Note
(rest day)

Was going to go to track but thought better of it and by the time I'd bought rewaterproofing stuff and done bike mechanics there was no time for a swim.

Running 1:00:00 [1]

Photo Shoot for Trail Running Magazine, good fun and the weather accommodated both summer and winter shots :-)

Note

Great weekend, also finally feeling like my shoulder and back are behaving enough to run :-)
11 AM

Mountain Biking 1:20:27 [2] 4.16 mi (3.1 mph) +690m

Ride from Glenridding with Ant, Claire and Ruth. This is the part before my watch battery died. From Glenridding up and over white side. Quads a bit sore and bike heavy! Saw loads of people recceing world trophy trial route, tempted to go and play next weekend.

Mountain Biking 1:25:00 [2] 5.75 mi (4.1 mph) +255m

Ride from White Side, to Helvellyn. Plan was to do the dodds but weather was foul, hail and wind. So dropped back to glenridding. What a descent :-)! Time estimate from Ants watch

Running 3:00:00 [2] 10.2 mi (17:39 / mi) +765m 14:19 / mi

BG Leg 5 support. Me and Gaz carrying wils stuff made the bag slightly lighter. The pace also lighter by this point :-). Set off 15mins ahead of Sarah but she was going well and almost caught us by Robinson. Wil put in a burst of speed when we hit the track to the road, then once he knew he was going to do it was content trundling along. Sarah came steaming past just before Portinscale. They both finished around a minute apart in ~23hrs45. Great going!! Nicky Spinks also broke the womens record coming in 2 hrs later in 18hrs12!! Awesome!

Running 5:03:03 [2] 14.22 mi (21:19 / mi) +1742m 15:26 / mi

Bob Graham support for Wil and Sarah. Leg 2. I had wils food and after they didn't have enough water on leg 1, I was carting 4L. Wils food back also contained a fruit cake and bag of assorted cake and thats before the rest of the food and kit. I know why supporters are refered to as cart horses now, never carried so much before :-) They were going well the whole way and tried to kill me and Nick with their pace up Fairfield, coming into dunmail bang on schedule after misty nav/rain and visiting Dollywagon 1 and Dollywagon 2.

Result! My legs do not hurt after running yesterday. 3rd run lucky clearly! Good job or leg 2 and 5 of the BG on Fri/Sat could have been fun....
6 PM

Mountain Biking 1:30:00 [3] 13.8 mi (9.2 mph) +552m

Bike Tree Ride. Up Limb Valley, Down to the parks, up bastard hill, lady cannings, ox stones, houndkirk, blacka (devils elbow), pub and back. Really good to be out riding in a big group :-) I know what rolling resistance means now though, my specialized has lots of it!

Time and distance a bit of rough estimation..

cycling 1:59:21 [2] 27.24 mi (13.7 mph) +591m

Lovely ride in the sun with Claire, from Totley down Frogatt to Bakewell and back through Chatsworth and up from Baslow. I now have a 28 instead of a 23 casette on my bike, woooo!

Mountain Biking 1:58:38 [2] 14.7 mi (7.4 mph) +512m

Ride with Rach FR, James and Becky. Out through the parks, around Lady Cannings/Ox Stones, down to sheephill road and back via parks. Legs feeling so much better on a bike! First time bastard hill felt 'easy'...well not as harsh as I remembered!

11 AM

Running 1:46:16 [2] 8.65 mi (12:17 / mi) +350m 10:55 / mi

SPOOK girls run from Ladybower. Over to back tor and back along the res after bit of cross countrying through boggy tussocks. Legs great on the up but the most crippled I've ever made them on anything else, especially down hill. All of a gentle 4.5miles! At the point of not able to walk down stairs...

I take back anything I ever told my cycling friends about leg recovery from running. I am truely a cyclist...this could be painful!

Friday Jul 20, 2012 #

6 PM

Running 45:26 [2] 4.94 mi (9:12 / mi) +190m 8:13 / mi

Run with Zanthe, nice to be out with other people running again :-). Over to the stables, up a path to a57, up the steap steps, skirted the golf course and back. Was feeling good for 30minutes then back collapsed a bit. Might need to do a series of 20-30min runs to build it up...

Yoga 1:00:00 [1]

My lat back was back to square one today, only missed one week of yoga!

6 PM

cycling 53:58 [3] 13.03 mi (14.5 mph) +352m
shoes: Specialized Gerolsteiner

Ride out to Bamford fully intending to race Bamford Carnival Race. Saw Killian doing hill reps en route. Got there faster than I thought I would so beat Wil who then turned up without my kit...ah well...fail...too cold to ride back by that point...

Also made the decision to change my gearing. I will be much faster with a couple of lower gears! Felt really hard on the hills after having only ridden my mtb for a while!

Note

One presentation given :-) Travelled back from Liverpool.

Just realised there are no iminant deadlines that require impossible quantities of work and potentially Bernards Watch to complete. This is the first time since well before christmas this has happened and I am enjoying it already. I'm going to lie down then training will commence again tomorrow :-)

Monday Jul 16, 2012 #

Note

Travelling to Liverpool early. CIMA launch day 1: lots of presentations then straight off for dinner before practicing presentation. Again, no time...The whole training thing has gone out the window...

Sunday Jul 15, 2012 #

Note

Travelling back from Taunton. Then finishing CIMA presentation and meeting Eugene, then packing for CIMA. No time...

Saturday Jul 14, 2012 #

Note

Shelf and Lorna's Wedding. Fantastic day, including classic village fair games such as whack the rat, wellie wanging and shooting knomes with air rifles (completely safe with gun in one hand, pimms in the other). Followed by a barn dance then disco set by Wil 'Fro. Might have counted as training if not for all the wine...

Friday Jul 13, 2012 #

Note

Sorting out CIMA presentation and wedding stuff then travelling to Taunton

Travelling back from France. 12hrs

Note

This week I have learnt I can ride a bike fast atm. I can also nav fast atm, but if something goes wrong my concentration goes. I am not good with star junctions (although a new compass may correct that), need to practice nav properly before the next big races..although they aren't until 2013 so plenty of time!
9 AM

Mountain Biking warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Warm up needed today!

MTBO 1:33:51 [4] 17.7 km (5:18 / km) +100m 5:09 / km

Well, would be a shame to spoil it with another good ride. Set off and was hesitant to 1, got it, smotth through to 5, then a miss of a track cost me less than a min, 8 was the big balls up, biggest of the week. Turns out compass completely broken but I was still blissfully following it!
Actually got completely lost...lost about 10mins.
Would have been ok if 9 had then gone well, but tracks on map not on ground. Another 3 mins lost.10 and 11 ok, then 12 was ridiculous. I could see the control but the track was so indistinct I couldn't find its start. Ended up riding round to its other end to get to the control, at least 5 mins lost. Not happy at this point! Smooth through to the last control where I lost almost 3mins in full view of everyone. Map now 180degrees in the wrong direction, tool.

Ah well..

Mountain Biking warm up/down 10:00 [2]

10 AM

MTBO race 1:36:30 [4] 20.0 km (4:50 / km)

WRE number 2! I've misplaced the splits, distance a guess, but finally a good ride! Loved the head to head aspect. Up to 6 was flying, hot on Ingrids heals going into 6 I think. small mistake cost me 3-4mins there due to planning ahead and puzzling over OOB area. School girl mistake! Lost time (1min?) to 7 as well taking a safe route due to questionable OOB. Turned out not OOB. Lost time (1min?) to 8 using the none OOB. Settled down again after that. Smooth for the rest except the penultimate control when head to head with Pippa for the second time in the race. Rode to the wrong last control and happened across mine by accident on the way to the finish. Another minute or so lost. Scrappy but best result of the week. 9th

Monday Jul 9, 2012 #

10 AM

MTBO race 36:34 [4] 7.5 km (4:53 / km) +50m 4:43 / km

I'd rather not talk about it..Probably my worst spring mistake ever.
Going to 5 I counted the star junction in both directions, my counting agreed and yet I still ended up down the wrong track. Completely writen off in one control...about 6minutes lost (Although Ursina lost almost twice this at this control). Another small mistake with Pippa and Ingrid, riding down an OOB track and having to retrack at 8. 1min lost. After this rode like a punter.

On the plus side I can definitely track stand punch, all but 3 controls done today :-)

Mountain Biking warm up/down 10:00 [3]

4 PM

orienteering race 8:10 [4] 1.5 km (5:27 / km)

Orienteering Triathlon. My first bit of good nav of the week. Clean run :-). Pippa came off the swim in 2nd, Charli biked around to keep us in touch and I caught up a couple of places to finish 4th overall, 1st girlies team. Pipped by Duncan on the last control!

Sunday Jul 8, 2012 #

9 AM

Mountain Biking warm up/down 8:30 [5] 2.5 km (17.6 kph)

Not the ideal start to the day, they hadn't given me or Pippa a WRE start time. This resulted in me being told at 9:20 that my start time was 9:39, 2.5km away.... At that time I was wearing flip flops and not biking kit. A quick dash back to the car and transition and at 9:29 I set off for the start! Made it with about 1.5mins to spare. Adrenaline pumping!
2 PM

MTBO 1:20:54 [4] 15.9 km (5:05 / km) +220m 4:46 / km

Set off ok, first couple of controls a bit slow due to legs a bit heavy, but then got going again! Kept it together for 9 controls today. I think this is where my compass started to break as it told me I was riding down a track 45 degrees to the one I wanted, so at the end I corrected for this (as there was a track on the map that fitted the bill)...as it happens no correction was needed and I lost 2-3mins riding a daft way to 10.

Next the curse of the first starter....the track to 11 was virtually invisible so played it safe and rode 2 sides of a triangle to reach it. About 1 min slower?

12 fine.

13, curse of the early starter again, one of the tracks was overhung and not obvious so miscounted at the star junction. 2 mins lost. No more mistakes but the adrenaline wore off and left me moving slowly 15-17. Perked up a bit for the last few controls. Just a bit slow overall today.

2 PM

MTBO race 1:10:05 [3] 14.9 km (4:42 / km) +130m 4:30 / km

French 5 Days - Day 1:
Was going well to number 5, riding fast and navving ok. 5 was in a quarry and I found Charli here looking in the same place as me - there was something odd with the map/control circle, lost 3:30. Not happy with that control but set off to 6, only to find mapping and actual tracks on floor hit and miss. More tracks on floor than map. Ended up on something I knew wasn't right but hacked out to main track and back in to 6 - smoother than the others with me and arrived at 6 first of the small group I was with. Another 5 mins lost.

Think my head had lost it after that, not riding as fast through 7-14 as total write off already. Bad route out of 9 but otherwise nav good and got a few track standing punches in. Then disaster at 14, this time nothing to do with the map, everything to do with concentration. Another 2-3mins lost riding 2 sides of a triangle.
Thought I'd finish it off in style with the age old mistake of hammering it to make up time. Lost another 3-4mins on 15 being a tool.

Hammered it to the finish, stopping for a quick superman impression, but no more mistakes...

Disappointing start to nav but riding well.

Mountain Biking 3:35:56 [2] 20.46 mi (5.7 mph) +1046m

Ride with Nick, Ben, Julia and Ruth from Castleton. Over Rushup Edge, Pennine B'way, Down to Hayfield via mt famine col and christines gate. Lunch at Rosie's caf, then up and down Jacobs Ladder, up to hollins cross and back down to Castleton.

Awesome route, its amazing what a difference a proper nights sleep made (first proper nights sleep since Mayhem....may be why I was still feeling pish yesterday), feeling normal again! Also so chuffed to ride all of Jacobs Ladder first time, on sight. One dab right near the bottom, doh!
