Trekking/Hiking 3:15:00
Iris and I set off from the Rain Lake Access Point to hike the top loop of the Western Uplands trail. I'd been on the bottom section a couple of times but never been on this section. I am sold on the Rain Lake access point! It felt really remote and I loved that you could rent and pick up canoes right at the water.
We were both SO worried about the bugs ruining the weekend, but they were astonishingly absent! When we first started hiking, we thought it was a fluke, but they never really worsened all weekend. We noticed a few mosquitoes in the swampy areas, but that was pretty much it!
The first day was smooth and relatively easy, although we were both bemoaning the first day pack weight by the time we got to our site. We heard from a couple of other hikers that the first site on Brown Lake was excellent, and we were happy to get there before the other couple did (who we ran into on the trail taking a break). It is kind of crazy how much the site quality can vary. Ours was a 9/10 and theirs was a 2/3. Phew!
We had a lovely loungey afternoon setting up and enjoying happy hour. The evening was super quiet and a beautiful temperature.
