Cross-Country Skiing (Classic) 5:30:00 [3] 12.0 mi (27:30 / mi)

Cross-country skiing with Sam and Presto at Hope Valley! The Sierras got like 5 feet of snow during the week, so we decided to head up to the mountains for some skiing today. We were expecting tons of powder, but it was actually kind of icy. Sadly for Presto, it was not so icy that he could just walk on top of the snow, so he was post-holing every 15-30 seconds for the first couple of miles. We debated just turning around and going for a hike somewhere below the snow line, but decided to see if it would get better as we got higher. Luckily it did!

We found some snowmobile tracks that worked quite nicely for Presto for a bit, and then got high enough that the snow was more powdery so even though we were breaking trail, it wasn't too onerous for Presto. We ended up going about two thirds of the way up Picket Peak on the trail and then headed off trail to get some more awesome views of Carson Pass. The views were quite spectacular. I think we'll come back with boots and/or snowshoes to try to summit at some point. It gets too rocky towards to the top to ski all the way up.

The way down was pretty fun, if mildly terrifying for me. The groomer finally came through when we were about 2 miles from the trailhead, so we got some faster skiing with a quite happy Presto in at the end. Fun, fun!

Stretching 10:00 [3]
