7 PM

Running 1:00:00 [2] 6.2 mi (9:41 / mi) +70m 9:21 / mi

Third outing of the road shoes since I bought them last Aug (though technically not on road). Exploring towards meal bank with Wil and Lizzie. Absolutely baking!

kayaking 40:41 [2] 3.5 mi (11:37 / mi)

Monday night is paddle night! Out in a carrot with Martin on his first go on a surf ski. He was motoring (faster certainly better for stability - he got that one sussed!). Lovely evening for a paddle and starting to feel like I'm getting some sort of paddling form back too!

Running 2:02:20 [2] 5.8 mi (21:06 / mi) +1071m 13:24 / mi

After waiting for the mizzle to clear we were rewarded with some good weather and great views. A hilly one to check out some approaches to Fairfield (includes some standing still and staring at lines time). From dunmail up Dollywagon, Fairfield and Seat Sandal. Wil's half and half ascent left of the tarn was faster than mine and Helen's left of the tarn and straight for the top. Only right of the tarn left to check out....

Finally starting to feel like I'm back on it a bit with running, climbing well and have a reasonable trotting pace. Perhaps I have this peaking thing down to an art....

Walking 2:49:54 [1] 9.0 mi (18:53 / mi) +730m 15:05 / mi

Walk from Longsleddale with Wil and Dad - Shipman Knotts, Kentmere Pike, Harter Fell, Adam's stone, Branstree and back. Windy on the tops but a nice day otherwise.

10 AM

Running 1:05:37 [2] 6.6 mi (9:56 / mi) +257m 8:52 / mi

Scar run with Sal - nice and steady - really muggy and legs pretty tired. Success as it meant no knee pain for Sal as we barely went over the 1hr limit her knee can take.
1 PM

kayaking 30:01 [2] 2.4 mi (12:30 / mi)

Quick post lunch cruise around the islands with Sal :-) Wet but braving shorts was a good idea - really warm!

Mountain Biking 2:05:47 [2] 19.3 mi (9.2 mph) +814m
shoes: Chiru Pulse 29er

Good ride with Sal - hitting all the climbs/descents from Brathay by going across the valleys not along :-). Brathay, Claife, Fox's, Grizedale, Coniston, Brathay.

Was going well until coming out of Grizedale I felt something wrong with my back brake after a very abrupt stop on a technical climb....The one remaining bolt (oops) holding my rear brake on was no longer holding my rear brake on....it also turned out to be too short and the thread into which it was secured had sheared to half way down.....fastened it onto my frame with zip ties and carriend on through lawson park to Coniston with only a front brake. Here we bailed on the road back to Brathay.

Not sure if this is an easy fix or not - could be a problem as a carbon frame but hoping to get a new thread, remove the old one and secure it in...with glue? Can't afford/don't want a new frame - I love the chiru!

Hmmmm - not my week for bikes!
7 PM

Running 1:02:45 [3] 5.4 mi (11:37 / mi) +150m 10:42 / mi

Pre pub run with Wil, Kris and Adam, not up winder! Over towards Dent and back. Still struggling with breathing when putting in effort to run up hills but other than that felt ok.

Tuesday Jun 23, 2015 #

Note
(injured)

Bruised and road rashed - at least I missed my knee so my leg bends :-)
7 PM

cycling 1:41:46 [2] 22.9 mi (13.5 mph) +540m
shoes: Specialized Gerolsteiner

Lovely evening for a ride - out with JK to Sedbergh (where I subsequently hit the deck hard enough to knock my brake leaver out of place and road rash my leg....) and back.

Midges out in force!

Sunday Jun 21, 2015 #

4 PM

cycling 2:06:39 [2] 30.8 mi (14.6 mph) +775m

Team cannondale (riding Helen's bike) over to Kirsktone, down the struggle and back over troutbeck.

Really nice ride - legs feeling fine (nice contrast to last Sunday) and good natter of course! Really tempted by a Cad10

9 AM

Running 5:45:27 [2] 17.1 mi (20:12 / mi) +1819m 15:11 / mi

Todd's BG Leg 3. He was up by 7 mins at Dunmail and going strong over to and through the Langdale Pikes. Small mess up of Rossett but back on it to Bowfell. Then a slippy slidey rock hopping section to Scafell made things a little slow going. Left Todd belly flopping broad stand and headed down to Wasdale to set up the change over and await him and Wil who was rope man on Broad Stand. Great effort to finish in 20:56 overall!

cycling 1:29:42 [2] 21.3 mi (14.2 mph) +324m
shoes: Specialized Gerolsteiner

Ride to Wilfs where we met Sabs for lunch - good catch up with JK.

Monday Jun 15, 2015 #

6 PM

kayaking 51:13 [2] 3.7 mi (13:50 / mi)

Monday paddle in a sea kayak

Sunday Jun 14, 2015 #

12 PM

cycling 1:33:12 [1] 18.7 mi (12.0 mph) +203m
shoes: Specialized Gerolsteiner

Spin around the upside down lollipop with Sal's friend Lou. Generally feeling exhausted so incredibly steady (glad Lou is normally a Fell runner/mtber rather than a roady!). Legs not too bad and probably did them some good. Cake to finish :-)

Saturday Jun 13, 2015 #

Note
(injured)

Rolled L ankle twice coming off Yewbarrow due to not being cautious enough with the heavy pack. First time was a bad roll - irritated Tib Post. Highlights there is still plenty of strengthening I could be doing.

Knee niggle on the steeper descents as was definitely running a bit wonky on it from there on in.
3 PM

Running 5:56:23 [2] 22.1 mi (16:08 / mi) +2460m 11:59 / mi
shoes: Aisics Fell Shoes

Leg 4 and 5 with Rich T on his awesome 18:28 BG. He had the pacing nailed, steady away but at a decent pace all the way to Kirkfell, taking 18mins off his schedule to here. Then once honister was 'in sight' he beasted Great Gable to honister - making his support crew work. Arrived about 25-30mins up at honister.

Almost didn't continue as was pretty dehydrated from the most humid of conditions (2 of the 2.5L of water I'd carried were not for me obviously). Downed a bottle at Honister, transferred kit and then threw caution to the wind and carried on. Thankfully the steaming pace was reined back in until portinscale at which point my watch min/mile started with a 6 and I dropped back, arriving a min or two behind at moot hall. Give Rich sight of a finish line or a chance for a sit down and he's off!

Note

No TT today - rode to Douglas and wandered round the paddock, got new pedals for will after he snapped an egg beater, pootled around the sea front then took the scenic route back to the campsite along the coast to Groundle Glen - over the excellently named 'bibaloe beg road' and through Onchan then Hillberry back to Strang.

Packed up tents and rode to Douglas to catch the ferry fully laiden again.

16.6miles with 375m of ascent.

Wednesday Jun 10, 2015 #

Note

Lazy day - watching TT at the railway so only 2miles riding with 50m ascent.

Met friendly Welsh people and 'timebomb' Tim who had had an impressive crash in the TT 5 or so years ago!

Tuesday Jun 9, 2015 #

Note
slept:2.0

IOMTT - ride with mega weight to campsite, ditched the weight and pitched the tents and then back to Douglas, picnic shopping and off up to watch the TT at Hillberry. Back down to union mills for practice laps then back to the campsite.

15.4miles with 340m ascent

Monday Jun 8, 2015 #

6 PM

kayaking 47:13 [2] 4.1 mi (11:31 / mi)

Carroting on Windermere, bit of a faster pace down the lake than I've done yet this year so was feeling it a bit but great to be out after a stressful day.

Saturday Jun 6, 2015 #

12 PM

Running 1:35:35 [2] 6.1 mi (15:40 / mi) +662m 11:43 / mi

Run from Honister to attempt to watch Ennerdale, the shortened course was even shorter this year so missed them as they didn't get to moses trod. Wind really strong!!

Back via Green Gable, Base Brown, Brandreth and Greg Knott recceing some of Adams lines.

Friday Jun 5, 2015 #

10 AM

Running 5:34:03 [2] 20.1 mi (16:37 / mi) +2358m 12:11 / mi
shoes: Aisics Fell Shoes

Decided it was time to do some recceing and try and decide how much I want to give this a go. BG leg 1 and Leg 2 (until the clag was so thick and the rain minging enough that I wasn't learning anything and dropped down by Watson dodd).

Got round Leg 1 in 3:28 including holding back on Skiddaw, faffing with poles and relocating some walkers who were a bit lost off the back of Blencathra.

Generally feeling pretty good considering yesterday I was comatose! Started to feel a bit more knackered as the wind got up on Leg 2 and clough head is still my nemesis. Bailed as I knew I wasn't learning anything, was still tired from the last few weeks and also wanted to be able to enjoy going out running with Dickinson tomorrow!

Wednesday Jun 3, 2015 #

7 PM

Running 54:42 [3] 3.3 mi (16:35 / mi) +340m 12:33 / mi
shoes: Aisics Fell Shoes

Helm Reps - wussed out and went for Russ' group.....then actually worked harder than I have this year as it turns out I was fastest and therefore cracked on to keep it that way! Feeling reasonable for the first time at a reps session, think the longer recovery allowed any breathing difficulties to be kept more at bay so could push harder on the reps. Legs battered at the end.

Note
(rest day)

After 2.5 years of progressively increasing asthma medication, getting nowhere, being incredibly unpredictable with how I can/can't run and ride, trying multiple 'speacialists' - today it is confirmed that asthma is unlikely as a doctor filmed my vocal cords closing (as opposed to opening like a normal person) as I breathe in.

The team at Preston have been really impressive so far, and were very clear that they did not expect to see anything today as I was not exercising while they filmed. Non the less, exercise or not my vocal cords don't behave. I guess I'm just used to it day to day and my oxygen demand for walking round is met given I'm generally fit (plus they don't close hugely whilst I'm sat still).

Next step is to repeat with me cycling on an exercise bike - plus a lot of other physiological measures of respiratory/cardio/muscular performance, a service they deliver for elite athletes within Royal Preston Hospital (actually amazing - I'm not being told to sod off and stop complaining as I'm clearly able to function day to day/ appear normal compared to the average population - something to be learnt by the Lancaster Infirmary). Can't come soon enough!
