| Long bays bunch ride. Lacking a bit of motivation and kept falling off the back only to decide I should really stay with the bunch and having to work really hard to get back on again. Also legs felt a bit more tired than usual. Perhaps from the weekend of orienteering or maybe because I haven't been biking enough recently. | ||
Sunday Apr 27 | ||
| Orienteering race 35:27 [5] | ||
| Flock Hill middle distance race. I had a really really good run. Didn't make any big mistakes, mainly just searching for the control in the circle. Prob 30sec each control in the rocks. Would be pretty hard to nail them all.
Carsten won in 31min15secs I think so pretty happy with how close I am to the winners time. Was really pushing it in the last 1/4. Need to practice my downhill running a bit more as I was a bit slow on this. Plus improve my overall speed/strength as I felt stuffed before I even reached #1. 6th Overall.

| Orienteering race 2:01:00 [4] | ||
| Dalethorpe race, it was the Classic distance for SI champs. 11.5km. I felt pretty tired/slow. My HR wasn't very high but I didn't seem to be able to go very fast. Lost 9mins by #4 so wasn't going too well. Made two decent sized mistakes, one on 4 and the other on 18. Just got a bit lazy with my attackpoint on 4 and then wasn't 100% sure when attacking the control. 18 I think I was tired, I went down one re entrant too soon. But looking at the map afterwards I shouldn't really have been using the reentrant for anything so a bit silly.
Seem to have strained something on the inside of my right knee last night too so that was a bit sore and I was quite careful on the rough open stuff. Carsten won in 1hr20mins
Friday Apr 25 | ||
| Event: South Island Champs | ||
| Orienteering race 17:05 [5] | ||
| South Island Sprint champs. Came 12th and had a good run. A few small mistakes but only 10-15secs max. Need to run faster as Michael Adams caught me halfway round putting a further minute on me by the end.
Cool little map too. Winner was Chris Forne in 14:55.
| Orienteering race 1:24:00 [4] | ||
| The night race. 8.4km of disaster. I managed to make it to control 1 okay. Then 2 and 3 were really bad. 2 I went to the wrong control first and 3 I had to run back to a fence to relocate.
Not sure what went wrong really I wasn't able to stay on a bearing and kept zig zagging everywhere. I was zigging and zagging both ways too. Maybe it was the narrow light beam. I didn't really feel in contact with the map either, only for very brief moments. Need to fix up my headtorch attachment so it doesn't bounce round so much. Last place I think. Chris managed about 55min I think.

| Rogaine race 6:00:00 [4] | ||
| Day 2 of the Alpine Mountain Marathon. It was a slightly shorter day today although I'm not sure how Jamie expected anyone to get round it in 6hrs we skipped out 3 controls and it would have been a good 1.5hrs more to get the extra controls.
I was a bit flat today, started out okay but slowed down after 2hrs or so, it was pretty slow going up one of the rivers, lots of boulder hopping on ice covered rocks. Cool views out towards the Arrowsmiths. Ended up 3rd overall, final standings the same as yesterday.

| Day 1 of the Alpine Mountain Marathon. It was a good day, we started at Woolshed creek end of Mt Sommers and then did a bit of a run around there before heading towards the Arrowsmiths.
Came 3rd today. We were keeping up with the others for about 3/4 of the day then dropped off a bit near the end. Phil and Ross did 7hrs and Aaron and Lara did about 7hr20min. Heartrate didn't seem to drop below 170 for the first hour or more. By the end I had slowed down quite a bit, perhaps not enough water. Our packs were about 5kg so were pretty easy to run with and the camping overnight wasn't too cold.

| Road Bike 20:00 [2]10 km (2:00 / km) | ||
| Getting deperate for some training of some sort. Starting to improve a bit but nose still gunked up. Felt really slow on my ride to Michael's place but it turns out there must have been a head wind or perhaps it's slightly uphill as I seemed to be cruising home at 40km/h.
Tested out my headtorch, it seems suitably bright for the upcoming rogaines. A bit brighter than my 35W halogen bulb but more testing will be needed to confirm if the extra brightness is useful.
Tuesday Apr 15 | ||
| Note | ||
| Indoor rockclimbing. I seem to be quite blocked up at the moment. Was climbing well or the grades are a bit easy. Managed to do the following grades.

| Control Collecting 1:30:00 [1] | ||
| More control setting for Orton Bradley event. Everything went well though and not many complaints. Actually most people really enjoyed the courses. | ||
| C • Nice job 11 | ||
Saturday Apr 12 | ||
| Control Collecting 3:00:00 [1] | ||
| Setting out some of the controls for Orton Bradley orienteering tomorrow. Was pretty cruisy the first 2hr30mins then had to speed up the last 30mins to make sure I got back before dark.
Forgot to take my compass again.
Tuesday Apr 8 | ||
| Road Bike 2:26:00 [4]76 km (1:55 / km) | ||
| ahr:138 max:181 | ||
| Long Bays bunch ride. It was pretty cruisy out to Gebbies, then fast around to Lyttleton and then even faster up to Evans Pass. Managed to hold off Aaron and Michael though so it was a good ride. 5th to top of Evans. Very cruisy back to PMH (once we jumped on the bunch). | ||
Sunday Apr 6 | ||
| Road Bike 2:54:00 [2]76.5 km (2:16 / km) | ||
| ahr:128 max:187 | ||
| Long Bays bunch ride with the old guys. Was a pretty cruisy pace. Managed to get the max HR out sprinting some other guys up one of the hills.
It's a pretty nice friendly bunch and good for a relaxing ride as the pace never got very fast.
| C • Shame we were a little late... 1 | ||
Saturday Apr 5 | ||
| Road Bike 1:36:00 [2]40 km (2:24 / km) | ||

| Short Bays with Michael and back along the flat. Took it easy although my legs felt a bit flat, perhaps just not riding for a week has done that. I felt I had quite a low cadence too.
Quite a nice ride considering how grey it looks outside.
Friday Apr 4 | ||
| Control Collecting 5:15:00 [1] | ||
| Wandering at Orton Bradley. Went to check the control sites for the club event next weekend. Map needs quite a lot of work but I'm not going to be able to do it all, will make some minor changes though.

Wednesday Apr 2 | ||
| Rogaine race 2:51:30 [3] | ||
| ahr:141 | ||
| Did the race with Clare. Was pretty good overall, prob should have gone and got another 80pts near the end but wasn't sure on how long it would take to get back. Ended up just wandering back with heaps of time.
Pity the course didn't really offer enough route choices, there was only one obvious route I could see and you could just choose which direction to do it in. It would have been cooler with a few more controls along the tops and then a few big pointers on the Taylors side at half height to force people to have more interesting routes and to break up the travelling snake of people. Came 5th I think and 4th overall for the series.
