Orienteering 2:18:00 [3]

OK this is really embarassing, but I guess I have to post it. Alex dragged me to an orienteering race, which was fine cause it was a nice day to go down to Letchworth. Problem is I really suck at orienteering.

It took me a little bit to figure out what I was doing, and I ended up really missing the first control. I wandered around for about 20 minutes, even found the 6th control, but managed to eventually get the first one. I think the problem was I didn't know what the symbol meant, and if I had realized it was at the top of that dry stream bed I ran over a couple of times I might have been ok.

So it was a little depressing to mess up the first one, but I was kinda in a whatever mood anyhow. The stream crossing was fun; I totally tightrope walked over this really skinny fallen tree without falling. Nice! I pegged the next couple of controls right on and was feeling good about myself. Somewhere out there I tripped on a tree and bashed up my knee something good. I've got a huge bump on it now... dang.

There was this really steep climb we had to go over, and it started to get wet out there. At some point I went through some marshy areas, and sunk up to my knees. I thought this was bad, but it turned out Alex found some even deeper ones.

I then got every control up to the penultimate one right on. I was even faster than Alex on a couple of them that had a lot of road/trail running. Booyah! And then I ran into my big problem.

I think I was getting pretty tired and hungry out there, and this was messing with my brain. There was this control located on a rootstock in a triangle of trails. I found the triangle, but couldn't find the right rootstock. There must have been 20 fallen trees, and I scoured every damn one of them multiple times. After loosing 20 minutes to this damn control, I went back out to the road and reoriented in case I was in the wrong area. I followed the trail back to the triangle again, and still couldn't find the control. I went back out, took a harder look at my map, and then figured that maybe I was actually on a parallel trail and not really at the triangle. I was so hungry and tired I almost wanted to call it quits, but I managed to finally find the right triangle and the control was easy. Argg... I probably lost like 40 minutes here.

Anyway, I trotted in feeling pretty lame. This is why I'm better at running in a straight line.
