10 AM

Walking 2:00:00 [3] 4.1 mi (29:16 / mi) +270m 24:18 / mi
shoes: REI Monarchs

Yosemite high country. With 20 lb pack, leave Glen Aulin at 1006, break for lunch at 12:51, with about 45 mins of breaks. The first part was uphill on a rocky trail, pretty tiring, but beautiful with lots of water falls. Turns out we had stopped about 4 minutes shy of the junction with the Pacific Crest Trail.

At breakfast, we met a UC Davis neurobiologist named Salvador Borges, who's research happened to be on the retina and sounded a lot like what Rachel is going to be doing in her new lab.

2 PM

Walking 1:00:00 [3] 2.0 mi (30:00 / mi)
shoes: REI Monarchs

Yosemite high country. Intention was to walk past Lembert Dome to the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge. But the trail signs didn't match the maps I had, and we found ourselves at Parsons Lodge, about 3/4 mi from the Visitor Center. So since we were both dragging anyway, continued on to the Visitor Center and caught the 2:50 shuttle back to the Lodge.

At dinner, we met brothers Rex and Rob, vegans, and their crew.

Stretching 1:30:00 [1]

The usual weekly accumulation of morning stretching. Didn't try to do any strength exercises while at Yosemite.

10 AM

Walking 2:04:00 [3] 3.4 mi (36:28 / mi)
shoes: REI Monarchs

Yosemite high country. From Glen Aulin to Water Wheel Falls, with just day packs. 10:06am to 12:30pm. Almost stop short at the previous falls, but identified Water Wheel by the fact that the trail rises just after the falls (there wasn't enough water flowing to make water wheels).

Spectacular view down the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne while eating lunch at the top of the falls.

Met Patrick and Gayle on the way down, and later a group of young adults from the north of England.

1 PM

Walking 1:50:00 [3] 3.4 mi (32:21 / mi)
shoes: REI Monarchs

Yosemite high country. From Water Wheel Falls back up to Glen Aulin. 1:12pm - 3:44pm. Half hour break for skinny deeping - very refreshing! Walked up faster than we'd walked down.

Shortly after lunch, on our way back, the canyon behind us began filling up with smoke from the wildfires.

Dinner with Karen and Debbie from LA.

Walking 15:00 [2] 0.75 mi (20:00 / mi) +20m 18:28 / mi
shoes: REI Monarchs

Yosemite high country. May Lake HSC. Got out of bed (hadn't slept) at the beginning of morning twilight, and climbed the little ridge just E of camp. Richard (tent mate) was up there, too, and Louise and later Rachel as well.

Slim crescent moon just below a very bright Venus, both over Tenya Lake and Cathedral Peak. Then the sun came up directly behind Cathedral Peak - even more wow!

Spent about an hour up there; did my stretching while waiting for the sun to come up.

10 AM

Walking 2:00:00 [3] 3.9 mi (30:46 / mi)
shoes: REI Monarchs

Yosemite high country. From May Lake towards Glen Aulin, with 20 lb backpack. Left at 9:38, stopped for lunch at 11::59 just shy of the junction with the Murphy Creek Trail. Mostly downhill. About 20 minutes of breaks.

Only sore muscles are on the upper outside of my quads, and only when carrying my pack uphill.

1 PM

Walking 2:10:00 [3] 4.2 mi (30:57 / mi)
shoes: REI Monarchs

Yosemite high country. Start again at 12:40. Rachel leaves us and takes Murphy Creek Trail back to Tioga Rd and her car (she needed to get back to SF). We continue on to Glen Aulin. Seemed like a long haul, but again very scenic, and arriving at Glen Aulin with its waterfall was spectacular.

Again got passed, right at the very end, by our new friends Patrick and Gayle from Folsom. Also chatted with a health inspector at the very end.

12 PM

Walking 2:15:00 [3] 3.6 mi (37:30 / mi) +300m 29:47 / mi
shoes: REI Monarchs

Yosemite high country. Carrying my ~20 lb backpack. Rachel drove to the Sunrise trailhead (W end of Tenya Lake). From there, we walked on the trail parallel to Tioga Rd for almost a mile, then crossed over at the May Lake Trail head and hiked up. Stopped for lunch early in the hike up. Not the most fun trail (very rocky) and helicopters were flying overhead frequently getting (as we learned later) water from May Lake for dousing fires.

3 hours total elapsed time.

Though the trail hadn't been particularly scenic, May Lake, with Mt. Hoffman in the background, definitely was.

4 PM

Walking 1:25:00 [3] 2.8 mi (30:21 / mi) +160m 25:47 / mi
shoes: REI Monarchs

Yosemite high country. Quickly checked into our May Lake tent cabin, #5, dropped off our packs, and headed up Mt. Hoffman. Knew we didn't have enough time to make it up to the top, but got maybe 60% of the way up, high enough to reach a terrace with a great view into the Valley, with Half Dome looming large. Alas, we also could see the huge plume of smoke from the fire somewhat to the W of the Valley.

Dinner and our first evening at a High Sierra Camp were quite delightful. Unfortunately, neither L nor I got any sleep, the 9250' elevation being the culprit.

Our 3 tent-cabin mates, Richard, Gary and Gary's wife, turned out to all have worked with Mark Blair at Lawrence Livermore!

Walking 48:00 [3] 2.0 mi (24:00 / mi) +60m 21:57 / mi
shoes: REI Monarchs

Tuolumne Meadows. With Rachel and Louise, walk from the Lodge over the back of Lembert Dome to Dog Lake. Had never been there before; it was much nicer than I expected. For some reason, I thought it was out in the meadow, not in the woods. Had lunch there.

1 PM

Walking 1:40:00 [3] 3.2 mi (31:15 / mi) +120m 27:59 / mi
shoes: REI Monarchs

Tuolumne Meadows. Walk back from Dog Lake, but detour to near the top of Lembert Dome and then to the top of Dog Dome. Actually climbed to near the top of Lembert twice, as R&L didn't follow me the first time.

About 2 hours elapsed time.

Walking from Dog Lake, gave Rachel an overview of linear algebra, something her new lab director said she should learn. Interesting how out of breath I got trying to walk and talk! That's what 9000' will do.

At dinner, met Barbara and Peter Sapienza, friends of Sharmon Hilfinger.

10 AM

Walking 25:00 [2] 1.0 mi (25:00 / mi)

Mono Lake, South Tufa. Had never been out to the lake before, only looked at it while driving down 395. Really cool to see the formations up close.

3 PM

Walking 20:00 [2] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Tuolumne Meadows. After lunch at the La-di-da Cafe in Lee Vining, drove up to Tuolumne Meadows and checked into the Lodge. Walked out passed the smiley rock to Twin Bridges and then hung out around the river for an hour.

4 PM

Walking 20:00 [2] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Walk back to the Lodge.

Note
(rest day)

Drive to Lee Vining via Sonora Pass. Hadn't been over that pass in a very long time; found it very scenic.
