Sunday Mar 4

trail run 15:00 [1]
jogging to the start several times. The first time I was checking to see if they had clothing drop. It was chilly this morning!
Orienteering 1:23:25 [4] 10.32 km (8:05 / km)
I was really not looking forward to this 10.whatever course, but I felt pretty good the whole way. I again messed up #1. Again because I was somehow getting confused by my compass. I recovered when I hit the trail and continued fine after that. I took the trail when I should have taken the road to #3 and I took a pretty bad route to #6 (was I the only one who decided to cut through the woods and not take the road?). I think I was getting tired near the end and I took a long route to #11 by heading towards the wrong side of the hill and having to curve around. Then of course I fell into the steam and got wet up to my waist while trying to cross the "crossable" part. (I did find the right spot, I just didn't manage to stay on my feet). The numb legs made me run around on the trail to #12.
But :) it went well and I was pleased that I recovered, again, so well after #1.

Orienteering 25:00 [1]
jogging/walking with Ross to pick up controls. Ross just wouldn't run.

Sunday: Red F21 - Splits

Saturday Mar 3

road run 10:00 [1]
warm up laps around the parking lot. My stomach felt funny.
Orienteering 37:44 [5]
Well, this was quite a race :) I really blew #1, and Pavlina (who of course randomly started 2 minutse behind me) caught and passed me at #1 without me even seeing her. Although she claims to have seen me running by lower on the hillside and though, "No way could that be Sam." Oh, but it was. After #1 it went really well, with only one error when I overran #4 and had to go back (the control was in a ditch and I was too high up the hillside to even see the ditch behind the fallen tree).
I slowly started to pick up speed after #1, and by #5 I was moving along confidently. I punched #6 right behind Pavlina and got ahead of her at #8. It took a lot of willpower to keep moving and not look behind me to see where she was! My legs felt dead tired running into the last control, but I'm happy with how I was able to get back into it after missing #1.

Saturday: F21 WRE Red - Splits

Friday Mar 2

Orienteering 30:00 [2]
I jogged around the training course on Friday afternoon. I realized that the controls we hung low because of the SI stands, and they were quite impossible to see unless you were directly on top of them (since they were often in ditches or behind dot knolls).
trail run 15:00 [1]
warming up before the sprint. Ross and I jogged to the start and realized the starts were delayed, so we jogged around a bit more.
Orienteering 17:37 [5] 2.59 km (6:48 / km)
Friday sprint down in North Carolina this weekend. BEAUTIFUL weather there. I didn't want to come home. THe sprint was fun, and I had no major erors, just missing #7 a bit high, like everyone else seemed to. It was hard to keep the legs going fast the whole way. I still can't believe Ross beat me by so much....
Orienteering 20:00 [1]
control pick up with Ross. Unfortunately, we lost a SI box. Luckily, we went out the next day and although it wasn't at the control site, I retraced our steps and found it lying in the forest!

Long Sprint - Splits

Tuesday Feb 27

Orienteering 47:30 [3]
ran an o course that Dad designed in the Blue Hills. Dad started a few minutes ahead of me, and I caught him around #5, but didn't really manage to shake him for the rest of the course. I was practicing the memory and simplification that I have been working on, but it's a lot harder to read a head when you're actually navigating at the same time (when we practice, dad and I trade off legs leading). Plus the ground is rocky and slippery (I fell 3 times and will have some nice buises tomorrow). But it went well. I'm not really fast at this point in my season, and so I have to remember to take it slow when racing this weekend.

trail run 10:00 [1]
Running to and from the start/finish.

Monday Feb 26

road run 40:00 [1]
Running to, from and down Westfield Street Hill
road run 14:17 [5]
Twice up Westfield street hill. Couldn't get the HR monitor to work at all the first time up and I think I ran too fast. I tied it on me tighter (knotting the elastic band) and then it was tight, but still only kind of worked the second time. Times: 700 and 7:17.
