Monday Dec 31 | ||
| Tramping 6:00:00 [2] | ||
| Day trip from Ivory Lake up Park Dome and around to Reid Lake. Went with Chris, Joe and Tim. Quite a solid pace up and then a more gentle pace until near the end. | ||
Sunday Dec 23 | ||
| Kayaking 3:00:00 [1] | ||
| Down the Hurinui with Chris, Clare, Joe and Al. Pretty easy grade 2 stuff, still managed to roll a couple of times. Pretty relaxing 3hrs not real training. | ||
Saturday Dec 22 | ||
| Road Bike 3:08:00 [3] 75.5 km (2:29 / km) | ||
| Long Bays with Chris, Michael and Em. Was supposed to be easy but we got passed by a triathlete down on his aero bars so had to chase him for a while then I decided to incite Chris into sprints up all the hills. I managed to lose them all but had lots of fun suffering. Poor Michael didn't eat enough and suffered a little bit on the last 1/3 of the ride.
Not sure why it took so long as it felt like I was going hard all the time. Guess there were lots of slow periods to recover from all the sprints.
Friday Dec 21 | ||
| Orienteering race 56:00 [4] **** | ||
| Out at Woodend again. 5.3km. Was a terrible race really, got beaten by Georgia and made several large mistakes along with lots of mistakes in the control circle. I was navigating okay on my compass bearing but not slowing down enough once I got close and then ran around lost in the control circle. My attackpoints were okay mostly but I then just charged off foolishly having no real plan.
Need to practice map reading better in detailed areas. Simplify the map better. Practice fast slow orienteering transitions as I was just fast all day until I was lost.
| Control Collecting 40:00 [3] | ||
| Control collecting from the race in the morning. Went out and collected 7 controls, hit every control pretty much exactly and I wasn't going that much slower than in the race. Felt better running too. | ||
Thursday Dec 20 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| Out at Leithfield in the really vague area on the South of the map. Was just out helping the kids again, they seem to be improving as I didn't spot many out there. Then relocation practice after that which went well. My aiming off seems a bit dodgy so should practice a bit more. Not really aiming off enough as I was hitting the controls dead on most of the time. | ||
| Orienteering race 16:57 [5] ** | ||
| Sprint O at Woodend Camp. Was tough with only an LED headtorch and made lots of small mistakes in the first half, mainly overshooting and having to backtrack slightly to each control. Then near the end I made a big mistake not concentrating on the map and terrain properly, seems like most people made the same mistake though. Came second behind Neil which I thought wasn't too bad. Probably a couple of mins mistakes all up. | ||
Wednesday Dec 19 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] | ||
| Out at Dalethorpe. Practicing contouring with the kids, they seemed to find it pretty hard. Was on the orange course again. Marten and I did the last half together and we seemed to have pretty good flow through the controls which was nice. Really good strength training running through the wet long grass in the open areas. Managed to rip the arse out of my best orienteering pants when I fell onto a barbed wire fence. | ||
| Control Collecting 30:00 [2] | ||
| Up at Flock Hill, ran in from the road and then set out the easy course up on the top of Flock Hill. Great day. | ||
Tuesday Dec 18 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] *** | ||
| Out with the kids helping them to orienteer better. It was at Spencerville so out in the sand dunes. Seemed to be orienteering okay. Was only running the orange course as I figured they probably needed more help. | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] | ||
| After lunch down at Bower Ave, first was some easy orienteering using handrails and then a Wheel O. Carsten and I were together and managed to beat those nasty Woodhill Warriors. I managed to misplace one control which caused Carsten a few headaches but other than that it was good. High intensity though, just 400m each leg so really fast. | ||
Monday Dec 17 | ||
| Control Collecting 30:00 [2] | ||
| Setting out some of the red level controls at Woodend map. Very intricate map. | ||
| Control Collecting 1:16:00 [4] **** | ||
| Night time control collection with the others at the Junior Camp. Fast running collecting the streamers in and then Carsten and I headed off to the far end of the map to pick up the controls that I had set out earlier. Lots of mistakes by me, running too fast and not being accurate with the compass. Carsten was still able to orienteer better than me even though he had no head torch and couldn't read the map, he fixed up all my mistakes. :-) | ||
Sunday Dec 16 | ||
| Tramping 1:30:00 [2] | ||
| Walk up Foggy Peak, pretty windy up the top but good views. Went with Cris, Kat and Em on our way back from our secret training mission in Arthurs Pass.
I think my performance will improve a bit this week because of it.

Friday Dec 14 | ||
| Control Collecting 2:30:00 [1] | ||
| Just an easy wander up Bowenvale and around collecting controls from the rogaine last night. Not too hard although the mud is super slippery. | ||
| Road Bike 32 [1] 13.5 km (2 / km) | ||
| Riding to and from Bowenvale carpark just nice and slow. | ||
Thursday Dec 13 | ||
| Rogaine race 3:01:00 [4] | ||
| Christmas Rogaine with Cris. Really enjoyed the rain and mist, it made it much more comfortable for running. We did pretty well although wasted a fair amount of time on #74 as we went to the location twice but it wasn't there. It was misplaced way over in another boulder field so I'm told. Also managed to miss another 70 pointer, it seemed a bit random as there were lots of rocks all around.
Felt pretty good for the whole race but only had one leppin for the race which wasn't enough as on the ride home my legs felt a bit flat. Navigation was pretty good the whole time too which was nice.
Tuesday Dec 11 | ||
| Road Bike 2:20:00 [5] 73 km (1:55 / km) | ||
| Long Bays bunch ride. Lots of people today, managed to keep up going up Gebbies and then they waited at the top for some of the slower people. Got dropped on the next hill but managed to keep about 30secs behind them and then caught up when they stopped for a minute. Rode as a bunch around the rest of the bays until Evans, took it easier up Evans and the bunch was still waiting at the top so got to ride in a bunch pretty much the whole day.
Lots of suffering on the little hills, need to work more on my hill climbing, too slow up the big hills still. Pace was quite relaxed out to Gebbies and back from Evans.

Sunday Dec 9 | ||
| Road Bike 1:18:00 [2] 32 km (2:26 / km) | ||
| Riding to and from South Brighton for orienteering. | ||
| Orienteering race 45:00 [4] | ||
| Orienteering out at South Brighton, had to get 770 points fastest kind of like a score event. Was good except stuffed up one control, not helped by the map being inaccurate. | ||
Saturday Dec 8 | ||
| Mountaineering 11:45:00 [2] | ||
| Up Rome Ridge of Mt Rolleston with Clare, Lara and Matt. Only went up to the notch then traversed across to Otira Slide as the route was quite bad with lots of loose rock. Nice relaxing day apart from the sunburn. Hard to justify 12hrs training as it was pretty relaxing after the first hour up the hill. | ||
| C • There was a bit of sunburn ... 2 | ||
Wednesday Dec 5 | ||
| Road Bike 2:56:00 [2] 47 km (3:45 / km) | ||
| Up Dyers along summit road and down to Sumner then back around the bottom. Lots of stops and ice cream, was pretty cruisy. | ||
| Running 1:16:00 [3] | ||
| From sign of the Takahe up to Sign of the Kiwi then along and up to Worsleys and back down via Vic park. Legs feel pretty tired but still running okay just not much go. | ||
Tuesday Dec 4 | ||
| Road Bike 2:42:00 [4] 76 km (2:08 / km) | ||
| Long Bays bunch ride, was going okay until Gebbies then got dropped by about 100m going up here and just couldn't catch the bunch again. Ended up going round the back by myself at a reasonably hard pace. Waited for another guy to fix a flat tire then rode with him and some others to Evans. Got dropped going up Evans and then rode back by myself. (Noticing a pattern here??)
Legs were feeling a bit dead on the hills, not sure if it's due to the weekend or just lack of hill riding. About 10mins of waiting for 2 flat tires to be repaired on the ride today.
| C • Hey Greig 2 | ||
Sunday Dec 2 | ||
| Rogaine race 6:43:00 [4] +2100m | ||
| Office Hours Rogaine. Terrible scrub bashing and a way too optimistic route caused problems. Lots of hard work for not many points. Was good weather and fun to be out though.
Felt quite good was still running well at the end and didn't feel that tired from all the hill climbs. Route choice should probably have less climbing than 2000m for 7hrs and try to avoid the scrub more. Plus should try and have a better route with more options to drop bits because we ended up pretty stuffed halfway through when we had to bash up the hill for 30mins+ to get to the next part of our route.
Saturday Dec 1 | ||
| Road Bike race 2:17:00 [4] 77.5 km (1:46 / km) | ||
| Did the Long Bays race under the assumed name Michael Smithson. Was just cruising really, took it quite easy on the flats, just stayed in the bunch and avoided the crashes. On the hills just spun up them in granny gear. Still getting lactic acid build up in my legs even though my heartrate is low and I'm not breathing hard. Hopefully this will go away soon though. | ||
