Uh yeah, it was pretty bad. After taking so much time off of any running to "heal" my ankle and then coming here and running for two days in terrain I was beat during the sprint. Quite tired running. I was worried that I went the long way to #4, as I was so busy reading how to get in and out of the stadium for #3 that I didn't look ahead. Therefore I began running right towards the uncrossable fence. Was going alright after that, slow speed, but not making any large mistakes. Then I ran right by #10 and out into the field. I couldn't figure out what I did and tried to relocate by finding the fence on the map, which I did but it didn't help me too much. Finally realized I went too far and ran back into the woods. I found the vegetation hard to read here. Then on the last control I was all ready to run to the top of the ramp and only turned at the last moment to run under the bridge. I had a reasonable goal of top 30, which I didn't make. And I hoped for a top 20 finish with a solid run, but even without my 50 second mistake I wouldn't have made it. Not fast enough today.

Orienteering 49:01 [2]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
Running around with Hill on the model map. We never found one of the controls because the terrain was so crappy that we just couldn't get through it. Nettles and thorns and ferns over our heads. Bad footing, too think to run and no visibility. Hope there isn't too much of this in the middle...

Event: WUOC 2008

Orienteering 40:00 [2]

First day in Tartu. Went training this morning with some other teams. Since we signed up late we got a photocopy of the map. I wouldn't want to race in this version, but training on it was fine. Woods are thick everywhere. Fields are especially bad. Ankle was sore after running, but held up ok while out in the woods. I am careful when running on it and certainly run a bit differently because of it, but I think it will be fine for racing.
Orienteering 20:00 [3]

Running a sprint that Hill planned out on the sprint map right by our hotel. The park is very cool and fun to run through. The slopes were steeper than I thought they would have and I should have taped my ankles or worn o shoes. My ankle was really sore and tired when I finished. I also managed to DSQ myself since I jumped a wall :) It was totally jumpable. Which is not the point, I know.

Saturday Jul 26

Note
So I twisted my ankle a little bit more than halfway through the relay. It rolled over and hurt a whole bunch and I knew that it would be bad. But then as I approached control 11 I stopped noticing the pain. After I drew my course and stood up I remembered it again. I went to the emts and the wrapped it and sprayed cold stuff on it. It hurt for that day, but has been getting better since then. I tried to run the sprint at WC, and I'm not sure if it was really my ankle that slowed me down or my inability to navigate. So I haven't run since Tuesday, which will have some interesting results for the rest of my full summer. I'm planning on running once I arrive in Estonia and then out in Wyoming. The swelling has gone down, but not gone away. I can put weight on it just fine, but it's uncomfortable to run on.

C • WUOC Sprint 1
trail run 34:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Tried running for the first time since the sprint. Ankle was painful the whole way, although runnable with a slight limp. I suppose this is progress from the first day.

Tuesday Jul 22

trail run 15:00 [2]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
Long run to the start of the sprint. Sandra taped up my ankle nice and sturdy. Somehow I managed to lose my compass at the prestart. I had it.. and then it was gone. Still has not turned up.

Really wanted revenge after the WOC sprint, but didn't get it. Botched #1 b over running it and taking a long time to figure it out. My ankle was sore the whole way through and I felt like I couldn't put weight on it. Then made another mistake on the short leg to 12 when I ran to every building but the right one. Another crap race for the summer. And I won't be running any more of the WC races in an attempt to heal my ankle before Student Champs where I'll be running the sprint, long, middle and relay.

Monday Jul 21

Event: Oringen 2008

Sunday Jul 20

trail run 10:00 [1]
warm up
Orienteering 48:42 [5]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
The relay started really well for me. I did very well on the first controls. They were all short legs and the leaders didn't get a chance to pull away. On #6, I ran by a control that I didn't think was mine, went a bit further, thought maybe that was mine, went back, it wasn't mine, and then continued down the nose to my control. I looked up to see no one around, paniced that I lost the pack, and ran like a mad woman towards #7. As I emerged from the green I could see everyone on the hillside in front of me. One of the forkings was higher up in the hill, and I think they pulled people up, so I managed to catch up to the back of the train again. The long leg was... long, and although the pack stretched out, I was still with many people. Then we went straight through the green to #9. This was a bad idea and the 5 of us lost the people in front of us. Then 3 of them had a different fork and it left just Pippa from Great Britain and I. I missed the control by a bit, but it wasn't too bad. On the way to 11 is where I managed to really mess up my ankle by rolling it inwards while running on the side of a broad hill. It hurt and I knew it was worse than the usual roll, but I actually managed to forget about it by the time I was punching 11. I could see Japan and Estonia ahead of me, but then I really messed #12, the TV and water control. I left and still could see Japan, but then again botched #13 and was alone on my fork. Was all alone looking for 13, but managed to find the cliff in the green, although slowly and hesitating the whole way. Finished 18th, which wasn't the top 15 as we were hoping, but I think it would have been difficult to stay in the top 15, even if I didn't make the mistakes. After drawing my course I found Ross who found the EMTs and they wrapped my ankle and sprayed cold stuff on it, although there was no ice. Hill gave me piggy back rides for the rest of the day :) We had a good, solid relay run. Not spectacular, but no blow ups from the 3 of us. I am surprised that we finished lower than previous years, but I really do feel that the competition was harder this year.

Saturday Jul 19

road run 40:00 [2]
shoes: Asics 1130
Run with Hill on the roads in the evening. Spectating the long final during the day.

Friday Jul 18

Orienteering 35:00 [2]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
Training on the relay model map. They didn't have the controls out yet for the relay, as most people are out training for the long final. But Sandra, Hill and I ran around and found all the control sites - even the dark green in light green, which is questionable. The dark green is thicker than the light green, but neither look fun to run through. And there is zero visibility - it's all pine tress and tall grass. Slow running without being able to see anything except what is right in front of you. What I would imagine night orienteering is like.

Thursday Jul 17

Note
Spectating the middle. A long day with both the middle quali and final in the same day. But a good game of 6 person hearts filled most of the time in the middle, even though Lieke throughly showed the Canadians and Americans how the game is played. It rained through all of the quali races, but then was quite nice during the men's race. Started to get chilly by the end of the women's race, but it was was worth it to watch all the races.

Wednesday Jul 16

trail run 10:00 [1]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
Running to the start of the spectator races.
Orienteering 41:00 [3] 4.9 mi (8:22 / mi)
shoes: Falcon O shoes
WOC spectator race. Wasn't really in the mood to go in the morning, but it was a short drive and I'm glad I went. It was nice to just run and not worry about pushing hard all the time. When I wanted to slow down, I did. And when I wanted to run faster, I did. No pressure :) Despite this I still missed 2 controls, one in the green and the other because I just wasn't paying attention. A fun run at a good feeling pace.

Tuesday Jul 15

Orienteering 56:12 [5]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
0-2 in WOC qualis this year. Had a bit of trouble in the beginning on #3 and #4. I went in too early on the green and a girl who started 2 minutes behind me caught me. I attacked a bit high on the hill to #4 and even though the hill was going down to my right I stood there for a bit before it really sank in where I was. I did well after that, running cleanly to each control, although not running a straight line to #9 - I still found it with no troubles. I decided to take the trail to #11 to ensure i would find it. I turned on the wrong trail at the junction and attacked off into nothing. Figured it out when there was nothing there, cut back to the correct trail, hit that and hard to run down a ways before cutting in again in the correct spot. That silly mistake cost me the most time, probably about a minute and a half. Finished in 10th and listened to my name roll down to 17th.

Monday Jul 14

Orienteering 40:00 [2]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
Running around on the long model with Hill. Woods are nicer and vegetation is mapped much better than the training maps.

Sunday Jul 13

Note
Mispunched. Checking my codes but it was close enough and I was moving fast enough that I didn't notice. On #12 I went to 53 instead of 52. At the speed I was going I had about 50 seconds of "extra" time that I could have used to relocate and still qualify... if I had only realized I was in the wrong spot.
C • That's it? 2
road/trail run 15:00 [2]
shoes: INOV 8 Muclaw 330
Warming up for the sprint and some strides.
Orienteering 12:01 [5]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
Really fast, really hard, really good... until I punch the wrong control. I was essentially perfect except for that one tiny little mistake. Having a great race, pushing hard - maybe too hard. I checked my codes leaving 11 to double check 11 and to read the code for 12. I was looking for 52, but I saw 53 when I came around the building and I just ran right to it. Read 53 and completely thought it was my code. It was on a bush (looked like a tree) and it was next to sand (as the "pond" was filled with sand), and so it was good enough for me. Punched it without a second thought and ran on. The should haves and could haves and how could I are still running through my head and I wish with all my might that I had realized it and relocated. Still can't really believe I did that and completely ruined an otherwise great race.

Sprint race through the busy city of Brno. Made one really really bad route choice that cost me tons of time.

Wednesday Jul 9

Note
Got a really fun cold. Been sniffling and coughing so decided to stay home today and rest and get extra sleep. Hopefully it'll be gone for when I start racing.

Another spectator race. Much better, although not great. Went very slowly to find all the controls. Time is a guess

Thursday Jul 3

road run 15:00 [2]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
Running over to the start of the middle spectator race. It was the women's A final course.
Orienteering 39:58 [4]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
Really shaking course. Had so much trouble finding the controls in the beginning. Got a bit better in the middle, and then made a really bad parallel error going to one of the controls at the end.

Wednesday Jul 2

trail run 30:00 [2]
shoes: INOV 8 Muclaw 330
Went with Kat to a JWOC training map that had a ski slope so I could run hills. 15 minute warm up and 15 minutes of jogging down the hill in between.
trail run 14:00 [5]
shoes: INOV 8 Muclaw 330
Running up this hill 6 times. Times were: 2:06, 2:10, 2:19, 2:16, 2:22, 2:28. It was getting hard, even when I got more rest between the last 2. About 2-4 minutes of rest between each one.
Orienteering 50:00 [2]
shoes: INOV 8 Muclaw 330
Kat was still out running so I went out to find some training controls while I was waiting for her to get back.

Tuesday Jul 1

Orienteering 1:06:00 [2]
shoes: Falcon O shoes
Running around on the model map. Really fell hard on my hip and was limping for the rest of the day. Still sore when I push on it weeks later, but I think it'll heal up.
