Pretty satisfied with today's result. If I was trying to maximize my placing, I should have looked for people a step above my ability (e.g. glent, pbricker) and just latched onto them for a while. Instead, I went out with a bunch of cadets, hootin' and hollerin'. I knew they would drop me pretty quickly, and they did, which meant that my first few controls were pretty lonely. That remained the case most of the way as I also took some safe and roundabout trail routes (most pronounced - from 7-8 and 9-10 via the northern pond). I ended up covering 3 more km than the person who finished just ahead of me. But the bottom line is no important errors, no lost map contact, and every control was exactly where I expected it to be.
Skipped #22, which took fortitude since #16 and #18 were both very enticing.
What is odd, though, is that this year I was 50th and 3 years ago 23rd with much shakier navigation.
