Carquinez 10km Scramble with Sam and Presto! We got to the event a bit later than we'd hoped (although still before the mass start), and there sadly weren't enough maps left. There was a bit of switching things around before we got maps, but one of them had been used by someone that started in the earlier mass start, so the answers were already on the back, so Sam and I just ran together.

We hadn't had any time to plan anything before we started, so when the mass start happened, we frantically looked through the options and just chose a direction to go, heading for the controls in the wetlands area first. Sadly, dogs were not allowed on the trails in the wetlands, so after some poking around looking to see if maybe Presto was allowed on this trail? No. This trail? No. Sam and I split up with me getting the controls in the wetlands and Sam taking Presto around the edge and meeting me after those 3 controls were taken care of. I had a brief moment of worry when I didn't see Sam right away where I expected, but it just turned out the no dogs area was bigger than we'd thought, and I found Sam without too much trouble.

The next several controls were straightforward, if with more climb than I'd expected. We had a bit of trouble on a control where the trails were mapped as going through on the map, but in reality someone had built a fence across the trail, so we ended up having to go around. Then we had a bit of trouble where the trail wasn't exactly as mapped, and the control description was "high point" but the location of the control on the map was in a saddle... We spent too long arguing about where the control was actually supposed to be and, thus, what the answer to the question "How many boulders?" should be. We eventually settled on a answer and headed on.

The rest of the course was fairly uneventful. Apparently there is a Shell Museum (the oil company, not actual shells) in Martinez. Who knew? It is super tiny with a hilariously large parking lot. I'm pretty sure that if the parking lot was full, all the people would not be physically capable of fitting into the museum. Rex gets us to go to the most interesting places :-). Super fun!
