San Francisco Night and Day Challenge. Louise and I went considerably further than planned. (Distance is what we ran, not the straight line distance between controls.) Mostly running slowly, a little bit of walking. Way too much pavement. Quite chilly, especially when running into the brisk W wind.
We scored 420 points for 1st place in the 3-hour Veterans Mixed division. Our route was 22-36-74-34-75-43-76-21-23-35-26. Route was rather inefficient as we improvised on the fly since we were covering more ground than expected. With a good route, probably could've picked up another 120 points (54, 52, 27 - we actually ran right by 27 but at that point we were only concerned with how to get across the Hwy 101 construction and get to the finish).
We had a considerable number of objectives in mind before starting, some of which were in conflict with one another:
1. Get in a 12 mile run as Louise's final long run before her half-marathon in 2 weeks.
2. Run on part of the half-marathon course, most particularly the part with the big hill up to the Presidio.
3. Keep our running to two hours (i.e., not overdo it by running for 3 hours).
4. Stay off pavement as much as possible (which the half-marathon course purports to do).
Once we started, two other objectives were added:
5. Get out of the wind.
6. Get as many controls as possible. (We avoided some temptations here, but it wound up playing a bigger role than we meant it to.)
What became apparent going to the first two controls was that the map was not very accurate regarding off-road terrain. The street map was fine. Alas, the trails in Golden Gate Park are not shown, so we wound up on pavement even there.
We definitely over did it. I was never anywhere near oxygen debt, but my legs started wearing out. Both of us had sore knees and very tight calves and hamstrings by the end. Hopefully, we'll recover after a few days rest.
