Running (Threshold) 44:03 [3] 4.72 mi (9:20 / mi)
shoes: Kayano 19's

Los Gatos Creek Trail. Planned to do a track workout, put when we got there, there was a big track meet going on, so drove over to Old Town and ran from the usual Sat AM spot behind Calif Cafe. Stayed on the southern part of the trail, towards Lexington Dam: went to the bottom of the big hill (0.5 mi mark). back to the 1.5 mi mark, back again to 0.5, then back past 1.5 and finish at Old Forbes Mill.

Modest pace for the first 3.4 miles, but really picked it up 1.33 miles. For that last segment, I was 1 sec faster than the Resolution Run on Jan 1 first this year, and 4 secs behind the Resolution Run of 2013, including 7:53 from the 0.5 mi mark to 1.5 and 7:22 pace from 1.0 to 1.5. (This segment is slightly downhill.)

403 - 1.5 mi mark, approx .39 mi (:50 at dirt trail by mill)
513 - 1.0 mi
511 - 0.5 mi
443 - 1.0 mi
440 - 1.5 mi
456 - 1.0 mi
456 - 0.5 mi
412 - 1.0 mi
341 - 1.5 mi
227 - end of dirt trail, approx .33 mi (by old mill)

Eased off just a little on the last split, so maybe it's a drop less than .33.

Running warm up/down 6:30 [2] 0.4 mi (16:15 / mi)
shoes: Kayano 19's

Cool down. Did have a bit of a warmup jogging over and back to the Coffee Roasting Co to use the restroom.

Stretching 2:00:00 [1]

The usual weekly accumulation of morning stretching.
3 PM

Basketball 12:00 [3]

JCC. My best session at the JCC to date. Actually swished a couple of 16 footers and made driving layups on both sides of the basket.

Strength exercises 30:00 [4]

3 pullups, 8 bar dips (both season's bests) and the usual machine, core and weight exercises. Only two sets of core. Moved up the weight on almost all the others.

Orienteering 35:48 [4] *** 2.6 mi (13:46 / mi) +130m 11:55 / mi

Paso Nogal (Pleasant Hill). Ran the 3.2/180 Brown course (set by Geoman) from the Jan 26 training event. No controls, put I feel pretty certain I found the correct feature (some doubt about #4). Lovely day, mostly sunny, high 60's, light breeze, the hills are all green, ground is soft and fun to run on, no nasty vegetation. Felt like a slug, especially on the uphills, but (with the exception of #2) navigated very well and did very little stopping. Made about a 1:20 error on #2, changing my plan in the middle of the leg and then somewhat forgetting what I was doing before getting it straight. On #4, lost :10 - :15 trying to ascertain which tree was the correct one.

A fine day of training. Wish I could do something like this once a week instead of once or twice a year.

Climb was listed as 180m; I'd agree with that for a strong hill climber. For my intended route, going around some hills in a few places, it was more like 165, though with my mistake on #2 I did 180 anyway. However, my Garmin only got 125m climb, quite different.

Hadn't seen the results beforehand, but I see now that mine fits in nicely, not too far behind the people I'd expect to be behind, ahead of everyone I'd expect to be ahead of.

My route on QuickRoute. Still haven't figured out how to set up the toggle between the map with the route and the map without it.

Orienteering warm up/down 17:00 [2] 1.2 mi (14:10 / mi)
shoes: Integrators Orange

Warm up: 0.8 mi in 10:30
Cool down: 0.4 mi in 6:30

Note
(rest day)

Woke up at 2am, watched a new TED-Ed video on the Twin Paradox, realized the argument presented was incorrect, unable to sleep the rest of the night as my brain wouldn't stop working on figuring out why it was wrong.

Note

Last summer, I'd managed to do in excess of 80 pushups several times, but for the last few months, I've been stuck in the 64 - 72 range. Then Saturday I altered my breathing pattern, which changed the way I count, and suddenly it seemed like I'd done a lot of 'em but wasn't sure how many, so I stopped (even though it seemed like I could've done more); reconstructing, it seemed like I had done 82. The next day I also wasn't quite sure of the count, but I thought I did 82 again, and again it didn't seem that hard. This morning I paid more attention and I definitely did 82 (as I'm now sure I had done the previous two days), though this time it was a little harder because I was more conscious of how many I was doing. Didn't realize it was so psychological!

5 PM

Strength exercises 30:00 [4]

Club Oracle. Stayed late at Oracle at a meeting, too much traffic to drive home, so took a nap and then worked out at the Oracle gym. Was able to do my usual JCC workout, 29 sets (20 upper body, 9 core) in 30 minutes.

Afterwards, went to the BAOC Board meeting in Foster City for about an hour.

Lake Ranch Reservoir. Wanted an easy day, and that's what I did, though quads were quite tired on the uphills. A bit cool and wet, though the trail was surprisingly not muddy.

Note
(rest day)

In the morning, upper right quad was quite sore, but that seemed to get better as the day wore on.

Went out for a 15 min stroll in the afternoon, followed by a 15 minute stretching session.
