Orienteering race 47:55 [5] *** 4.2 km (11:25 / km) +150m 9:41 / km
spiked:8/11c shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 2

RMOF. Twin Boulders Eastern Extension. Start 9:52. Cool at the start, but warmed up by the end.

Steadier race than the previous two days. Splits only flagged me for one error (46 seconds at #10, but that control was misplaced [which didn't affect me] and misdescribed [which did]). However, I also made half minute errors in the circle on 6 and 7. Thought 4 and 9 were my best legs and they did indeed turn out to be my highest split rankings (1 and 2). Eight of my splits were in the top seven.

Very physical day. Really tired out by the sage, and it seemed like a lot of climb. I enjoyed yesterday more.

3rd overall on Brown, way behind Glen, 33 behind John Harbuck (32 behind on the (essentially) streamered route to #1!).

Some of the diwnhills were gravelly and I had trouble in my Salomons. Thinking about my metal tips tomorrow, though if there are marshes, I'd rather be wearing the Salomons.

Running 5:00 [2] 0.35 mi (14:18 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 2

Warm up. Delayed a bit by several things so got to the assembly area a little later than I wanted, and ultimately only had time for a short warm up.

Orienteering race 37:43 [5] ***
spiked:9/10c shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 2

RMOF. Western States Champs Day 1. Eastern Pelican Bay. Start at 10:16. Warmer than yesterday.

Felt much better physically today. Cautious for the first six after yesterday. Started running a lot faster as I left six. One brain dead moment leaving 8, leading to a 1.5 minute error. Was really flying at the end.

Early in the race, got winded easily, but at the end, it didn't seem to be a problem.

First in M70, 4th overall on Brown.

Running warm up/down 6:00 [2] 0.45 mi (13:20 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 2

Warm up. Felt loose. But maybe a longer warm up would help with breathing in the rarified air.

Orienteering race 34:12 [5] *** 3.0 km (11:24 / km) +115m 9:34 / km
spiked:10/16c shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 2

RMOF Brown Middle 3.0 115 16c. Start 936. Sunny, breezy, pleasant. Physically felt much better than yesterday.

Crazy bimodal run with several excellent legs and several significant errors. In place I was too nonchalant.

Marked route to 1. Small but nontrivial error on 2. Small error on 3. Lost two minion 4, punching behind Glen (and Rich P), who started 4 mins behind me. Then caught fire, great legs on 5 and 8, led until the very end on 6 and 9, followed on 7 and 10. But then a 3 min error on 11, which was the same control as 4! Small time loses on 12 and 13. Excellent legs on 14, 15 and 16.

[Orienteering race]

Running warm up/down 7:00 [2] 0.5 mi (14:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 2

Warm up, jogging to start.

2 PM

Orienteering 2:00 [3] 1.0 km (2:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 2

Went back out to have a look at the control that gave me so much trouble. Going from 3 to 4 this time was ridiculously easy, with no pressure, of course. In my mind, there were so many rocks around when I was looking for it during the race that I just didn't know what to do. But doing it carefully now, the correct boulder seemed to be standing there all by itself.

Orienteering 40:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 2

One Cowboy Relay. Did one loop of 5 controls, then did six controls (1,2,6,7,8,9) of the final loop. Felt awful.

Orienteering 28:00 [2] 2.0 km (14:00 / km)
shoes: Yellow Falcons

Forest Meadows. On my own, walking around some of the rocky, technical parts. Legs not as spry as yesterday, shins hurting. Felt good identifying features. But can I do that well while running?

It was gorgeous and incredibly peaceful up there.

Note

Charlie and Rhonda arrived as I was checking us in to the President's House. Drove back up with Charlie, to Lights of Cheyenne, to see the mass Start for Day 1. Did a little too much walking on rough ground in sandals. Fun to see a bunch of friends. Helped Mikell a bit at the Finish, then got to relax a while and watch the gorgeous clouds.

Orienteering 20:00 [2] 2.2 km (9:05 / km)
shoes: Yellow Falcons

Flew to Denver then drove to Laramie, stopping for a spell at Remarkable Flats. Mostly walked, jogged for a minute or so several times. Lovely up there. Legs felt quite good, especially considering that I orienteered two days ago.
