Rogaining race 23:45:00 [5] 60.0 mi (23:45 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 295
I formed a team with Fred Pilon and Tim Conwell, who was a student intern of mine this summer. He had never orienteered before but as a member in good standing of the Grinnell College Extreme Society thought it would be a great way to spend his last weekend in New York. Fred had to bow out due to a nasty bronchial virus, leaving just Tim and me.
We started with a southern loop, returned to the hash house by 7 pm (exactly as predicted - the first time a rogaine prediction has ever come true), then were back out by 7:40 for the much longer northern loop. While we had to drop some of those northern controls, we did find every one we attempted, which I believe was a first for me.
To my pleasant surprise, we managed 3rd place overall, and far enough from 2nd and 1st that we needn't second-guess any small decisions we made.
I did unmoor a fence at one point. I lifted what I thought was a wire connecting a gate to a section of fence, but the section of fence, which was in tension and not anchored to the ground, gave way instead of the gate, opening a very large gap. As it was an interior fence connecting two cow-free pastures, it did not represent an emergency. Still, we spent 5 minutes trying to close it (we weren't strong enough), then another 5 minutes explaining it to the RD a few hours later, then another 10 minutes going back and repairing it with string after the race was over (because I guess it was my problem). I will have to add some baling wire to my kit for future events.
Quote from teammate: "It was by far the hardest physical thing I've ever done."
