Orienteering 15:01 [5] 2.2 km (6:50 / km)
shoes: 200803 NB MT800

This race was the Hopewell Rocks sprint, a fun sprint preceding the 2008 Canadian Orienteering Championships. This race was along the ocean floor of the Bay of Fundy at low tide - unique terrain. The area on which we were running - which was about a 200 meter wide strip - is about 20-40 feet underwater at high tide.

The course itself was navigationally straightforward - the course ran linearly down the beach, the linearly back up the beach - but identifying features was at times tricky. I made two :20 mistakes at controls fourteen and fifteen, and I ran around the chute from the Go control to the finish, but I was very pleased with my race. The control density on the course was very high, and I only checked an incorrect code once or twice.

To provide a sense of scale, Holger Hott finished the course in 9:53, and Patrick Goeres did in 10:25. They're very fast. Jon Torrance, someone I encounter more often, finished in 11:14; 33% of his score on a sprint is satisfactory. Overall, I finished 12/22.
