Training on the relay model map. They didn't have the controls out yet for the relay, as most people are out training for the long final. But Sandra, Hill and I ran around and found all the control sites - even the dark green in light green, which is questionable. The dark green is thicker than the light green, but neither look fun to run through. And there is zero visibility - it's all pine tress and tall grass. Slow running without being able to see anything except what is right in front of you. What I would imagine night orienteering is like.

Spectating the middle. A long day with both the middle quali and final in the same day. But a good game of 6 person hearts filled most of the time in the middle, even though Lieke throughly showed the Canadians and Americans how the game is played. It rained through all of the quali races, but then was quite nice during the men's race. Started to get chilly by the end of the women's race, but it was was worth it to watch all the races.

WOC spectator race. Wasn't really in the mood to go in the morning, but it was a short drive and I'm glad I went. It was nice to just run and not worry about pushing hard all the time. When I wanted to slow down, I did. And when I wanted to run faster, I did. No pressure :) Despite this I still missed 2 controls, one in the green and the other because I just wasn't paying attention. A fun run at a good feeling pace.

0-2 in WOC qualis this year. Had a bit of trouble in the beginning on #3 and #4. I went in too early on the green and a girl who started 2 minutes behind me caught me. I attacked a bit high on the hill to #4 and even though the hill was going down to my right I stood there for a bit before it really sank in where I was. I did well after that, running cleanly to each control, although not running a straight line to #9 - I still found it with no troubles. I decided to take the trail to #11 to ensure i would find it. I turned on the wrong trail at the junction and attacked off into nothing. Figured it out when there was nothing there, cut back to the correct trail, hit that and hard to run down a ways before cutting in again in the correct spot. That silly mistake cost me the most time, probably about a minute and a half. Finished in 10th and listened to my name roll down to 17th.

Running around on the long model with Hill. Woods are nicer and vegetation is mapped much better than the training maps.

Mispunched. Checking my codes but it was close enough and I was moving fast enough that I didn't notice. On #12 I went to 53 instead of 52. At the speed I was going I had about 50 seconds of "extra" time that I could have used to relocate and still qualify... if I had only realized I was in the wrong spot.

Really fast, really hard, really good... until I punch the wrong control. I was essentially perfect except for that one tiny little mistake. Having a great race, pushing hard - maybe too hard. I checked my codes leaving 11 to double check 11 and to read the code for 12. I was looking for 52, but I saw 53 when I came around the building and I just ran right to it. Read 53 and completely thought it was my code. It was on a bush (looked like a tree) and it was next to sand (as the "pond" was filled with sand), and so it was good enough for me. Punched it without a second thought and ran on. The should haves and could haves and how could I are still running through my head and I wish with all my might that I had realized it and relocated. Still can't really believe I did that and completely ruined an otherwise great race.
