Cross-Country Skiing 3:00:00 [3] 5.2 mi (34:37 / mi)
shoes: Rossignol Backcountry Skis

Skiing back from Ludlow Hut with Sam, Tori, Carlo, and Presto! After possibly the best night sleep I have ever had in a sleeping bag, we had to ski back from the hut. The ski back from Ludlow Hut was quite a bit more terrifying than the ski there. The first section down from the hut to the lakes was all covered in trees and pretty icy because the sun hadn't had a chance to soften things up yet. I spent an inordinately long time descending about 100ft before deciding it would be a better use of everyone's time if I just walked the rest of the way down. The trail was packed enough, that I just put microspikes on over my ski boots, and had no problem walking. Sam was kind enough to strap my skis onto his backpack and ski them down for me, so I didn't even have to carry them :-).

Once we got most of the way down to the lake (maybe about a mile or so?), the trail flattened out and I was able to ski the rest of way back to the trailhead. Presto had so much fun running around on the lakes, eating and rolling around in the snow. It was super cute to watch!

The trip back was less physical work, but a lot more mental work than the trip out to the hut - trying to decide the best way down the trail without dying. We did have to take a bit of a detour off-trail at one point to get past a really steep section. But that was possibly the most fun part of the downhill, so it was all good :-). Apparently driving huge Jeeps with ginormous tires on snow-covered roads is a thing around here. It was a bit of a surprise when we happened upon a couple of them digging snow out of the way to make the trail wide enough for their trucks. None of us could quite understand what would make driving big trucks on snowy trails fun, and I'm sure our idea of fun was just as baffling to them. The rest of the ski back was uneventful and got increasingly easy as the snow got slower and slower. Super fun weekend!!!
