xc skiing 10:00 [2]
We tried skiing a trail that we thought was groomed. We went uphill a bit, but when it still wasn't groomed we turned around.
xc skiing (skate) 2:00:00 [3]
Today I put on the skate skiis, since I knew we could skate the section along the trail because they didn't double track it. We went out and back along the river trail. Hill headed out on her own and did the loop that we did yesterday backwards. Dad, Ross and I skated the river trail out to Dana Lodge and back. Dad and Ross were setting a fast pace in the beginning and I had to work hard to barely keep up. As soon as we turned around though I was moving well and Ross dropped off behind Dad and I. I was really enjoying sections of it on the way back since a lot of it was slightly downhill and we were flying. The only problem was the it was warming up so the snow was getting soft. The shady spots were still nice, but then sunny spots were softer. Which meant that I almost pitched onto my face quite a few times as my skis suddenly slowed down in the softer snow. My balancing troubles led to the tops of my feet getting tired from constantly trying to balance myself. On the steeper downhills I could be seen leaning back and forth as my skis sped up and slowed down. Not the most graceful, but I stayed upright :) Working hard.

Saturday Mar 29

xc skiing 3:00:00 [2]
Arrived in Jackson and after a breakfast of French Toast with strawberries, bananas and whipped cream we headed out to ski. The trail loop we decided on was only about 20K so we were figuring on 2 hours. Part of the route was supposedly double tracked so we wouldn't be able to skate. For this reason, Dad, Ross and I decided to wax our classic skis. Hill couldn't be detered from her skate skis. The trip took us longer than intended for a few reasons. One is that I am so slow on classic skis. I always opt for skate skiing when possible and haven't classic skiied since last winter (if even then). So Ross and I slowed everyone down. Then we climbed uphill for the first half, if not more. Two hours into it we figured we had about 2 hours left at the rate we were going. Then we hit a 3k downhill strech and that picked up the pace :) The way back along the river was nice and I was sick of slowly skiing along, so Ross and I decided to skate. Skating in my classic skis was not the easiest thing, but it was faster than I was moving before. Ross and Hill pulled ahead, and eventually Dad did was well. I eventually went back to classic skiing and shuffled along until we finished. Tiring trip!

Friday Mar 28

road run 21:45 [1] 2.7 mi (8:02 / mi)
shoes: Asics 1130
A short run on Newton before leaving to go skiing in NH this weekend. I find that if I don't run my arch is very stiff and sore the next day.

Thursday Mar 27

road run 53:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
10 minutes over to the road
10 minutes down the hill each time
10 minutes home
road run 21:00 [4]
shoes: Asics 1130
The plan was to run the courses at Rocky Woods that we will be missing this weekend (I'm going xc skiing in Jackson, NH with the family and Ross). But Hill had crew practice at 6, so we didn't have time. Instead, we did something terribly unusual and ran the Westfield Street hill.

Times: 7:02, 7:03, 7:02
HR monitor was really pissing me off and not working well, but I think my HR was above 180 most of the time. Except at the end of the third one I decided to run faster and I got my HR up to 187 at the top of the last steep section. My legs were understandably tired after 2 hard days.

Wednesday Mar 26

trail run 32:30 [1]
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Warm up: 12:30
Warm down: 20:00
I drove over to Hammond Pond to run the course that Ross planned for last weeks CSU training. I was going to run over, as it's only about a 15-20 minute run, but I wanted to orienteer in my oshoes and I didn't want to run over in them or carry them.
Orienteering 16:12 [4]
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Ran the course two times. The first time I tried to go to the right to #1, but drifted left and so ran the first half of the leg to the right of the line and then went to the left. A bit sloppy on a few other controls - not deciding exactly what I was doing ahead of the time and slowing down slightly when coming into the control. I didn't wear my HR, but I was running at a fast, but not deadly, pace. My ankles were rolling around the whole time and felt like elastic bands. Which I suppose is better than having them feel too stiff.
Orienteering 14:38 [4]
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Shaved off a good bit of time. I didn't take splits for unknown reasons, but I certainly saved time going to #1. The rest of the course I was simply more confident than the first run. This time I was orienteering aggressively and confidently. It made me think about how I should be able to orietneer all the time with these feelings. The knowledge that your feature will be there and checking off the correct features along the way. This is a feeling to strive for in all my races - confidence!

Tuesday Mar 25

road run 30:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Running to Wilson Mountain and back.
Dad and I confused eachother, and I thought that he was going to call if he couldn't go running and he thought he was going to call if he could go running. I sat around Dedham for awhile, then around 5:00 finally got out the door to go running. The sitting around isn't good because I have too much time to think about how I don't want to run. I decided to run over to Wilson Mountain and run a 20 minute threshold run by running out and back on the outer trail.
trail run 27:37 [3]
shoes: Asics 1130
It took me 14:01 to run to the end of the trail, which, if I remember correctly, is a good time for threshod running speed. Then I turned around to run back and I figured I might as well run at threshold all the way back to the beginning of the trail, instead of stopping at 20 minutes as planned. Plus, since I just signed up for the Flying Pig I have to get in shape quick! Felt good running today and even made it back faster - 13:36. It helps that it's mostly downhill on the way back. HR around 180 most of the way, and I hit 186 sprinting back to the beginning to make it under 28 minutes.

Monday Mar 24

road run 30:30 [1]
shoes: Asics 1130
An easy run around Dedham with Hill and Dad.
road run 1:30 [5]
shoes: Asics 1130
We stopped at a hill and for the fun of it ran up it 3 times. It took 24, 23, and 22 seconds to run up it at full speed. It felt good :)
rowing machine 10:00 [2]
Erging in Dedham. I get bored after about 10 minutes, even with the TV going.

Sunday Mar 23

road run 2:10:00 [2]
We were visiting my grandparents in NJ, so dad, Hill, Ross and I went on our usual long run through the farmlands and rolling hills. The time passed by quickly, which is always nice during long runs :) I think dad (coach) is planning on linking some pictures we took while running on his log.

Friday Mar 21

trail run 10:00 [1]
No work today - Good Friday. Dad and I went to the Blue Hills to do a memory course.
Orienteering 1:06:00 [2]
shoes: Pro 1 O shoes
Dad and I did a memory course at the Blue Hills. It's gusty out today, but in the woods it's beautiful! Sunny and feels warm while running. I could smell the warm leaves and it made me anxious for spring! Good course, although I was losing concentration near the end. On my second to last control I didn't study the map at all when dad was running. When he got to his control I took a quick peek and then headed off toward mine. I had a hard time telling which reentrant was which and I stopped about where I thought my boulder should be. Dad made me be sure, so I ran to find another boulder in a reentrant and I attacked from there, and I ended up in the same spot, although it still didn't look right. So then I went out to the trail on the other side of the control and attacked again and ended up in the same spot again. Turns out that I was in the right spot the first time, but I was thrown off because the printing of the map was bad and it didn't print a nearby boulder. Also, I wasn't confident in my ability the first time, so even though I was right, I doubted myself. Orietneering without streamers or controls means that you have to be confident in your decisions! It's good practice.

I'm happy with my training this past week.
Note
Does eating an entire bag of mini Robin Eggs in 24 hours count as training?

Thursday Mar 20

road run 50:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Running over to Westfield Street and back. And down the hill between intervals. It was raining on the way over, although was almost pleasant when we finished.
road run 21:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 1130
What a surprise! Three times up Westfield Street with Hill and dad at theshold pace. Times were 6:56, 6:58, 6:59. Fast times. Tired legs. Low HR. I didn't hit 181 until the top of the beginning hill on the third time up. On the first two I was 180 or below the whole way. Quite strange, since these times are faster nd my legs were heavy feeling, byt the HR was low. I was holding the watch in my hand, instead of wearing it around my wrist. But I don't think that should make a difference.

Wednesday Mar 19

road run 47:50 [2] 6.2 mi (7:43 / mi)
Running with a high school friend around her place. It was good that I had the running date planned, or else I may have skipped running in the cold rain. I guess we were running faster than I normally run, but I could still keep a conversation and it felt good.

Tuesday Mar 18

road/trail run 1:10:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Long run with a threshold run with Hill around the neighborhood. We ran to Cutler Park, but took a wrong turn so it took longer than anticipated to get there. I ate chili for lunch and I thought we were running around 4. We ran around 2 instead and the chili wasn't sitting well in my stomach.
trail run 17:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 1130
Threshold run with Hill around Cutler Park. Didn't feel so good and, as usual, had a hard time keeping my HR above 180. But it was above 175 the whole way. Mostly on flat trails, which always makes it harder for me to keep the HR up.

Sunday Mar 16

trail run 1:41:00 [1]
shoes: Montrail
Long run with dad on trails in Weston. We were thinking they would be cleared of snow, but there were some icy downhill sections. It's fun to run around there because the map isn't terribly accurate so we spend awhile running around trying to find the correct trail and getting lost. It gives you something to do while running :)

Saturday Mar 15

Orienteering 38:17 [3]
shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw
Dad and I went to the Blue Hills for an orienteering/ woods interval workout. We have old relay courses that we have run on many times. Each one is slightly different, so you have to look at the map, but I know about where most of the controls are. So this means that most of the training is running fast through the woods. Today it rained/snowed in the morning, so there was a later of slush on the ground. This made the hills a bit more tricky than usual, and since almost all of the Blue Hills is hills, I had to go a bit slower in speed, although still working just as hard because of my feet slipping around. The first loop we did was the Blue relay loop. All of the courses go around the pond, which took about 9 minutes and that I ran at threshold pace each time (it's flatter and more open).
Orienteering 28:30 [3]
shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw
Course #2 after about a 5 minutes break. Again running 9 minutes at threshold around the pond.
Orienteering 23:30 [3]
shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw
And course 3, again with 9 minutes at threshold around the pond. Very wet feet at the end of this, but quite warm while running. We saw lots of fathers out hiking around the pond with their kids. One little girl said as I ran by, "Nice day for a jog!" And I thought, I'm not jogging!

Friday Mar 14

road/trail run 32:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
An easy run from Newton with some high knees and butt kicks thrown in to entertain myself and strech out. Made sure I did atleast 5 minutes of streching when I got home.

Thursday Mar 13

road run 50:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Running over to Westfield Street for the Thursday hill threshold training!
road run 21:30 [3]
shoes: Asics 1130
Times: 7:01, 7:05, 7:05. My HR the first time was between 178 and 180, which is lower than usual, but the time was fast and the legs were tired. My HR for the second was more around 180-181 and then 181-182 on the third. Dad started right in front of me halfway up the third one and my HR got a bit high (184) as I unconsciously tried to catch him. I had to force myself to slow down. Too competitive :)
Note
My calf was itching today at work and when I scratched it I pulled out a thorn from Tucson. I almost showed my student, but then I thought they might be grossed out :)

Wednesday Mar 12

lifting/strength (pilates) 51:00 [1]

Tuesday Mar 11

road/trail run 23:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
I was planning on doing a long run with a threshold run in the middle of it. After school today I went to visit my old school where I worked last year. I picked up a letter of recommendation from a teacher and stopped by to drop off my resume with the principal. It turns out that they are interviewing tomorrow and he wants to squeeze me in. He had me call my current principal from his office to ask if it was ok. So I am to arrive tomorrow morning and they are going to squeeze me in some place! I'm excited to have the interview, but I don't feel ready for it! When I interviewed at this school last year he told me that I needed to improve my interview responses. Well, with only one night to work on it, and also finish my paper for class that is due Wednesday, I cut the run short so I would have enough time in the library tonight to get it all done.
C • Interview 5
road/trail run 20:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 1130
But I didn't cut the threshold part of the workout. Ran for 20 minutes at threshold pace. I had a hard time getting my HR above 180, and was running around 178 for most of the run. I just couldn't get my legs to go faster. My HR only went up when I ran up hills. My left quad is sore, especially when running downhill. And I can't seem to find a strech that streches the right place.

Monday Mar 10

road/trail run 59:30 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Run by myself around Newton. I basically ran my usual route backwards, but then ran through the park at the end instead of sticking to the roads. Ran with an old map from West Point to keep myself entertained while running.

Muscles in outer quad to knee are sore today. Just like they were before February vacation. Long runs??

Sunday Mar 9

road run 1:48:00 [2] 12.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics 1130
Long run with Dad, Hill, and Ross out in Greenfield where my grandparents live. It was a nice run, although I wore too many layers to start out with. Legs felt fine and cough has basically gone away.

Friday Mar 7

road run 53:07 [2] 6.0 mi (8:51 / mi)
(sick) shoes: Asics 1130
A run in the morning by myself. I took a sick day from work today, as I've been sick all week and talking and yelling all day in school just makes it worse. I went on an easy run to wake myself up, although had to cut it short because I really had to use the bathroom. This route was all along busy roads and through residential areas, so there was no place for an emergency pitstop!
lifting/strength (pilates) 20:00 [1]

Thursday Mar 6

road run 50:00 [1]
(sick) shoes: Asics 1130
The usual Thursday workout! Hill came along to join Dad and I today. We ran over to Westfield Street, which takes about 10 minutes, and then ran down the hill 3 times, which also takes about 10 minutes.
road run 22:00 [3]
shoes: Asics 1130
Three times up Westfield Street at threshold pace. 7:01, 7:11, 7:12. My HR monitor really wasn't working on the first one and we ran a bit too fast.

Wednesday Mar 5

road run 19:55 [3] 2.68 mi (7:25 / mi)
(sick) shoes: Asics 1130
lifting/strength (pilates) 51:00 [1]
pilates at home after my run

Tuesday Mar 4

trail run 1:20:00 [3]
(sick)
Ran on the trail with dad. I felt completely wiped, but I didn't bring my HR monitor, so I'm not sure of my heartrate. Dad and I worked on running up hills, and it was my job to keep up with dad the whole way. It was good training :) Monday morning I woke up unexpectedly with a sore throat, which is really no fun. I seem to get this throat disease at least once a year. I had it last in Australia. So before running today I used dad's prescription numbing stuff that you gargle, numbing throat lozenges, and took ibuprofen. So the throat was ok while running :)
Note
I was looking through my schedule for the rest of the spring. I have one sick day and one personal day. I thought I had to use one for team trials, but since it's within driving distance and it's a long weekend, I may not have to. So now if I can find some airline to fly me somewhere for free, I'm all set!

Sunday Mar 2

Note
I just couldn't do it today. The family went skiing all day, but I couldn't join them because of school work. Ross was going running with another guy from work at a pace too quick for me to keep up. From the moment I woke up I just did not want to go running. It was a beautiful day, but I just couldn't do it. I spent a large portion of the day agonizing over it, but I never did make it out the door. I tried to convince Ross to come and do another run with me, but he was not up to it. So I sat around all day in my PJs, did homework, played video games and ate. I know that I should have gone running, but I just couldn't motivate and so moped around the house instead. And I didn't run yesterday, and I can't tomorrow because I have class and then I am meeting friends for dinner right after.... sigh. I'm hopeless. Plus, I'm stressed out about applying to jobs for next year, and so all I want to do is crawl into bed (my strategy for when life is overwhelming).
C • Good Grief... 4
Note
On a different note, this morning I had an exciting moment. I pulled a quarter inch thorn out of my leg from last Friday in Tucson. It was really cool, and I put the thorn on my bedside table to save, but Ross said he was going to throw it away. I'm glad it's out though, but it was painful every time I had to sit cross legged, which is a lot when you work in an elementary school.
