Running (Distance/Intervals) 45:55 [3] 4.83 mi (9:30 / mi)
shoes: Kayano XVIII

Los Gatos Creek Trail. 39 degrees at outset, sunny. With Phillip for first 2.8 mi. Since Phillip ran a marathon last Sunday, we start off at 10+ min pace. On the way back, at the 4 mile pole on the creek trail, I accelerate to 8 min pace for 1.5 miles. Eased back for the next 1/2 mile (and coasted the last .1), but might've been able to hold the pace for a good part of that if I needed to. First time in a long time that my legs pushed me to a pace where the breathing was the limiting factor. A big part of these recent good runs is that (for some unknown reason) my Achilles is nearly pain free.

Start and finish at the overpass behind California Cafe

Strength exercises 1:15:00 [4]
(injured)

Pilates mat exercises interspersed with theraband and hip exercises, followed by weights. Couldn't lie flat due to the return of vertigo, making the mat exercises a little more difficult. (And had to skip Norma's pilates class.)

The usual weekly accumulation of morning stretching.

Running (Easy distance) 57:13 [3] 5.8 mi (9:52 / mi) +80m 9:28 / mi
shoes: Kayano XVIII

Lake Ranch Reservoir, with Louise. 47 degrees, thick fog makes it feel colder. This felt very easy; could've run much faster or much longer, but this was a good, easy workout, which was the objective. The usual 4.0 (first two miles and last two miles) in 38:53 was quite respectable. [First mile plus last 3 was 38:29]. My achilles feels amazingly better, almost normal. Louise stayed with me for about 3.5, finished :49 back.

Ran to end of lake (as usual), back to 1 mile mark, then back to end of lake, and finally all the way back to start. Usually think of this as a 6 mile run, but in truth the 1 mile mark is really about 1.1 miles, so the portion we covered 4 times is really only about .9, making the total 5.8 (equivalent to 6 if you take into account the hills).

Walking 32:00 [2] 1.6 mi (20:00 / mi)

Leisurely walk in light rain on Skyline with Louise.

This morning, vertigo returned. Yesterday while doing weight lifting, my neck felt sore - dunno whether that had anything to do with it. My neck feels much better now; we'll see what happens when I try lying down tonight.

Running (Easy distance plus) 45:55 [3] 5.1 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: Kayano XVIII

Lake Ranch Reservoir, with Louise. 50 degrees, sunny; after several days of heavy rain. We started off pretty fast (because we were chilly) and I felt quite good, so half way through I picked up, really without very much effort. Felt I could have gone considerably faster. Best I've felt in a very long time, even though my legs and back were a little sore from shoveling up leaves and branches around the house.

Splits for 5 mile run (which meant going to far end of lake, back to near end, back to far end, then finish). Also did a :53 loop back (to let Louise catch up) at the one-mile-to-go mark. (Louise ran a fast 37:47 for the usual 4.0.)

Usual 4.0 in 36:19, just 7 seconds slower than when I ran with Ramsay on Feb 3! The last two miles were faster than any run here in at least the last two years, I believe. (See 11-19-06 for a considerably faster 4.0 in 34:55.)
