| track workout 7:30 [5] 1.5 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| 6 x 400 with 2-3 minutes of rest. It was not my idea to run 6 400s, but the idea was to do one more than last time. Times: 74, 74, 75, 80, 77, 75. I was so done after 3. We had 2 minutes of rest between the ones in the beginning, but then moved closer to 3 minutes at the end. I think I hit a low point mentally and physically on the 4th. My times are slower each time I do these. Maybe it's the knowledge that I have to run more of them? And the first time I didn't know what I was getting myself into. Now I know.
Came home and almost fell asleep on the couch, which is usually Ross's job. But then I made myself get up, shower and I made coffee. Now I feel awake, although a bit jittery :)

| Dad and I drove over to Blue Hills to run hills on the Blue Hills access road which is paved and runs up from the bottom to the top. We went for a trail run to warm up.
I bought more plane tickets today! I have been stressing out about buying them because prices are going up and times are not what I wanted. But I just sucked it up and bought them so I can finally sleep at night.

| road run (hills) 32:00 [5] | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| 4 times up the Blue Hill access road. Times: 7:53, 8:14, 7:53, 8:09. I was daydreaming on the second one and so pushed hard on the third, trying to get close to 7:30. Although I was working hard, I still only tied the first time. Then the fourth one I was pushing just as hard, and slower still! But I guess that means it was a good workout. | ||

| road biking 1:31:00 [2] | ||
| Went for a bike ride with dad. The weather seems to have jumped from early spring to summer with it being humid and hot today. Biked around after dad and my legs were burning going up hills. We had to stop for awhile at the end as they were filming a movie in Wilson Mountain and they closed down the road. Then they would let 10 cars through and close the road again for another 5 minutes. | ||

| Fresh Pond Sprint. Spent a lot of time looking for #2, but it was hung on the opposite side of the tracks, and the feature it was supposed to be on didn't exist. Will have to compare splits with Ross to see how much time I really spent standing around. Otherwise, I felt tired. | ||

| Wandering around on the model map for warmup. It's rockier than yesterday and the mapped boulders seemed very small. I was worried about having to find one of those on an empty hillside and reminded myself to pick safe routes with good attacks! | ||

| I really enjoyed running this course. I was relaxed and didn't freak out on myself when I chose the wrong route to #7, the first long leg. I didn't really choose any route, which was the problem and I just made it up as I went along, which led to a mess of a route.
The first control was nice and easy, which is a great way to start a course. I was moving along quite well in the beginning, although still stopping completely to read the map. I don't think I really noticed I was doing it at the time, but looking back I remember how often I stopped. Actual inability to read the map on the run, or just lack of confidence? I missed #9, even though I ran up the hill on the trail, and came rigt under the cliff. I drifted too low on the hillside, pushed down by the junk and steep slope. Stood for a bit below the control so sure I was in the correct reentrant. I was - just too low. Should have stayed above the cliffs before it. A bit of trouble finding #13 after coming off the campus and was a bit high as I almost rean to the wrong control. Last control was tricky - opposite of the first control! After a bit of confusion I just ran towads the field and then towards the end of the chute. I'm happy with the race and the fact that I made no big mistakes, but I have to work on my flow while executing a leg so that I can actually run, instead of constantly stopping.

| Middle Distance Race at Team Trials.
Middle distance races are certainly not my favorite and I especially seem to struggle during this race on Team Trials weekend. I knew it would be technical so I resolved to be slow and careful. This plan worked fairly well, although I baubled a few controls and lost at least 30 seconds (1 I missed and hit the swamp beyond it, 5 I also missed and had to cut back through the green, 9 I overran and had to stop at the top of the steep bank before turning around and finding it behind me). I also ran about 30 seconds up the trail the wrong way after crossing the road to #11. I really missed #6, coming off the spur in the wrong spot and crossing the stream only to hit the vege boundary. Even once I knew I was there I still had trouble and I ended up going back to the stream and attempting to find the bend. I didn't find the bend, but I found the hill and small pond to the west of the control. I lost about 2 minutes there. Despite all this, I feel ok about the race because I never had the completely lost with no way out feeling that I have felt in my last few races. Eveyone else had trouble too so I ended up finishing well despite all the mistakes. On a positive note, I was much more in control than in the past, even though it meant giving up a lot of my speed. I find myself having to stop to look at the map - maybe I need glasses?

| road run 15:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: INOV8 Mudclaw | ||
| Walked up the hill to the start and got there pretty early. Then ran back and forth between the start and the parking lot and did some strides. Legs felt tired - especially on the uphills. Good thing it was a downhill sprint! We watched everyone leave the start to see which way to begin. Hill ran straight and pretty much everyone else did as well. We thought that Pavi would look at her map before blindly going where everyone else went, but nope! She set off running in that direction before she even turned over her map! | ||

| Team Trials - Sprint
Arriving in the early afternoon and went out to the model. Hill and I walked around as I was too lazy to put on running clothes. We tested out some routes by walking separate ways. Also noticed that I am too short to cross the "crossable" walls in most places. Ross said he vaulted over it, while I attempted to get over it at running speed and had to haul myself up on my stomach and, very gracefully mind you, fall over the other side. Yeah, it was faster to go around :) The sprint was very fun and just what you would expect from a campus sprint. Even knowing that I could get trapped I ran into 2 traps. On the way to 5 I didn't notice that the wall went all the way around, although even if I did I would have gone that was anyway, so I only lost time there in hesitation. Then I didn't noticed that you couldn't get in fronm the back on #14, so I quickly changed my route to go through the building via the stairs. But when I ran in where the stairs were supposed to be all I saw was straight wall. I stopped, checked the map, moved closer, checked the map again, and then must have moved in a way where I could tell that the wall wasn't actually one solid wall, but had a break in it where the stairs were. I was apparently not the only person to do this, but lost 30 seconds on bad route and standing around. Then I ran right by the stairs going to 15 as they were inside the building and it wasn't what I expected it to look like, losing another 30 seconds. A few other iffy route choices and Hill creamed me by 2 minutes. Still lots of fun, as I love tricky urban sprints. I just need more practice!

| Dad and I went to Regis Colleg to practice rough compass in thick terrain. Either the map we were using was off or we are really bad at following rough compass. After trying a few points we gave up since we were missing some by quite a bit. Let's hope it was the map. | ||

| Hill, Dad and I went to Prospect Hill to run an old sprint course. We only had one 1:5000 map, so Hill and I shared and did sprint memory-o and dad copied the coure on an old 1:10,000 map. There was one long sprint leg that I had trouble memorizing and had to check the map part of the way through. And it didn't start pouring until we were done! | ||

| Sprint at Franklin Park. Arrived fairly late, so just jumped out of the car and started one minute behind Hill. Slowly caught up to her as the sprint went along and had a possible better route around the pond to #6. Close behind her and took a faster route to 9 and got ahead, but then missed the control and she was in front of me again. It was good to have someone else running beside me to focus on my own orienteering. | ||

| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| This time we ran 5 400s in order to one up last week. Ross did suggest that we do 6, but after 4 he thought 5 would be ok.
Times: 71, 75, 75, 78, 77. Harder than last week and slower too. I think running them in the afternoon instead of in the morning had something to do with that. 2 minutes of rest between each one, except 3 minutes before the last. Felt harder than last week.

| Putting out more controls this morning and then picking them up. I got so lost hanging a yellow control this morning. I didn't bring my compass and was spacing out and ran up the wrong trail. I managed to hang the control on a feature that looked like the correct feature (I was actually off my map section) and started running down trails to my next control when I figured out things didn't make sense. It took me awhile to figure out what I did, since I really thought I hung the control in the correct location and I just could not figure out what was going on. Eventually it dawned on me and I had to run back, take down the control and then hang it in the correct location.
The meet went well. One control may have been hung in a wrong reentrant - some people thought it was, others thought it wasn't. But it was close enough that everyone found it fairly quickly. The only other complaint/mistake was that I hung one yellow control on the west side of the boulder instead of the east side like the clue said and that made the control too easy. But that was the control that I also hung somewhere else on the map at first, so I think the wrong side of the correct boulder is an improvement. Thanks to my family and Ross for helping. I realize that when I volunteer my time, I really also volunteer theirs - and they do it without complaining! (maybe they're just used to it by now...)

| Hanging out controls in the morning for my meet tomorrow. Out in the woods longer, as I didn't think it would take so long to hang them, but trying to figure out which side to hang it on and then what to hang it on took longer than I thought. | ||
Friday May 16 | ||
| Note | ||
| I graduated today! I attended my graduate school (Wheelock) graduation and now have my M.S. in education. The best part was eating Thai food with the family and Ross afterwards :)
I was planning on hanging controls for my meet at Blue Hills on Sunday. But last night when I was planning on driving to the storage locker to get controls, I found out that it actually closes at 7. So dad and I drove there today after graduation and during rush hour. By the time we got back to Dedham it was cold and rainy and I didn't have all my courses planned anyway. So hanging controls will be tomorrow morning, in place of a track workout, and then mom's throwing me a graduation party (even though tomorrow is also her birthday!). Plus, mom and dad bought me a new camera for graduation, which is just what I needed and not what I expected - the best type of gift! All in all, it's been a good day (minus the rush hour traffic). :)

| Since Tuesdays are half days, Dad and I drive the hour out to Beech Hill to run an old green course. Got stuck in stopped traffic on the way there (car fire) and thought the sprint started at 6 (it was 6:30), so we only ran one course. It turns out we had about an hour to kill when we got to the sprint. | ||

| Threshold run. Running to the end of the Wilson Mountain loop and back again. TIme halfway was 13:52, which is a good times. The whole time there I was reminding myself that it was downhill on the way back. My legs were tired, but it felt good to run. I don't feel worn down like I did a few weeks ago. | ||

| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Woke up early (8am is early for a Sunday) and dragged Ross to the track for our first track workout of the year. We jogged over to the Newton South track, which took us 14 minutes to get to, and then 17 minutes to return from. We were tired :) | ||
| track workout 4:56 [5] 1.0 mi (4:56 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Asics 1130 | ||
| Decided to do some 400s for speed. I told Ross that my plan was to run 4 400s in 80 seconds and he said that wasn't enough and it was too slow. I thought it sounded just fine. But I ran them all behind Ross and so ran harder than I would have alone. Times: 72, 74, 75, 75. Running all out - the 200 splits were 34, 34, 36, 36, respectively. About 2 minutes in between each 400. It's amazing how good the first 100 can feel and how bad the last 100 can feel. I'm not sure what would have happened had I tried to run a 5th. I felt a like sick to my stomach after the 4th. I think in order to get a reasonable close time on the 5th I would have had to have more rest. Maybe next time we'll find out... Funny to think about how hard these were, and what I would expect to run if I were racing in a track meet. | ||

| Dad, Ross and I met up with Cristina at Prospect Hill for some orienteering. Ross and Dad planned out a course with 21 controls. We started at unknown intervals, then all ran and met up every 5 controls. It was a fun way to constantly be running with others and racing to be the first one to the point. I was the first one to #5, even after going to 5 before 4. Then Cristina beat us all to #10, as Ross and I were standing around totally in the wrong spot. Ross got to #15 first and dad was first to the finish. It was all very fair :) Beautiful weather, which was a change from the rain that was predicted. | ||

| Waited for Ross to come home from work because I really didn't feel like going out in the rain by myself. Met Ross at Hammond Pond. We decided to run an old night-o course that was set, although flags and the like are no longer out there. | ||

| I was behind Ross until #4 where I ran down the wrong trail, and then hesitated at the wrong feature. Proceeded to "find" #5, only to realize as I was leaving it that I was way off. Took awhile to relocate, and managed to get rather lost a few controls later, and completely blew by the last control. Ross beat me by 6 minutes.... and I spent a great deal of time standing around. Not the physical workout that I wanted it to be, but it was good orienteering training... although I should probably sit down and figure out what went wrong, because I'm really just training bad habits. | ||

| No running today. Spending the afternoon in the library trying to concentrate but getting very sidetracked by things like attackpoint. If I get enough work done tonight then I think I'll have time for a quick run tomorrow. Of course that means getting back to work... soon... Having the whole afternoon really just means I can waste more time. I can't start working hard until I only have an hour left and about 2 hours worth of work. Then it all gets done :) | ||

| I feel sort of like a bum not training two days in a row, and maybe not training e days in a row next week, but I really don't think this will affect me in the long run. This weekend is going to be all about clean races, which means keeping my head up and simplifying my routes so I can keep a steady pace the whole way. | ||

| No running today. I am entering final crunch time for my graduate presentation on Wednesday and I still have a long way to go. So no running today, something tomorrow before going to West Point, but nothing hard. Then orienteering this weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to get a run in Monday and Tuesday, but that depends on how much I get done! A low point in training, but since I feel so out of whack anyway, it may not matter. Then after Wednesday it's back on track! | ||
