Thursday May 29

Road Bike 1:40:00 [3]43 km (2:20 / km)
Up Dyers along tops and down to Sumner. Back around on the flats avoiding the little hills.
Went up Dyers in a bigger gear than normal 20:10 to the top, not going very hard but legs felt it pushing the bigger gear. Then in 53x12 along the summit road, hardest bit is the last hill as it seems to be the steepest one.

Really nice day for it.

Tuesday May 27

Road Bike 2:50:00 [4]76 km (2:14 / km)
ahr:127
Long bays bunch ride. 50km/h on the flat on the way back (thanks to some drafting of a bus).

Felt quite hard on the hills today, I was pushing a bigger gear rather than spinning. I think it will help a bit with my strength although I was just developing a good lactic acid burn today. Probably still a bit tired from the rogaine but didn't feel as tired as I thought I might.

My blisters didn't hurt much either.

Monday May 26

Road Bike 22:00 [2]10 km (2:12 / km)
Just a little cruise out to Halswell and back. Legs feel fine although a little lacking when trying to power up the hills.

Saturday May 24

Event: NZ Rogaine Championship

Rogaine race 18:30:00 [4]
ahr:127
NZ Rogaine champs.

It was a pretty flat course with lots of road/track running so not really ideal for me. We set a pretty good pace for the first 4hrs then slowed up a bit.

I seemed to get pretty bad blisters later on which caused me to slow right down which was pretty annoying. I think I'll try vaseline next time.

Made a couple of frustrating navigation mistakes. The first one was not navigating well enough out of a control and we ended up having to bash up out of a creek we never should have been in. Then later on the same leg I didn't line everything up correctly and we ended up going one gully too far and trying to find the control.

Saturday May 17

Rogaine 15:30:00 [3]
Twalk - lots of running round the hills.

The first leg was quite nice except the first control was not there and the 4th control was marked incorrectly and was not anywhere near the center of the circle. Somehow we ended up first after this leg even though we were just going cruisy. I think it was due to Tim's ability to find controls quickly. I could get us to the control site but he always found the controls first.

The second leg was more of a running leg with lots of easy to find controls. Others found this leg a bit boring but I actually enjoyed not having to hunt for 30mins to try and find a control. The navigation could have been a bit tougher but the leg was designed for the slower teams who were doing it at night. We were still just cruising on this leg too but were still first at the end of the leg.

Leg three sucked, well parts of it were nice but we spent way to long looking for controls that either weren't there or the cryptic clue wasn't useful. Trying to find a small bit of plastic on a reed ín a gully of reeds in the dark with a clue of "where the bush joins" wasn't fun. Spent about 6.5hrs out on a course that should have been 4hrs long at the most.

Lost motivation after this stage so we had a wee sleep and then did a few controls on leg 4 before losing motivation again and heading back for a second sleep. Couldn't be bothered going out on leg 5 even though there were some easy controls.

Need to sort out my feet a bit better so they don't go so soft and somehow tape my little toes to avoid blisters.

Looking forward to next weekend, except I saw a comment elsewhere about running on roads and paths. :-(

Wednesday May 14

Road Bike 1:55:00 [2]33 km (3:29 / km)
Up Dyers along the tops and down Mt Pleasant and then along flats home. With the usual crowd. Practiced riding big gears, including hardest gear up around Cattlestop Crag.

Tuesday May 13

Road Bike 2:35:00 [4]76 km (2:02 / km)
Normal Long Bays bunch ride. Felt pretty slow up Gebbies then suffered my way round the hills until I dropped my chain. Then ended up riding by myself, a bit of a pity really as I could have stayed with the bunch today I think.

I seem to have this pain in my chest for most of the ride and still now. Not sure what it is but it isn't very comfortable and is making it a bit hard to breath properly. Hopefully it will settle itself down.

Sunday May 11

Orienteering race 53:40 [4]
ahr:157
OY3 at Acheron, ran medium red 5.9km and 160m of climb as I was a bit tired from yesterday. I think it was a good decision as 6km felt long enough and I really enjoyed it.

The map is really dodgy though, so many clearing aren't marked and the ones that are aren't any bigger or more distinct.

Stuffed up #1 as I couldn't work out why my 4WD track was marked as an indistinct track and got a bit confused. #2 veered off to the right, the re-entrant was very shallow. Then #3 came across a re-entrant and thought it was mine but I had stopped too soon. Looking at the map afterwards there is a very slight re-entrant on the map that I was in. Finally #4 was absolute rubbish, the vegetation boundary in the marsh didn't exist, it was supposed to be between open and forest but it was all open. Then near the control there were quite a lot of open areas that weren't marked. The control shouldn't really have been here or the map should have been improved. #9 and #11 also had the clearings partly missing. Lastly stuffed up #14 and #17 taking very poor route choices in the open. Probably lost a minute on each of these controls.

So overall I made a lot of mistakes partly due to the map and partly because of me. I also had some good legs but I think 45mins would have been pretty easy had I not made all the above mistakes.

Saturday May 10

Road Bike 4:39:00 [3]97 km (2:53 / km)
ahr:131
Out Chris and Em's via Michael's place, then up and along Summit Road to SoK down and around to Gebbies then up to Summit Road, back along to SoK down and around to Lyttleton, then up Evans and along Summit Road back to Sok. Then for a little extra up to the top of Worsleys Track. Finally down Dyers and home.

It was supposed to be a cruisy ride but there still ended up being quite a few sprints and fast climbs. I tried to avoid most of this but still ended up in a few sprints and fast climbs, luckly I've been feeling lazy so I dropped off pretty quick anyway.

Control Collecting 35:00 [2]
Setting out controls for the training tonight. Misplaced #1 which was annoying as it seemed to stuff people up a bit causing them to lose their confidence and get frustrated. The map also seems to be a bit dodgy in places, the boulders could really do with being mapped better.

I think I might have ended up making it a bit too hard as it required you to pretty much spike the controls to see the reflectors (or stuff up and go beyond the control).

Wednesday May 7

Road Bike 2:38:00 [2]61 km (2:35 / km)
ahr:131
Up Dyers, down and around to Gebbies, up to summit road and along to Mt Pleasant, then down and home via Chris and Em's. The ride was going to be longer but we ended up waiting so long we just came home instead. The ride was nice and cruisy apart from up to Coopers Knob and the little hill by Rapaki on the way home.

Tuesday May 6

Road Bike 2:42:00 [3]76 km (2:08 / km)
ahr:129
Long Bays bunch ride. It was a very cold morning with frost everywhere. It ended up being a quite cruisy ride, I waited for Em and then we caught up to Sia so had a nice ride around the bays and up Evans.

I think overboots would be a very good idea.

Monday May 5

Road Bike 2:37:00 [1]42 km (3:44 / km)
A very cruisy trip around short bays with Chris, Em, Michael and Neroli. Quite a chilly ride. I think I'll be looking for some warmer clothes tonight.

Sunday May 4

Rogaine race 4:00:00 [3]50 km (4:48 / km)
Mountain bike rogaine up towards Okuku Pass. Went with Clare and had a good time. Not too hard and my bike held up okay. Didn't make any navigational mistakes but it was pretty easy navigation anyway.

We got 1640 and I suspect Chris won with his 2150 or something like that.
C • 4hrs exactly. Looks like yo... 2

Saturday May 3

Note
A nice afternoon rock climbing with Clare and Cris at the Roxx.

Friday May 2

Road Bike 1:20:00 [3]33 km (2:25 / km)
Up Dyers along the top and down Mt Pleasant. It wasn't very nice. The hail and sleet began at the Sign of the Kiwi. Lucky I took some full finger gloves these kept my fingers toasty warm until we got to the flats at the end. Took about 10mins in the shower to warm up my fingers and legs before the pain stopped. And then looking out the window afterwards it was all nice and sunny again. Glad we didn't do long bays.

Felt quite slow for some reason, Cris and Michael raced away from me and I had nothing. Maybe tired from last night although seems a bit silly after a mere 45min run.

Thursday May 1

Orienteering 45:00 [3]
ahr:155
Training out at Bottle Lake, Bower Rd end. Was a good wee run in the forest at night. Big light went out half way round so had to run with leds for the second half. Went pretty well overall. A small mistake on 6 and 9 seemed a bit dodgy but found it in the end.

Felt I was running pretty good tonight.
