Thursday Feb 28

Road Bike 1:48:00 [3]41.3 km (2:37 / km)
Short Bays with some added extras. Went with Michael and Chris. We did a little side trip up Bridle Path road which is nice and steep. Then from top of Evans we went up to Mt Pleasant and home via Em's place. Food and water stop there. Nice tail wind home, was doing 47km/h for a while.
Orienteering 35:00 [4]
Pairs training out at Bottle Lake. Was pretty good, fast running but I made a slight mistake in route choice going to one of the controls and also lost contact with the map slightly on another control.

Pretty happy all up though.

Tuesday Feb 26

Road Bike 5:00:00 [4]125 km (2:24 / km)
Long Bays bunch ride then at top of Evans along to SoK then down to Governors Bays and then back around to Gebbies, up along the summit road and down Mt Pleasent and then back home around the hills at the bottom. Lots of climbing and tired legs now. Felt okay spinning up the hills but when my cadence dropped down to about 70 or less I started to struggle a little bit. Only Chris, Em and I did the extra loop.

Good to do a longer ride though.

Monday Feb 25

Short Bays with Chris and Em. Pretty cruisy although my legs still feel a little tired now.

Friday Feb 22

Tramping 9:00:00 [3]
Wandering up the hill from our campsite. Got most of the way to our climb on Mt Speight and then decided that it was all too hard, so we headed back to camp for a swim and then walked out to the car.

Walk up Waimak river bed to where the old Greenlaw hut used to be with Em.

Wednesday Feb 20

Road Bike 2:55:00 [2]58 km (3:01 / km)
Up Dyers, down around the bottom to Gebbies, up Gebbies and along the summit road and down Mt Pleasant and back around the bottom home. Pretty cruisey ride with Em which was the plan. So all good, legs aren't too tired but got some hills in.
Orienteering race 52:00 [5]
Score event around Canty Uni. Was lots of fun. Legs felt a bit flat at the start but then halfway through I eased back a bit and then they felt okay. Nacho beans isn't a good pre race meal, felt like throwing up everytime I got to a control for the first 20mins.

Made a few small mistakes but mainly due not to being able to find the control even though I was in the right place.

Tuesday Feb 19

Road Bike 2:35:30 [4]75.5 km (2:04 / km)
Long Bays bunch ride then back along the tops to SoK and down. Was a pretty fast pace out on the flat 34km/h then slightly slower around the hills. Legs felt a little bit tired on the hills, I could spin okay but they didn't have the little kick that I needed to push it on the hills. Hopefully a few days rest will fix that. Felt pretty good along the tops back at the end which was good to see.

Monday Feb 18

Short Bays with Clare and Andreas. Just a cruisy ride. Legs felt okay, only slightly tired.

Sunday Feb 17

Orienteering race 1:57:20 [4]
OY1 at Butlers Bush. Made lots of small mistakes in the open terrain. Then went well in the first part of the forest, went slow through the last half of the forest then fast at the end in the open.

Need to get stronger as I struggled running through the marshes. Also need to practice running at a higher intensity .
Road Bike 2:45:00 [2]72 km (2:18 / km)
Rode out to Butlers Bush. Very nice ride as it was a nice calm clear morning. Was just taking it easy so I would still feel good for the orienteering.
Road Bike 3:00:00 [3]76 km (2:22 / km)
The return ride from orienteering at Butlers Bush. Was downhill but into a head wind so it actually took longer than the ride out there. Went via Darfield etc to try and break up the long ride into the wind. Was really slow around Darfield. Spent about 45mins doing 20km/h. The speed picked back up to around 29km/h once I got to Westmelton. I guess the hills was blocking the wind a bit.

Thursday Feb 14

Orienteering 1:00:00 [4]
Training out at Bottle Lake. Was in pairs, I was with Joe. We both had a map with 20 controls on it and took turns going to each control. Basically you had to know where you were at all times so you could continue to your next control without having to relocate.

Was fun, Joe was flying along so I was struggling to keep up with him running wise. Then the last 15mins was just running back, went at a good steady pace back.

Wednesday Feb 13

Orienteering race 1:00:00 [5]
Street Orienteering at Lyttelton. Was a good hard run. Poor route choice at the start, mainly due to poor mapping I think. Some things also weren't that accurate it would seem. Had a pretty good route overall and seemed to run much faster than at the races last week.

Tuesday Feb 12

Was going to do long bays bunch ride but got out to Halswell and just wasn't into the ride so turned round. I think I'm quite tired from Waitangi races. Hopefully will feel more energetic tomorrow.

Sunday Feb 10

Orienteering race 1:56:00 [5]
Stillwater up north of Auckland. Was a reasonably good run but made a silly mistake. Followed Ross and James and was only half reading the map then we all got horribly lost and made a 10min mistake. Apart from that only a couple of 2min mistakes at the end and then my lack of running strength.

Lots of tough running in long grass and through thick ferns. Course got cancelled due to the first control being incorrectly placed and a large section of windfall not being marked on the map but the best route went straight through it.

Saturday Feb 9

Orienteering race 55:36 [4]
Hedley Rd map up near Helensville. Went okay but made two big mistakes and then lost motivation at the end. Pity because the terrain wasn't too hard.

Thursday Feb 7

Orienteering race 1:56:40 [4]
9km race at Aramiro with 500m+ climbing. Was going well on the first 5 controls then lost 6mins on the next one due to a stupid mistake. Was running along a track and just lost concentration and then left the track at the wrong point. Made a 5 min mistake a wee while later when I didn't read the map 100% correctly. The first map was fun but after the map swap I lost a bit of motivation and ended up walking lots more of it. Was feeling a bit tired today and really struggled to push myself and my time reflects that. Enjoyed the last 6 controls where I was racing another guy, picked up the pace a bit through here.

Tuesday Feb 5

Orienteering race 1:14:10 [4]
Loops race at Kairangi. Just an open farmland map with little pockets of bush. Was good running training, easy navigation maybe orange level. Tired me out a bit I think and I managed to get a blister on my little toe.

Monday Feb 4

Orienteering race 19:32 [5]
Sprint race at Waikato Uni. Really nice map. Made a big mistake going to #1 and lost a minute. Then a couple more mistakes lost me another minute. Was 5 mins behind winner.

Lost a bit of motivation after stuffing the first control but still enjoyed it.

Sunday Feb 3

Orienteering race 1:03:31 [4]
At Waihora with lots of small loops. Ran well but made two navigational mistakes and also forgot to punch the water control. Was very thirsty so drank straight away and then just ran on forgetting to punch.

Legs felt a bit tired today on all the short steep hills.

Saturday Feb 2

Event: Waitangi Summer Carnival
 
Orienteering race 35:37 [4]
Orienteering up by Taupo on 'Airport' map. Was pretty easy open terrain but quite fun. Made a couple of mins mistakes but not too bad for me.
Orienteering race 56:24 [4]
Night relays near Taupo. Ran the second leg, Lara put me in the front, I quickly got caught up and then made a silly mistake. Went okay in the second half with some small errors in route choice. Then light went out after 35mins so was a bit tough on the last controls with just my little light. Quite an enjoyable run though.
