Orienteering race 23:53 [5] ** 3.5 km (6:49 / km) +30m 6:33 / km
spiked:17/18c shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 3

Vasona Lake Park in Los Gatos. Orange course (most advanced offered) on newly made map by Bob Cooley. Start 11:28. Sunny, breezy.

Familiarity made it easier. 5th of 49 overall, behind only Jeff Goodwin (2036), Graham Brew, Anastasyia and Steve Gregg (2248) (though two people [Yuri Konolenko, Daniel Sebo] on Memory-O [same course] also had faster times). Ran hard, lost very little time. Using the SI Air was great.

Highest ranked split was 3rd, on #15. A little surprising because this was a longer leg. Perhaps it was because I'd made my choice of which bridge to cross (the northerly one) before I'd gotten to #14 and then executed the leg without hesitation.

All but four of my splits were in the top 9, with the following exceptions: #1(13), #4(17), #16(11), #18(12) and F(14). I guess #1, the GO control and the run to the Finish were just about running speed. The actual time losses:

#4. Stopped to look for the bag at the big, fallen tree trunks (a young woman was already looking there) and then realized the bag must be further N where the tree stump must be, so had to go back down to the paved path, go further, then up again. Lost about :15.

#16. Saw a bag across the field, near the play area, headed towards it, but as I got close, realized it wasn't the correct one, got close enough to check the code just to be sure (and my SI Air recorded the punch), saw the correct bag further S along the path, Lost about :05, maybe a few secs more.

Also lost very small amounts of time:

#2: Didn't hear the beep when I "punched" #1, so went back and swiped again. Lost maybe :03

#3: Didn't spot the opening to the path through the fight until I was practically past it. Lost :02

#10: Went first to the tree just SW of the correct one. That one was mapped as a white patch rather than a green circle [the two trees looked identical to me] so I wasn't expecting to have to pick the correct tree and so just ran to the first one I saw.

#12: Got drawn off at first by Jim Fish going down a path to the NW, then bashed through a lot of fight. Would've though I lost several seconds, but still had the 5th ranked split.

#13: Going up through the parking lot might have been a little faster, but wasn't about to take on additional climb unnecessarily.
