Skiing with Sam, Ginny, and Presto at Connecticut Hill! Another new faculty in a connected department (the departmental structure here is confusing) expressed interest in getting out for some skiing, so I invited her along to ski with us today. We first checked out the groomed snowmobile trails, and they are totally skateable. In fact, there were other people out skating. One of them stopped when he saw Presto in all of his bundled, spacesuit glory, and we got a bunch of information about trails and things in the area from him.
We skied about to the end of the groomed trail before the loop started and then headed back on the Finger Lakes Trail, rather than complete the groomed loop. The snow was deep and no one had been on this section of the trail previously, so we were sort of floundering, especially Ginny who didn't have backcountry skis. We popped back out to the groomed trial, and then found a different small trail that a few people had already skied. We didn't really know where we were going, and eventually reached a sort of random endpoint to our trail, so we turned around and took another random trail that seemed like it might head sort of back to the road.
At this point Presto decided he was way too cold and just wanted to get back to the car, so he started speeding up and keeping just out of reach - not really running away, but also clearly not listening at all. Sam chased Presto down, and had to make a flying leap to grab Presto's jacket to keep Presto from just leaving, after which Presto apparently decided that sticking with us wasn't so terrible after all. Shortly after this we came back out to the road, and then spent like 5 minutes trying to figure out where we were while freezing, only to discover that we were like 100 feet from the car. Hopefully we haven't scared Ginny off forever...
Looking forward to coming back and skating here once we've got skate skis!
