ARDF (80m Sprint) 28:27 [3] *** 3.5 km (8:08 / km)
10c shoes: Brooks Running 20

US ARDF Sprint Champs at Bond Park! 1st overall! Oddly (since I normally do pretty terribly at sprints) this was my best event of the weekend! I was feeling WAYYYY better than yesterday, so I'm guessing the issue was at least partially jet lag. My frequency dial got knocked in the impound, and it took me like 30 seconds to realize that I was only hearing the beacon, rather than any of the controls. I had to stop and reset the frequency dial, by which point I'd basically missed the entire first cycle. Luckily, that was only a minute. I knew that if I had a control over to my left, I should take it first since it was away from the beacon, so I headed over in that direction. The transmitter sounded like it was back behind the community center, so I ran over there and noticed a sheet hanging up by the woods. I didn't really think much of it and started running across it, and suddenly a camp counselor was yelling at me that it was a pop-up archery range. I was already part way across it, so I just sped up a bit... Oops! The transmitter was just on the other side, and luckily, my next control was in the woods, so I didn't have to run back across the archery range. Things went fairly smoothly with a bit of trouble seeing the controls (there are no flags - just poles with epunches on top), especially on the one close to the baseball field, since I didn't want to get too close to the fence and mess up my ability to get direction on the transmitters.

I had a decent enough idea of where I was on the map that I was able to mostly use trails and navigated with no issues to the spectator beacon at the end of my first loop. The finish and the spectator control were in the same place, so there were two best orders to the second loop. I went back up in the area that the first loop had been in first. This loop went a bit smoother than the first loop, probably because I'd settled into the sprint feel of things, and was a bit more familiar with the park and the map.

I definitely lost a few cycles out there circling around the transmitters a few times, and could have been a bit smoother, but in general this was one of my best ARDF sprints!
