Note
(rest day)

Travel to Zurich. Wound up meeting Hans-Peter Stadelin on the trip to Visp and Egil Iverson on the train to Zurich! Hans-Peter is an H65 and is leading a tour to WMOC Brazil, and my friend Beat Oesch is on that tour! Egil is one of the two guys who originally mapped Joe Grant! Small (orienteering) world!

Stretching 1:15:00 [1]

The usual weekly accumulation of morning stretching.
5 AM

Orienteering race 1:00:19 [5] *** 3.0 mi (20:06 / mi) +98m 18:15 / mi
spiked:14/16c shoes: Salomon SC 3 blue

Swiss O-Week, Day 5. Trockener Steg (originally scheduled for Day 3). Spectacular setting. We went up to Klein Matterhorn beforehand.

Very little left physically, so just walked and jogged and tried to be accurate. Did reasonably well until the next to last control, where I wandered into a 4 min error. But it was fun up until that point.

Walking warm up/down 40:00 [3] 1.5 mi (26:40 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SC 3 blue

Walk to and from Finish. The uphill walk back was a bit of a struggle.
3 PM

Walking 1:20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (40:00 / mi) +350m 25:55 / mi
shoes: Salomon SC 3 blue

On the way back from the race, hiked up from Zermatt to Edelweis - steep all the way. Carrying my pack with lots of clothing.

Walking 45:00 [3] 2.0 mi (22:30 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SC 3 blue

Hike back down after carrot cake and hot chocolate :-)

Grundsee. Miserable performance. I could not move through the terrain at all. My rubber-cleated shoes may have been part of the problem, but also had nothing in my legs. There seemed to be much more climb than advertised, and far more rocks in the terrain than on the map. I was laughably inadequate to the task on this day. Had errors of 13, 6 and 6 minutes, and by the end I was staggering around in a stupor.

Actual time was 1:26. Garmin seemed to have run out of juice midway through the race, but apparently it kept recording (I couldn't turn it off) for another half hour after I finished. And I had charged it the previous night.

Walking warm up/down 1:00:00 [2] 2.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SC 3 blue

Long walk from the Gornergrat train to the assembly area. Afterwards, walked down to the gondola.

Walking 36:00 [3] 1.3 mi (27:36 / mi) +82m 23:05 / mi

Flualp passed Grinjsee to Sunegga. Battery ran out early in the walk. Spectacular terrain. GPS lasted for 30:24, 0.94 miles.

Swiss O-week, Day 2. Stafel Alp. Gorgeous getting up there, but fog rolls in before I start. Couldn't see anything in the distance; worse, glasses kept fogging up and magnifier was wet and therefore useless. Could not see the details on the map, so had trouble when the terrain was very detailed, which it was for most of the first two-thirds of the race. Finished 81st of 136. Had 6 legs ranked between 32 and 42.

Swiss O-Week, Day 1. Sprint in Zermatt. Finish 18 of 145 in H65, a pleasing result. Rain through my warm up and race, but stops afterward and becomes sporadic. Great fun (except for traversing a wet grassy hillside going to #4)! One 12 sec error, at #10.
