedy joined us and we went on a trail run. The trails were a bit icy, but not too bad. It was lightly snowing at the time, and that provided a good cover on the snow. After about 45 minutes Pia and Wendy split off to head back to the house - with the map. Dad knows the area well, so we weren't too worried. Then we wandered a bit off of where we usually run. As we were going across a field, dad was in the lead and stepped on a frozen puddle. Unfortunately, the ice didn't hold dad's weight, so instead of just skidding across the ice his foot fell through and he fell down, skidding through the ice chunks. I thought he hurt his knee on the ice, but he actually twisted his ankle. He thought he might be able to run, but the ground was too uneven. So he and Ross walked out to the nearest road and Hill and I attempted to find our way back to Pia's house without a map. We certainly did not take the shortest route back to her house, but we managed to get there. Then Pia hopped into the car with us and we drove to pick up Ross and dad, who were quite cold, but otherwise alright. Needless to say, my planned 80 minute run was a bit longer. | ||
Friday Jan 25 | ||
| road run 31:31 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| I was going to go the the CSU training this evening around the streets in Cambridge, but that would be after dark and it was cold enough during the day. I figured since I could go during daylight hours I should enjoy it. Plus, Hill came to Newton to run with me. We tried to run the trails around Cold Spring, but they are much too icy to run on still. | ||
| lifting/strength (pilates) 21:00 [1] | ||
| Only up to doing the 20 minute workout, which now feels much easier! This puts me over my 3.5 hours of strength for January! YAY! I did it! | ||
| lifting/strength (plyometrics) 10:00 [1] | ||
| Still the same exercises. These are not getting easier. | ||
Thursday Jan 24 | ||
| road run 33:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Running over to Westfield Street, this time with dad. He came home right as I was leaving and it was nice to have the company. | ||
| road run 11:00 [4] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Ran repeats up Westfield Street hill, like last week. This week I was moving faster and made it further up the hill. 2 minutes running hard uphill, then one minutre jogging down. This time I was smart and brought gloves so I could look at my watch without freezing my hands, but I still want to invent the shirt with the watch window. | ||

| To round out to an hour. | ||
Wednesday Jan 23 | ||
| road run 1:05:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Went running with Hill around Newton. I grabbed a street-o map off the floor as we left and made Hill navigate in the beginning since I forgot gloves and couldn't hold the map. | ||
| lifting/strength (plyometrics) 10:00 [1] | ||
| More jumping around. Then Hill and I sat down and did almost all of the World of O Countdown to Christmas legs online. | ||
Tuesday Jan 22 | ||
| road run 58:30 [2] 6.43 mi (9:05 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| I went running with dad around Dedham. I love Tuesdays because I have a half day at work and I can get so much more done with the rest of the day. It began to rain as we were finishing, and just as I commented that 35 and rainy was the worst, it snowed for about 2 seconds. Then it went back to raining. After all the jumping and hopping yesterday, my hamstrings and calves are quite sore. Sitting on the floor and getting back up again requires some manouvering. | ||
| rowing machine 10:00 [1] | ||
| After running, while watching Alias. The episode was so good, that I did watch the rest of it while I was doing the armchair orienteering exercises. | ||
Monday Jan 21 | ||
| other (Step Mania) 45:00 [1] | ||
| To warm up before going out side I played a little step mania :) I'm logging this as a 1, because it's not quite as painful as running, but you can certainly work up a sweat. I have to play in shorts and a t-shirt and our house is only about 53 degrees during the day. | ||
| C • step mania is a lot of fun!... 1 | ||
| road run 30:00 [2] 3.8 mi (7:53 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Did a short loop as I was planning on coming back and trying some basic plyometric exercises that I found online. I was all warmed up when I left the house and was fine until I turned down Beacon Street and froze from the wind. Ross bought me new headphones that actually fit so I wore those today as well. The are like earbuds, but then have a iece that wraps around your ear to hold them in. He got me a pair earlier, but they were too big. These ones are just right:) They were pretty comfortable - although it was hard to tell since my ears went numb. | ||
| lifting/strength (plyometrics) 10:00 [1] | ||
| After ten minutes of the exercises I couldn't jump anymore. I knew it was time to stop when I nailed my toe on the box when trying to jump on top of it. These were fun to do, but very tiring. I can't imagine keeping this up for much longer! But I am trying to add more strength to my training and so hopefully plyometric training will be here to stay. | ||
| C • Way to go! 1 | ||
| other (Step Mania) 45:00 [1] | ||
| Another 45 minute session of Step Mania. I have passed the beginner stage and am solidly in Light. I struggle with changes in pace and combination moves. Needless to say, but calves are getting tired and the balls of my feet are sore. You know the padded shorts they make for biking? I need padded socks for Step Mania.
I'm sure I'll put in another hour or so before bed :)

Saturday Jan 19 | ||
| road run 46:15 [2] 5.52 mi (8:22 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Ross dragged me out of the house this morning, which is unusual as it is usually the other way around. We ran the 5.5 mile loop that he ran last Saturday. I was tired, especially in the beginning and did my fair share of complaining. The snowy and icy sidewalks gave me something to think about, which was nice. After about 15 minutes I felt better and the was running well on the way back. Ross ran this loop last week in 38 minutes so I was certainly slowing him down. He needs a faster running partner :) I was working pretty hard though, probably just above chat pace :) | ||
Friday Jan 18 | ||
| road run 36:30 [2] 3.83 mi (9:31 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Another run with Hill around Newton. I think we may have been moving faster than the other day. Another great winter day - sunny! I can take the cold, I just get weary of the gloom. | ||
| lifting/strength (pilates) 51:00 [1] | ||
| Hill and I did the long pilates after running. It seemed like a good idea, but near the end we were both doing the adapted exercises again! But I am well on my way to the 3.5 hour goal! | ||
Thursday Jan 17 | ||
| road run 39:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Just as I heading out the door mom came home and I convinced her to run over to Westfield Street with me for intervals. It was nice to have company on the run, as dad is sick and was fixing my car :) | ||
| road run 8:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| I ran intervals up Westfield Street at just below threshold pace. I did 2 minutes on running uphill and 1 minute jogging downhill. I should have worn gloves, as my hands got cold since I had to pull up my sleeve to look at my watch. I want a shirt where you can pull the sleeves over your hand and have a little hole so that you can see the face of your watch. Does the exist? Sort of like thumb holes for your watch. I thought this would be the best idea, until I realized you could wear your watch on the outside of your shirt. | ||

| Watching Alias. | ||
Wednesday Jan 16 | ||
| road run 55:00 [2] 5.2 mi (10:34 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Run with Hill around Newton as she got out of work early and dad is sick :( I'm blaming the icy and snowy sidewalks for our slow speed, since it didn't feel that slow! | ||
Tuesday Jan 15 | ||
| xc skiing 45:00 [1] | ||
| Skiied with dad around the golf course. The landscape is beautiful because all of the snow is still stuck to the trees. A winter wonderland. | ||

| Snow day today! DId pilates with my roommate this morning. | ||

Sunday Jan 13 | ||
| trail run 1:10:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| We were aiming for one hour and I was navigating around the trails. I didn't get lost, I just thought it would take us less time to get back to the car. We were moving at an easy pace, but it was nice to do a longer run on trails. We encountered some large puddles, but no bad ice. Tomorrow we are supposed to get 8-13 inches of snow though - so no trail running for awhile! The weather this winter has been warm, then a dumping of snow, then warm, then more snow. Just as the last snow melts, we get a new pile. | ||

Thursday Jan 10 | ||
| road run 35:30 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Went for a run with Hill around Newton. Another nice day where I can run in light pants and a t-shirt. My new shoes are great! I really really love my old DS Trainers, but they are quite expensive. Then I planned on getting 2120s, but they didn't have any in my size. So I settled for 1130s, but really, I don't notice a difference. The really strange thing is that I have been wearing a size 8.5 in the DS Trainers, but I got a size 7 in 1130s. Maybe wearing shoes a size and a half too big is the secret to running? I guess I'll fine out. | ||

| Hill and I did the hour pilates video when we returned from running. I think I pulled something in my neck and by the end of the video I was adapting the adapted version of the exercises. Some of them, I can't imagine anyone doing (except they were doing them in the video - but then again, these people can touch their toes to the ground over their head). A good core, quad and butt workout. I was promised a tighter butt and thighs if I keep this up. | ||

Wednesday Jan 9 | ||
| road run 28:46 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| A short run with dad. My quads are sore from the last two days, so we were only planning on running for 20 minutes. At 20 minutes though I felt good so we went a bit longer. Such nice weather! I think this happens every January - it gets warm and then plunges back into the low 30s and 20s. | ||
| rowing machine 15:00 [1] | ||
| I was going to erg for 20 minutes, but then I ran longer than I planned... so 15 minutes it was, while watching some Alias. Hill got me the Alias video game for Christmas. Let's just say that Sydney experienced many medical emergencies while I was controlling her. | ||
Tuesday Jan 8 | ||
| road biking 1:15:00 [2] | ||
| Biking with dad. I think he forgot that I haven't done any exercise in 3 weeks. I was trailing behind him the whole way and he would have to wait for me to catch up. The saddest thing is that my legs are actually sore from my 30 minute jog yesterday. The next few weeks should be interesting...
I wonder if these really work as well as they say... http://www.heel-that-pain.com/pain_relief.php

| lifting/strength 12:00 [1] | ||
| Calf raises, crunches, back exercises, attempts at more than 6 push ups in a row. An amusing sight probably. My cat was enjoying it though, as I could pet her as I was doing crunches :) | ||
Monday Jan 7 | ||
| road run 33:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| First time running after about 5 weeks of nothing. It's hard to believe it's been that long! Hill came over and we ran around Newton. My legs were tired, which is relaly no surprise. I thought about doing strength work many times during these past couple of weeks, but never got quite to doing it. It's all sort of bittersweet :) | ||
| lifting/strength (pilates) 20:00 [1] | ||
| On my way to doing more than 3.5 hours of strength this January! Good goal strength buddy :) Hill and I did pilates together when we came back from running. She then suggested push ups, but video games won out as the preferred activity. | ||
Friday Jan 4 | ||
| Note | ||
| I have returned from the Galapagos! It was one of the most amazing vacations I have ever taken - so very different from orienteering vacations, and yet so very awesome. I swam with sea lions, sharks and turtles, hung around with blue footed boobies and giant tortoises and lots of very fun people :) We ate lots of wonderfully cooked fish, duck, octopus, shrimp, and lobster at every meal. Exercise was very minimal (one of the people on the boat tried to convince me that we were really getting in to shape walking over "uneven" ground for about 2 hours each day. I gave up arguing with him after a bit. I don't think he realized who he was talking to.) Perfect vacation for a training break and now I'll begin the 2007 training - as soon as I get my new sneakers for Christmas. | ||
| C • Welcome back. 3 | ||
| Note | ||
| Training for the last 3 years. As a note, I didn't log any of my training when I was at WOC in 2006 in Japan, which would explain why the o hours are so low there.
.........................2005..........2006........2007 Orienteering..........55.5.........111.........101 Running...............122...........157........142 Xc skiing.............18.............6.25.......7 Rowing................ 6.25..........7.25......5.75 Strength...............2.5.............3.........3.75 Other...................13.5..........5.25......1.25 Road biking.........................12.5.......16.5 Total hours:...........217........308.........278.5 Total sessions:......259..........400......... 398 This year looks all right, especially considering that I haven't run for the last 4 weeks. This summer, I felt like I had not trained enough physically, but I think that was mostly in my head. It wasn't a great year results wise - I had some really good solid races in the early spring (SC Raleigh meet, Penn. meet and Harriman) but then I got very inconsistent. This inconsistency continued for the rest of the year, and I didn't have the great races I usually have during WOC, especially the sprint which clears all others as being the worst race in a long time. I?m hoping that it was a good building year and I?ll see the results of the efforts this year. I really should make a goal of doing more than 3.5 hours of strength training this year :) I should be able to meet that!
