Hiking up Mt. Bailey with Sam and Presto!
We camped at Diamond Lake last night, which is very close to Crater Lake. It was ridiculously smokey from the two fires around Crater Lake when we arrived. We were sort of debating just scooting along to find somewhere less smokey, but it cleared a bit overnight, and we decided to hike Mt Bailey, which was supposed to have some really awesome views of Mt Thielsen.
We parked at a fairly sketchy trailhead and then hiked through a nice forest. After 3 miles or so, the volcano-ness of the mountain started to become extremely evident and we eventually came around to an awesome crater. We reached the false summit, which did indeed have really awesome views of Mt. Theilsen, Crater Lake, and the forest fires around Crater Lake, and then noticed another forest fire. A really close forest fire. A perhaps too close forest fire.
This forest fire wasn't on any of the maps that had been posted around Diamond Lake, so after some brief debating I called 911. I can only hope that the fact that I wasn't in any immediate danger made them slower to respond to my call because they spent like 5 minutes trying to figure out if I had reached the 911 dispatch of the correct county and then maybe another 5 minutes transferring me to the correct county once they realized that I was not actually in their county. Eventually I explained where the fire was, and they said that they weren't sure but that they thought it was a new one.
The summit was tantalizingly close, but since the fire was also tantalizingly close, we decided discretion was the better part of valor and scurried on down the mountain. The forest was decidedly more smokey on the way down than it had been on the way up. Luckily, we made it safely to the car. We had time for a quick dip in Diamond Lake before driving on up to our eclipse path campsite on Suttle Lake.
