 | Kayaking 3:00:00 [1] | |

| Down the Hurinui with Chris, Clare, Joe and Al. Pretty easy grade 2 stuff, still managed to roll a couple of times. Pretty relaxing 3hrs not real training. |
Saturday Dec 22 |
 | Road Bike 3:08:00 [3]75.5 km (2:29 / km) | |
| |
| Long Bays with Chris, Michael and Em. Was supposed to be easy but we got passed by a triathlete down on his aero bars so had to chase him for a while then I decided to incite Chris into sprints up all the hills. I managed to lose them all but had lots of fun suffering. Poor Michael didn't eat enough and suffered a little bit on the last 1/3 of the ride.
Not sure why it took so long as it felt like I was going hard all the time. Guess there were lots of slow periods to recover from all the sprints. |

 | Orienteering race 56:00 [4]**** | |
| |
| Out at Woodend again. 5.3km. Was a terrible race really, got beaten by Georgia and made several large mistakes along with lots of mistakes in the control circle. I was navigating okay on my compass bearing but not slowing down enough once I got close and then ran around lost in the control circle. My attackpoints were okay mostly but I then just charged off foolishly having no real plan.
Need to practice map reading better in detailed areas.
Simplify the map better.
Practice fast slow orienteering transitions as I was just fast all day until I was lost. |
 | Control Collecting 40:00 [3] | |
| |
| Control collecting from the race in the morning. Went out and collected 7 controls, hit every control pretty much exactly and I wasn't going that much slower than in the race. Felt better running too. |
Thursday Dec 20 |
 | Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] | |
| |
| Out at Leithfield in the really vague area on the South of the map. Was just out helping the kids again, they seem to be improving as I didn't spot many out there. Then relocation practice after that which went well. My aiming off seems a bit dodgy so should practice a bit more. Not really aiming off enough as I was hitting the controls dead on most of the time. |
 | Orienteering race 16:57 [5]** | |
| |
| Sprint O at Woodend Camp. Was tough with only an LED headtorch and made lots of small mistakes in the first half, mainly overshooting and having to backtrack slightly to each control. Then near the end I made a big mistake not concentrating on the map and terrain properly, seems like most people made the same mistake though. Came second behind Neil which I thought wasn't too bad. Probably a couple of mins mistakes all up. |
Wednesday Dec 19 |
 | Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] | |
| |
| Out at Dalethorpe. Practicing contouring with the kids, they seemed to find it pretty hard. Was on the orange course again. Marten and I did the last half together and we seemed to have pretty good flow through the controls which was nice. Really good strength training running through the wet long grass in the open areas. Managed to rip the arse out of my best orienteering pants when I fell onto a barbed wire fence. |
 | Control Collecting 30:00 [2] | |
| |
| Up at Flock Hill, ran in from the road and then set out the easy course up on the top of Flock Hill. Great day. |
Tuesday Dec 18 |
 | Orienteering 1:00:00 [2]*** | |
| |
| Out with the kids helping them to orienteer better. It was at Spencerville so out in the sand dunes. Seemed to be orienteering okay. Was only running the orange course as I figured they probably needed more help. |
 | Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] | |
| |
| After lunch down at Bower Ave, first was some easy orienteering using handrails and then a Wheel O. Carsten and I were together and managed to beat those nasty Woodhill Warriors. I managed to misplace one control which caused Carsten a few headaches but other than that it was good. High intensity though, just 400m each leg so really fast. |
Monday Dec 17 |
 | Control Collecting 30:00 [2] | |
| |
| Setting out some of the red level controls at Woodend map. Very intricate map. |
 | Control Collecting 1:16:00 [4]**** | |
| |
| Night time control collection with the others at the Junior Camp. Fast running collecting the streamers in and then Carsten and I headed off to the far end of the map to pick up the controls that I had set out earlier. Lots of mistakes by me, running too fast and not being accurate with the compass. Carsten was still able to orienteer better than me even though he had no head torch and couldn't read the map, he fixed up all my mistakes. :-) |
