Joe Grant South (remote start, across from Twin Gates). Sunny, a bit chilly. Hills are green, ground is soft; great running except for the muddy sides of the deep reentrants. Start at 9:52.
Green 4.9 km/ 190m climb (plus an additional 250m descent). Did very well for 6 controls and then the wheels started falling off, and really fell off on the last part of the leg to #9.
Took long routes around reentrants to #1 and #4, costing me maybe 2 mins total. Had the fastest splits on #3, #5 and #6, and was close on #2. So, after 6, I was less than a minute from 1st, :34 behind Kent (the eventual winner by 6 mins) and more than 3 mins ahead of 4th.
Troubled by inaccuracies in the map, lost 2+ mins on #7 and 2.5 mins on #8. (To be fair, others found those bags without trouble, though at least one good orienteer never found #7.)
Did a fairly decent job on the first 95% of the long leg to #9, but then was faced with a monster reentrant I couldn't cross. Drifted further S than I realized trying to find a spot to cross, and after clawing my way out via a treacherous mud wall, I was exhausted - and two spurs over from the flag. I could actually see it, but thick, unmapped fight kept me from getting there. Had to climb way up, all the way to #10 before getting over to #9. At least 10 mins lost.
After punching #10, had to untie each shoe and adjust my socks: the wet grass had soaked my feet, the socks had slid down and were causing a big blister on the bottom of my left heel. (This took 2:37.) I was less than fully enthusiastic the rest of the way, which still required one more monster reentrant crossing plus dealing with two poorly mapped areas, around #12 and #13 (the bag at the latter was placed too far downhill and hidden in some bushes). But I finished.
