Running (Easy distance minus) 9:38 [2] 0.8 mi (12:03 / mi)
shoes: Kayano 20 Blue

Front of house. Though the many sore parts of my body weren't feeling too bad, I'd already decided to rest up some so that on Monday I might be able to run a decent workout. So, didn't join Louise in going into Los Gatos to run on the Creek Trail with the run club (which turned out to be only Norma). However, feeling halfway decent, it being a gorgeous morning, and needing to move my body for emotional reasons, jogged a short loop on Skyline and then did a full lap. My back seemed to be the major restriction, so took it very easy and stopped before getting too stressed. Was a little surprised that my lap time was reasonable for a first lap as felt so slow.

Short loop: 311; full loop: 627

Stretching 1:30:00 [1]

The usual weekly accumulation of morning stretching. Not much in the way of strength exercises due to back and shoulder issues.

Note
(rest day)

Woke up at 4am with very sore shins (do I really need something else to be bothering me?!?) and that persisted all day. Finally took ibuprofen before bed and that seemed to knock out the soreness.

Strength exercises 20:00 [4]

JCCLG. Lower left back still sore, but manage to do all the machine and free weight exercises, with a little core mixed in. Didn't do bar dips so as not to irritate my sore right shoulder.

Running (Easy distance) 44:27 [3] 4.0 mi (11:07 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SC 3 blue

Lake Ranch Reservoir. Got out early because of the heat, but it was already well into the 80's. Fortunately, all but about 100m of this run is shaded at this hour. Hamstrings, knees, shins, ankles all sore from Monday's hike. Worse, I seem to have hurt my lower left back while cleaning up the pool right before we went running, and that made it really difficult to run. Might have set a PR for slowest ever on this run.

I wonder whether dragging myself through a workout under such circumstances is a plus or a minus, but I did it to keep L company, which was a good thing, because right before we started our run, a female cyclist told us a scary story about how she once barely escaped three drug-addled guys while running at Berry Creek Falls.

Just walked for a cool down. Had to park up the hill a bit because a crew was doing tree work above the usual parking area by the trail head.

Note
(rest day)

When I woke up, didn't seem to be that sore, but as the day progressed, I got stiffer and stiffer. Also, seem to have tweaked my neck a bit (maybe when carrying my new telescope out to see Venus and Jupiter [in the same field of view!] last night) and I got headaches several times during the day, which fortunately were muted when I took ibuprofen.

Note

Hike Berry Creek Falls loop in Big Basin; details in the three log entries below. We followed the Coastal Trail Runs 15K course (9.7 miles, 2500' climb) because Louise is planning on running that in a month. My Garmin reported the total as 10.4 mi with 2900' ft of climb.

Total elapsed time was 5:41 (10:46am to 3:27pm). Total walking time was 4:28.

It was 70 degrees when we started, but over 90 for the last part of the hike. Used hiking poles, which certainly helped, and hiking boots, and my feet didn't get sore at all.

Idea was to leave home at 8:30 am, but someone else had something else to do first, so we didn't leave until nearly 10. Started the hike at 10:46.

10 AM

Walking 1:45:53 [3] 4.31 mi (24:34 / mi) +214m 21:17 / mi
shoes: REI Monarchs

Big Basin: Gazos Creek (the usual orienteering parking lot) to Berry Creek Falls. The GPS track clearly has a lot of anomalies betwen split 2 (upper end of Connector Trail) and split 3 (Timms Creek Trail). Took a 6 min break at the latter, and two other short breaks totaling about 5 minutes.

12 PM

Walking 27:03 [3] 0.88 mi (30:45 / mi) +88m 23:27 / mi
shoes: REI Monarchs

Big Basin. After a 16 min break on the platform (newly rebuilt) at Berry Creek Falls, up Berry Creek Falls Trail to the next to last cascade.

Walking 2:42:03 [3] 5.32 mi (30:28 / mi) +582m 22:44 / mi
shoes: REI Monarchs

Big Basin: After a 30 min break for lunch, continue up to the Sunset Trail and then back to parking. The splits show an 11 minute break at the junction of the Sunset Trail and the Timms Creek Trail. It was quite hot along this section, even though it was mostly in shade. Legs seemed to hold up better than they did in previous hikes on this trail. Also had a couple of other breaks totaling about 5 minutes.
