Running race 42:24 [4] 4.99 mi (8:30 / mi) +16m 8:25 / mi

Uvas Reservoir. Morgan Hill Sprint Triathlon. Run the 5 mile anchor leg. Official time is 42:18.
Our team came in 2nd in the relay division out of 19, with a time of 1:54:18, and we got to go up on the podium at the award ceremony. The first and third place teams were considerably younger than our team.
I ran considerably harder than in a workout, but not full out race effort. The plan was to really take it easy the first couple of miles and then see if I could pick it up. Struck up a conversation with Emily, a 23 year old doing her first tri, during the first mile (not something I'd do if I was aiming to run my best time), and then when she stopped at an aide station for a drink, chatted with a 72 year old during the second mile. (Turned out he is Robert Plant, a local legend who has won many tri's over the last several decades. Jimmy Page did not appear to be in the race.) His pace was a little too fast, though, so I throttled back a bit. Picked it up after the second mile marker, and pretty much maintained that the rest of the way, though allowed myself several sections of easing off a bit during the last mile as I was certainly fatigued and didn't want to over do it.
Hard to say what my exact mile splits were. I took splits at the race's mile markers. The Garmin disagreed a bit about those being miles; the Garmin also had me running through the reservoir. On the other hand, it was presumably an out-and-back race, with the 3 mile mark in the same place as the 2 mile mark and the 4 mile mark in the same place as the 1 mile mark - but the finish chute was at least 60m longer than the first bit out of the transition area, so the run wasn't exactly symmetric. But it's safe to say that my first mile was just under 9 min pace (around 8:51), second mile a little faster, then the last three all around 8:10 - 8:15, with the last mile being a bit slower than the previous two.
It was fun to be on a team with Todd (swim) and Philip (bike), and always nice to go up for an award, but I'd rather have been orienteering.
Note: Had to get up at 4:30am to get in there in time, but I was able to get a 20 min nap before my run. It was overcast and in the low 50's.

Nice 8 min warm up, felt pretty loose.
Belated cool down of 3 mins, and then stretching.
