X-C Skiing race 6:58:00 [5] 38.0 km (11:00 / km)

Snowgaine Day 2. Didn't bring the datalogger because I was convinced it wasn't working (I was wrong). So today's distance is a guess but I'm pretty sure we exceeded yesterday's distance. We chose a much more road-and-trail friendly course today. I think we could have done more with the controls we skipped on the eastern part of the map - they were the farthest from roads, but crossed virtually no contour lines. In any case we planned a perfect 8 hour course; unfortunately, with only 7 hours available that meant dropping two from the original scheme.

Oh, and there were a number of sections today that were just beautiful and sublime to ski, especially the north-south Alice's Alley. I've never gotten that sort of feeling ever in a regular running race, and if it means we just weren't going fast enough than so be it.

Finished 6th overall out of 13. Even if a few things had broken our way, we probably still would have been 6th as there was quite a gap between us and the next team.

Time to switch into running mode for the Regaine in 12 weeks.

X-C Skiing race 8:18:00 [5] 36.0 km (13:50 / km)

Snowgaine Day 1.

Teamed with Clinton Morse. I'm definitely a better skier than last year, but still room for improvement (how much through better technique versus better gear, I wonder).

I was pretty satisfied with our micro route choices, thought we could have done better at the macro level. Specifically, we gave up a fairly easy 100 points for two controls at the top of the southern map, and we were only looking at the northern map. We would get these two the following day, but obviously that would have freed us to get a different one or two.

We also sacrificed a half hour to swap skis for snowshoes, but that was something we had to try sooner or later. It felt like we slowed down after that point, but the data logger suggests we sped up. It was more effort, in any case.

We got to a crossroads with 11 minutes to the cutoff time. Just going back would have left us 4-5 minutes late. Instead we went for a low point control and were surprised to find ourselves the first team to be here all day. That made the return a lot tougher and we ended up 19 minutes late, making for a 57 minute late start on Sunday. That certainly cost us 70-100 points overall. I'll know never to make that call again.
