Rogaining race 17:30:00 [5] 20.0 mi (52:30 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 295
CNYO Rogaine with Olga Huber. Our other teammate was to be Tom Rycroft, but he dropped out at the last second due to a personal emergency. The map included 4 state forests (3 to the north, and a smaller one to the southeast) plus the usual scattering of public road intersections. The southeast forest had less relief, but trashier woods, reflecting more recent logging plus a recent tornado-like event that left a swath of broken trees. We decided to go there first, one of only 3 teams (out of 24 or so) making this choice. I thought it would take 4.5-5 hours; it ended up taking 3.5. Possibly the first time I've ever underestimated anything in a rogaine. We went back to the hash house and ate "dinner" at 330. Unfortunately, the northern forests proved far more formidable, scattered with mostly unmapped small cliffs and rock outcrops, passable but very slow. We were barely managing 1 mph. Worse, I started feeling nauseous, a sensation that intensified into dry (mostly) heaving shortly after midnight. We decided to play it safe and stopped early. After a short nap and breakfast I almost made it home by the time the race ended. First of 1 in the mixed veteran's category.
