XC rabble-rousing email from Cap'n Thumper ahead of the Autumn. Really looking forward to getting my teeth into the back end of the coming XC season...

...but, first things first. As I up my weekly ascent towards and past the 3000m mark, I imagine I'll be spending quite a bit of time on Blacka over the next couple of months. Went to check out a bit of the Exterminator course, thought I ended up at the wrong point but turns out that after reaching the road we do hack through a shitty bit.

Murky and blustery out.

Eccles Pike. 2nd to Matt but 1min or so behind. 30s slower than last year.

Still a great fun race if lacking the head-to-heads I've had before. Tom Wild took it on before Matt pulled out a big lead once onto the climbs. As last year I put in a big effort at the bottom of the steeper climb to the summit to catch and pass Tom. He gained a little around the summit but I soon pulled away but was still close enough to keep me fairly honest.

Drizzly weather but good for running if a bit slippery. Fair run considering Borrowdale legs.

Win hill and the breasts with a pair of tits. Nice evening if a bit breezy, felt I was moving OK and, whilst comfortable, a bit harder than I'd like this to feel, but the long road to a small tent is just beginning. Good catch-up on the summer's shenanigans. Followed by Pie and peas - my 3rd pub tea in 3 days.

Blood test results show nothing wrong with me so it was all my head.

Sale fell with Hannah and Boris. One of us enjoyed eating poo, drinking from puddles and chasing birds. Groin behaved - despite barely being able to walk once finishing yesterday it soon sorted itself out.

Borrowdale. 29th. Winner: Ricky (2:49:21, 118%)

Felt OK but legs not quite with it. A steady start up Besyboot and over to Esk Hause saw me reel in and pass a group with some good guys in it. Worked well over to Styled where, on the start of the Gable climb my L groin suddenly felt wonky and there was a bus-load behind me. Got up Gable gaining slightly on Pete Vale and Joe Baxter who were just ahead. Rich McGrath got ahead into Honister. The Dale Head ascent was really bad, Joe came past but him and Pete weren't too far ahead at the top. Mincy descent where Andy Jebb outlined us, got going once through the mines to take Chris Arthur, tried my hardest on the track but had feck all and was just at the back of a pack of 5.

Worst I've felt at the end of a race in a long time, so I got everything out despite a feeling of going through the motions. Not too bad considering how my legs felt but can do better. My end-of-race strength seems to have deserted me, but pleased how I was sticking with good runners near the end despite feeling whacked. Just did enough to hold off a biggish group.

Good support all the way around, especially from Hannah, did enjoy asking Winskill to spray all over my face though ;)

Round Buttermere for an ice-cream with Han and Boris. Felt ace last night on the drive up, felt tired for this.
