'Woodhead closed' signs - pretty sure I could drive to Crowden but decided I might as well use the opportunity to run there to warm up, and then there'd be no excuse other than to run back.

Along the road for a bit, then onto the ressers and Pennine Way.

Crowden Horsehoe (3rd ) Derbyshire Champs (2nd).

Harry Holmes shot off from the start, I climbed OK to start with and moved OK on the runnable stuff to Soldier's Lump, but Jack Ross came past - I was moving OK but evidently not very quickly. Line off very boggy, saved a bit but not moving as well on the bog/rough/downhills as I can - was caught by a Buxton as I eased across the bog. Feeling a bit tired in the head and a bit lacking in the legs.

3mins down on Harry (who did some river wading before the slabs), 50s on Jack. Pretty slow but it'll do at the moment.

Back to the car over Lad's Leap and Gravy Pud routes, with some heather bashing in between. Pretty nacked (2x9:30 kms in there) but got it done. It begins...

With Ash and Tom. Up to Kinder Low trig, then on the Trog route and back over Dragon's back. Nice.

HRM is dead, which may explain some of the readings of late.

Friday Aug 18 #

One last day off - Ankle a little creaky after yesterday but recovering well, no biggy.

I was hoping to feel completely refreshed right now, but I'm not. I think my body is OK, but I still feel pretty tired. This has to be down to PhD anxiety (12 months to go, lots of negative results [not necessarily a bad thing] - and not much statistical significance [probably a bad thing]).

Need to be much more disciplined with sleep, especially screen-time/procrastination before bed. 2 weeks building up, then 7 weeks Pre-OMM block. Run, work, Run, eat, sleep, repeat.

Pennine Sandy Heys uphill (and downhill) timetrials.

Had my excuses lined up - rest period, feeling frumpy, Hr hitting race levels on the very slow jog out - for a naff time. So to be nearly 30s inside my old best (and sneak Winskill's KOM by 1 whole second!) time was a pleasant surprise. OK there was a good tailwind and I had people to chase down but felt alright, although impetus slowed a bit at the top, taking longer to close slower runners down. Nice boost though.

Stunning orange over Manchester, and a big plane overhead, to enjoy whilst waiting.

Then did the downhill race. Again excuses lined up - rarely run down here so didn't know the line, worn shoes, and the clouds had come in with drizzle and made the light suddenly murky. Went right of the path, good to start but then got a bit choosy and I had a crunchy moments rocks/uneven ground. McTurbo got a good start on a slightly better line, but then cramped. Reckon a more left line would be quicker - still 28s off Nat's downhill KOM though.

Cambridge. Feelings of inadequacy every time I'm here.
Either Hrm is a bit iffy, or I'm going to suffer a cardiac soon. I probably went a bit too quick at times but not *this*quick.
Hopefully it's just body getting over something/waking up.
